Eric Hosmer Finishes Third in American League Rookie of the Year Voting

This afternoon the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced the winners of the Rookie of the Year Award. Our Eric Hosmer finished third in the voting. The winner was Jeremy Hellickson of the Rays. Mark Trumbo, who played a lot, finished second.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG
2011 - Eric Hosmer 128 523 66 153 27 3 19 78 34 82 11 5 .293 .334 .465

Hosmer, who made his debut at age 21, was ranked the #8 prospect in baseball prior to the season by Baseball America.

Hosmer received 4 first place votes, the third most of any candidate. The Hos also garnered 4 second place votes and 5 votes for third. Hellickson received 17 first place votes. Last week, when SB Nation bloggers voted, Hosmer finished second, behind Michael Pineda. The Mariner rookie finished a surprising 5th in the "real" balloting however.

I will never forget this day.

Next year when Hos homers off of Hellickson to send the Royals on to win the World Series  and make Sweeptheleg $400 richer, we can all give these idiot writers a big F.U.

I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

I was gonna say something very similar...

If I had a vote I would have gone

Pineda, Hosmer, Ackley, Hellickson

If I had to guess

it was because he played for approximately 5 minutes. Had he done the same for a whole season he would be a runaway ROY and All-Star. Then, if he had done it all career, he would walk into the HoF.

But it was like 40 games, right (albeit an amazing 40 games)?

by dejezeus on Nov 14, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

im more impressed by greatness even over a smaller time frame...

than i am by mediocrity played the entire season. lawrie did everything well…hitting, baserunning and fielding. all that being said, i’d still have voted for pineda without question

Agreed.

Then again, baseball awards are commonly weird choices, so Pineda is probably too smart of a choice.

Trumbo’s SLG is only slightly higher than Hos’s.

Good for Hosmer

Nice to see a Royals player get some recognition. How many crappy Rookies of the Year did the Royals have? Berroa was one of them, if I remember right.

Hosmer is going to knock twenty homers a year over the right-field fence at Kaufmann, and twenty more over the various right-field fences around America.

How come? He's a pretty good pitcher

29 starts, 189 IP

SO/BB 117-72, ERA 2.95, WHIP 1.15.

A few too many walks, but that’s a pretty solid #2 starter there. Can he repeat? Who knows.

pretty good doesnt mean the best...

i just dont see how one can justify voting him over pineda, ackley, hosmer, lawrie or even trumbo for that matter…unless of course hellickson has the skillset to maintain a 223 BABIP and 82 LOB%. By WAR, Hellickson was significantly less valuable than greg holland

.223 BABIP?

No one can keep that up. That seems extremely extreme.

by Juancho on Nov 14, 2011 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

yeah...i was trying to factor in giving him some sort of credit for a BABIP skill...

that you were talking about him possibly having…i may be off in how much of a difference that’d make

Fire Everyone

by billybeingbilly on Nov 14, 2011 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

i think its possible he stays in that range long term

has swing and miss stuff, causes a lot of pop ups, its possible.

by BeauJackson on Nov 14, 2011 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

we'll see....

the scouting reports had him as having swing and miss stuff and pretty good control…he really showed neither this year

according to FIP and xfFIP hellickson wasnt really any better than duffy this year…its amazing how a 100+ point difference in BABIP will change the perception

by billybeingbilly on Nov 14, 2011 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

oh...it is...

but i also dont think it should be the ‘who was the luckiest pitcher in baseball’ award either

Fire Everyone

by billybeingbilly on Nov 14, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

He had a very high IFFB rate.

Who knows if it was luck or a skill? Plus, the best defense in the AL. Chances are even if he’s not THAT far below the average babip, he’s not going to have a normal looking one.

Am I the only one flagging this guy?
Seriously, do we have to wait for the money shot or a "F*** THE SOXXXXXX!" before we ban him? Doubleteapot… BAN HIM!!

by SandalsNoPants on Nov 15, 2011 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

when it comes to these awards though, his 2.95 ERA still happened

not likely to happen again next season, but neither is his low strikeout rate considering how high his swinging strike rate was.

by BeauJackson on Nov 14, 2011 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

i really thought we'd gotten beyond that being the primary way to judge a pitcher...

if everything else is equal…sure, go with ERA….but things were far from equal

not yet it appears

although it was a good sign that ivan nova and his 16-4 record didnt win

by BeauJackson on Nov 14, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Nova

over Hellickson is laughable.

by powder blues on Nov 14, 2011 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

I guess

I just feel he is the better pitcher and has a better chance or repeating the success. Laughable is a bit over the top i suppose as we are all entitled to our opinions. Hellickson’s track record in the minors suggests this isn’t a one year thing.

by powder blues on Nov 14, 2011 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

but track record in the minors and probable future success really shouldnt have much of an effect...

i think hellickson won because he was a known name due to his lofty prospect ranking and due to luck…nova produced almost twice as much WAR as hellickson did…and like i said up above…i wouldnt have either of them near the top of my list…

by billybeingbilly on Nov 14, 2011 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

That's fine....

Trumbo finishing 2nd is the big problem in all of this. I wouldn’t have in in my top 5. The OBP is atrocious.

by powder blues on Nov 14, 2011 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

I understand Hellickson finishing first and would prefer to see a separate Rookie Pitcher of the Year award. Trumbo finishing over Hosmer is asinine.

by jbrocato on Nov 14, 2011 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Nova career

6.4 K/9 in the minors. Hellickson 9.8 K/9.

by powder blues on Nov 14, 2011 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

And with a .320/.450/.800 line next year....

…..Hosmer can win the 2012 AL “Kiss My Sophomore Ass” award.

/expecting Moustakas to finish 2nd
/Trumbo’s SLG in AAA will still be impressive

I think that anyone voting for Hosmer for legitimate reasons

must have had about 10 people ahead of him on their ballots.

Nick Swisher and Johnny Giavatella deserve treats in the Kaufmann parking lot.

Don't care if he wins the award.

More motivation. Go out and kick ass next year Eric.

I can now say this with a straight face, and it will be accurate: Tim Tebow is a better QB than Matt Cassel.

Pineda, Hellickson, Hosmer.

Trumbo is below average offensively, despite the home runs, and is not in the picture.
