11/16 Royals News Roundup: Oswalt, Cuthbert, Pimentel, Roth

A Roy Oswalt rumor catches us all off guard, the prospect talk continues, and an argument is made that Philip Roth has damaged American Literature. Also, remember to submit a question for Jeff's interview with Jin Wong.

1. Did anyone else here read The Instructions? The narrator mentions several times that Roth may or may not be “bad for the Jews”. I’m sure it’s rife with sarcasm/hyperbole/etc, but I’m still uncertain what he’s talking about. Thoughts from the RR literary/Judaica contingent..?

Never read The Instructions

Nor had I heard of it until now. Also never read anything by Roth, although I had heard of him.

I loved it

The Instructions. Got the feeling the author wasn’t sure how to end it – which is a bummer given that it’s a 1,030 page commitment – but I definitely enjoyed the ride.

by thejosephboys on Nov 16, 2011 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

I read American Pastoral, which I enjoyed, but wouldn’t rank in the top 100 American novels or anything… Does anyone have an opinion as to how the rest of Roth’s body of work stacks up against that one? I figured at the time that there are other authors out there I should catch up on first…

For instance, at the time, I had not read East of Eden. I’m almost at the end now. Man, this is a good book. I’m on the edge of my seat over Cal’s struggle against evil. Don’t be mean, Cal. Don’t be mean.

Petro just talked Oswalt for a minute

He started to make a case for signing him, then left it with “At some point the Royals have to spend that money. The question is is Oswalt the guy?”

He also stated basically as fact that the Royals would have to offer one more year to Oswalt than anyone else because they’re the Royals. This came up quite a bit with the Meche signing. Does anyone feel like this is true? Why is an extra year a tax on crappy teams and not just a tax on incompetent GMs?

I don’t like Petro’s simultaneous “the Royals are cheap/the Royals can’t compete” memes.

by thelaundry on Nov 16, 2011 2:06 PM EST reply actions

KC is just not that attractive of a place to sign

Until we start winning – and even then we’re not going to be as competitive as other places. Back in our winning hey day we consistently lost our free agents like Pete Rose, Jim Palmer, and Carlton Fisk, and we had to overpay to land guys like Mark Davis and Greg Gagne.

I gotta disagree

Even back in our heyday, the reason we were losing out on free agents was largely due to financial reasons. If the money were even, and if the Royals were winning, I think we’re as attractive a destination as plenty of other places, depending on what you’re looking for in a city.

Kansas City has good schools, reasonable property values, a sports media that won’t harass you, and fans who will show up in droves if the team is competitive. That’s maybe not so enticing for Jeter and A-Rod, who seem to prefer the New York nightlife, but plenty of these guys have families, and Kansas City is a great place for kids.

I really would like to expect more than

“This guy’s available! Let’s get him!” Knee jerk fan discussion. The case for and against damn near every available and potentially available SP has been made here and in detail. If you’re going to discuss acquiring a guy, at least be able to lay out the pros and cons, whether you use advanced metrics or not. It’s not too much to ask.

by thelaundry on Nov 16, 2011 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Petro was also saying...

that Buerhle was either going to sign with the White Sox or Cardinals, which was old info, as the Sox have said they probably won’t sign him and the Cards weren’t really looking to add to their rotation. And I’ve read that Buerhle was interested in the National League. The Marlins and Nats are supposedly interested, as well.

For good players, I think losing teams in unexciting cities have to pay more

And more can either mean dollars or years.

The Royals have been embarrassingly bad for a long time. The fact that there are some good young players and a good minor league system probably isn’t much of a draw. I don’t think MLB players think the Royals are right on the verge of contention. Like most, I think they’ll believe it when they see it.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

I've gone on record here as thinking Redskins is the worst name in sports,

but beyond that, I think the clear second for worst name is Predators. I mean, really, what were they thinking? The team was even named relatively recently so they really should have seen it coming.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the war room!

by KeepItCopacetic on Nov 16, 2011 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

They should be named the Washington Lobbyists

And there shouldn’t even be a hockey team in Nashville, for Chrissakes. Nobody in Tennessee even knows how to ice-skate. Worst sports name ever: the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Named for a Disney kids’ movie. Toronto Raptors isn’t any good, either, since it sounds like a bunch of kidnapper-rapists.

I assume you saw that they’re starting an indy league baseball team in London, Ontario, called the London Rippers, whose logo looks an awful lot like our image of the notorious Jack. Scandal! Good PR move, they got media attention all over North America, and now I guess they’re going to change the name and logo again “under pressure” and will milk the name change for more PR.

by KeepItCopacetic on Nov 17, 2011 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Seems that Jack "rips the cover off the ball"

Or so says the far-fetched marketing explanation. The mascot is carrying a bat and ball, not a knife, so that’s a point in their favor.

The fascination with Jack the Ripper is hard to understand; he was a serial killer who murdered five prostitutes 120 years ago. Those guys are a dime a dozen. There’s one operating in KC leaving bodies in the Missouri River.

Part of it was the media; Jack the Ripper was one of the first big cases that the new popular press exploited to the hilt. Earlier murderers had been publicized by penny broadsides, not nearly as good as the production of professional reporters. Part of it was that they never caught him, but there are many more interesting mysteries today than the identity of some sicko who disemboweled a few hookers in 1888.

OT: INTEREST ON SPANISH GOVT BONDS HITS 7.1%

So go out and buy as many as you can afford. It’s not like OH MY GOD THE EURO IS GONNA CRASH it’s risky or anything. Come on! You going to sit back and hold 1.5% JESUS CHRIST THE EU IS GONNA BREAK UP boring old Treasury bonds? Be a daring, aggressive investor!

The general election is Nov. 20. Three days. Zapatero isn’t even running and the Socialist candidate, Rubalcaba, is going to get wiped out by the conservative People’s Party. They’ll have a huge absolute majority, maybe as much as 190 seats (out of 350). The Catalanist moderates Convergence and Union will also do pretty well, 16 seats or so. The Communists are going to get about eight seats, and the Basque crazies are going to get about four.

This will make three Southern European leaders down in three weeks, first Papandreou, then Berlusconi, now Zapatero. Spain’s only hope is that 1) the government isn’t really heavily indebted, at about 60% of GDP, especially not compared to some of the other basket cases around here, 2) about 65% of Spanish debt is in Spanish hands; the other countries that crashed had the great majority of their debt in foreign hands, and the foreigners had no interest in propping up the country, and 3) the two big banks, Santander and BBVA, are both solid.

The idea, I think, is that those Spanish institutions and persons

who own Spanish debt are not going to bet against their own country’s economy, because they have an interest in maintaining stability. This makes a default less likely, right?

We’re hoping that the new conservative government will help stabilize things, simply because the markets will be certain who’s running the country. They have an austerity plan, of course, and we’re hoping the markets are going to like that.

One of the problems is that I don’t think the real estate bust has finished busting. It looks to me like sellers aren’t willing to take the loss on property they bought high on, or built on speculation. Prices are falling, but I saw one story that said real estate is still about 30% overpriced in Spain, relative to the rest of Europe.

"All the boys think she's a guy
She's got crazy Frenchy eyes."

by Juancho on Nov 18, 2011 4:39 AM EST up reply actions

An austerity plan seems like a good way to encourage the real estate market to decline.

There’s really no way for a country to avoid default if it doesn’t issue in its own currency and the markets turn against it. That’s why we have the IMF, but Spain is too big for the IMF to rescue.

If Germany and France won’t move toward fiscal union, this monetary union seems doomed to an ugly failure.
