Sports symbols and news

Most of you have already seen the photo of the kid with the Yankees cap brandishing Qaddafi's gold-plated pistol (if not, scroll down to 14:48 on the BBC 'as it happened' timeline linked above), The Latin Kings street gang has established itself in Barcelona among Dominican immigrants. They wear Los Angeles Kings and Yankees gear. And, of all things, there's a Chicago street gang called the Simon City Royals that wears (or least wore) KC Royals gear. Obviously, you can't control who buys products with your logo on them, and three-quarters of this stuff is probably pirated knock-offs rather than officially licenced products. It still makes me feel a little weird to see sports gear worn by people who have no idea what the logo means. What exactly is a Libyan guerrilla fighter doing with a Yankees cap? Have the Latin Kings ever heard of hockey? I associate Yankees caps with, like, baseball games and obnoxious fans, not with the guy who dragged Qaddafi out of his hole and grabbed his pistol. Disconcerting.
