"I plan on really getting after it this offseason, coming back physically ready to be what we need: an extra No. 2, No. 3. That's my goal, you've got to set your goals high. I'm going to do everything in my power to come back physically ready, strong enough to stay consistent in my delivery."

More Duffy Quotes
“I really want to go into the seventh, eighth and ninth [innings] a lot next year. That’s what a good starter does. My goal is to average a lot less pitches per start, per inning. I think I can do that if I just practice staying in line. Just keep my team in every game; when they fight for me, I fight right back. That’s pretty much the goal every time I go out.”
“I got over the whole initial shock of being in the big leagues and now I’m set with that, knowing what you need to do off the field and what you need to do to prepare, to be on the field. Throwing the right pitches in the right counts and executing as much as you can is what I’ve got to do now. I think right now it will be a little less of a shock value.”
“It’s definitely nice to just out-stuff people, but once I learn how to place a ball where I want to, it’s going to be scary.”
I like the last quote you have here.
His command seemed way off at times, lengthening at-bats and raising his pitch counts when he had the initial advantage.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
Love the confidence.
Now if I hear anything next year about how Duffy needs to “trust his stuff”, then my head will explode.
I don't know why coming back as a #2, #3 constitutes setting your goals high
Maybe a #2 (in the traditional sense which is probably top 15% of starters) is a high goal, but being a #3 basically means above average. That seems like the minimum goal he should set for himself.
Considering his 2011 ML production was bad even for a #5
He wants to improve considerably next year, no matter how you define a #2 or #3 SP. If his goals are to improve his control, lower his pitch counts and go deeper into games, he’s at least starting on the right track.
I agree with Scott that the Royals appear to be committed to Duffy in the 2012 rotation. They made a change in pitching coach and profess an emphasis on reducing walks. With the 4 currently in the rotation, that will be a difficult task.
Disagree.
- or #3 is a high standard while still being realistic. The scouting reports on him have said somewhere around 2 or 3 to be his ceiling. I already anticipate the argument of: he should not limit himself to scouting reports on him. Just to be clear, I don’t think that is the case. I think he has the intention of becoming the best pitcher possible and is basing his goals on his 2011 performance. If he ended up with a 3.50 ERA in 2011, then I expect his goal would be to pitch like a #1. It’s all relative.
Being a little above average might be an okay goal given that he was well below average last year
I just think it’s weird to call it setting your goals high. It’s like saying, “My goal is driving a Honda Accord. You gotta shoot for the stars!.” The Accord is a good car, and it’s certainly an improvement over a ‘96 Neon. It’s just weird that it’d be someone’s stretch goal.
When someone says that they’ve set their goal high, you kind of expect that the goal is a little more optimistic than reality will allow, and that they’ll only get there if things go really well. Saying you’ve set your goals high is something of an admission that you don’t think you’ll do better than that, and you’d be pleased to even get that far.
So to me, this is sort of like Duffy saying he doesn’t think he can be good enough to be a #1 or even a solid #2 starter. And that may be the case. But I’d want Duffy to think he can be a HOFer and the best in the game, or at least the type of pitcher that could go head-to-head with another team’s ace in a playoff series.
Still disagree.
I still think it’s better to have reasonable goals, and he is doing that.

I agree completely.
To me, champions have that mindset.

To me
He is saying what he’s been told by a coaching staff. That’s not the talk of a player thinking for himself. I’m going to assume that Eiland is telling him this as the new staff will probably be making an impression early. As a coach, I would tell a kid that his goal is to go longer in games, throw more strikes, get ahead of more hitters, and that he doesn’t have to be the ace of our staff or “the guy”, he just has to put his team in position to consistently win games and when they fight for him, he needs to fight back.
Duffy’s got goals, I’m sure he’s not publicly stating the personal goals. He’ll state the coach speak goals.
Not directed at you specifically, RRJ
but where should his goal/wish/dreaming stop? “I’m going to be the Cy Young next season!” “I’m going to be the best Cy Young ever next season!” “I’m going to be the best CY Young ever AND be a good enough hitter to lead the league in home runs!”
It’s just a grey area, that’s all – let him set his goals wherever he wants. If he develops some better control, he’ll be in great shape.

This is his goal for next season, not his career
If your goal was to have a Honda Accord tomorrow, it would be pretty ambitious. If it was to have a Honda Accord some time in the next ten years, it would be much less ambitious. Time frame matters.
Duffy can’t earn his way into the Hall of Fame next year, and being the best in the game is a ludicrous target considering his first year (Hallady got there but it took years). Being a true #2 starter in his second season is a pretty ambitious goal in my book.
no offense to Duffy, but this is true

Thank god...
I read the short preview on the side of the page and I thought this was a Jason Kendall quote. Whew! Got really worried there for a second…
MAJOR LEAGUE (The Royals)
Rachel Phelps (Royals Management): I think he'll fit right in with our team concept.
Charlie Donovan (Royals Fans): That reminds me, I was going to ask you. What exactly *is* our team concept?
That or....

As equally important as adding SPs this offseason
is the improvement of Hochevar, Duffy and Paulino. A solid season from Duffy will go a long ways to help us compete with Detroit next season.
