OT POLL: Are you going to see the Muppet movie?
Well, are you punk?
I for one love everything Muppets (save for that Saturday morning Muppet Babies TV show from the 80s, even though I never missed an episode at the time), and am a huge fan of post-Henson characters, such as Peppy le Prawn and that pot-smoking Rastafarian catfish. I remember Fraggle Rock fondly, especially the episode where some Fraggle found a secret mysterious bottle of potion that turned out to be "Boring Potion", and all of the Fraggles except for one got addicted to it. Whenever the non-addicted Fraggle would come up to one of the other Fraggles and say, "Hey! Let's go outside and play catch!" or "Hey! Let's go to the movie theater and see a movie!" the other Fraggle would look up at him from their couch with deeply stoned eyes and say, "Nah....that sounds boring." There's a metaphor in there somewhere, but I've yet to unearth it.
EDIT: Do not rec this.

I fucking love the Muppets... everything Muppets.
But I hate going to the theater, so I’ll probably just wait.

The Original Muppet Movie was funnier than hell
This one cannot possibly live up, so yeah, no.
talk to me, Johnny...
what about Take Manhattan? Great Caper? From Space?
Those are all fantastic. Granted, I haven’t seen Christmas Carol, but everybody says it’s great.
Treasure Island is ’poseta suck I guess. Never seen that one either.
That is all.

Treasure Island and Christmas Carol were both good i thought
but i’m a sucker when it comes to Muppets, pretty much enjoy them all. On that note, i will not be seeing it in theaters but probably when it comes out on DVD
Do these effectively hide my thunder?
one dude conveyed to me negative things about Treasure Island…..but he was/is a very….different…..fellow.

I loved them all and there's no way I'll miss it.
Having said that, I prefer the Caper to the rest of them.

Yes! My friends and I were just talking about this and when we're gonna go.
Did you know one of the guys from Flight of the Conchords wrote some of the songs for it? Did you know Chris Cooper is in it (Royals fan!)?
It’s gonna be AWESOME!!!!! So excited!
Oh, but we're not going this weekend. I hate the fucking mall on Thanksgiving weekend
and I worked retail for over 10 years, so I’ve earned the right to say that.
I always sleep in on Black Friday.
There’s actually a great TV deal I want this year, but Target will be open at midnight fortunately.

Supposedly
Jason Segal wrote a puppet scene in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” to make himself more attractive as a possible lead for a future Muppets movie.

He wrote that entire puppet musical thing for the movie himself from what I've heard.

Not on your list, but I'm planning to see it Wednesday.
Why would anyone go on Thanksgiving when you could see it the day before?
by OnixConcepcion on Nov 20, 2011 10:43 PM EST reply actions
wow, so....a midnight showing then?
or it opens the day before?
If it opens the day before, I’m going to see it alone on some Acetaminophen-less Vicodens…via cold-water-extraction……because, to me, that will be afforded, and I can’t smoke the herb for employment reasons. This is all something I should probably keep to myself, but I’ll leave it for the purposes of defining further the rich pageant of Crooow.

It's listed online as going wide on Wednesday
movies don’t come out on Thursdays, usually… if it’s only at midnight, I may still do it.

Also, what's a muppet?
Well, it’s not quite a mop, and it’s not quite a puppet, but man… So to answer your question, I don’t know.

I disappointed that I couldn't vote, "Maybe I dunno, but this poll is awesome"
I’m not gonna be the impetus to go see it, but would gladly accompany someone who wants to watch it.

If I were going to be in town on Wednesday night, I would totally be down for joining RR people for this.
But, alas, I will not be.

Any comments on whether it is appropriate for very young children are appreciated
I love the adult jokes the kids miss, I am mainly concerned about violence. We had to stop watching Aladdin becuz it is actually quite violent. Man parenting changes a person.

Screenit.com and Kids-in-mind.com are good resources
Maybe I’m turning into a prude, but we didn’t watch Cars 2 because I didn’t want my 3 year old watching gunfights and bomb explosions.

As a kid, I remember even Garfield, which is about as vanilla as it gets, doing catnip jokes.

I will see it. Eventually.
Muppets from Space and A Muppet Christmas Carol are fantastic films. Enjoyable for adults and children, but not in the way that they try to make kids movies nowadays, whereas Muppet films just use universal humor, most children’s movies throw in references to adult subject matter that goes over the heads of children (i.e. the Puss in Boots catnip/glaucoma comment above). There’s so much innuendo and doublespeak to try and give kid’s movies universal appeal that it tends to do the opposite, for me anyway.
I may just be getting old, but it seems like kid’s movies are all prepubescent forms of dick and fart jokes now.
There are some exceptions. WALL-E and Up come to mind. Toy Story 3 was really good as well. But man. Cars 2? I couldn’t stand the first one.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
Exactly...
this could be called the Sesame Street factor…I forget what Malcolm Gladwell book it is, Tipping Point maybe, that has a long discussion (maybe 10-15 pages) on how Sesame Street and Blues Clues had oodles and oodles of research in them before airing
on Sesame Street they figured out that just puppets wouldn’t work and just humans wouldn’t work, but when the combination of puppets with humans (“kid’s world” melded with “real world learning”) is when the kids payed the most attention
Sesame Street was well aware of the jokes that flew over the kids’ heads, and this would disengage the children’s interest from the learning, so as you will notice with Sesame Street they make double edged jokes that both the kid and adult understand, like “he’s a potty animal”
JKWard has touched on something here with the “prepubescent forms of dick and fart jokes”…I have noticed it too…when a film is lacking in originality and teaching ability, it goes straight for the dumbed down culture that loves those films…I would say even Bee Movie gets a little adult oriented, but stays within the realm…and Toy Story 3 is one of the greatest movies ever made, was glad to see it get an Oscar Best Picture nod
I am the one who knocks.
If I'm watching kids' movies, I really do enjoy humor that is aimed at adults, but not "adult" in nature.
One example is in Toy Story 2, when one of the toys questioned the mileage on the vehicle they were driving.

Right. There is "adult" humor in movies that isn't adult humor. And it works really well at times.
I guess when I say adult humor, it’s more casual innuendo, entendre, and euphemism about subject matter that most parents would never discuss with or around their children that gets plugged in to animated films nowadays to give them that same appeal that you are talking about.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
Agree with all these posts
I think the original Shrek movie was fine, but it was a monster as it encouraged every kids movie to jam as many "adult references’ as they could into the movie without considering that the movie was supposed to be aimed at kids.
The best kids movies are the ones that can touch upon themes adults can still relate to, without pandering to the adults. Wall-E is a great example of this – I was totally sucked in. You take away the fact that its a cartoon and its still a pretty darn good adult movie about friendship/love and what it means to be “human.”

Just saw it with my 10 year old
I’d give it a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10, which means it’s exactly league average for kid movies. You get off on some of the nostalgia, but overall, I thought it was weak and disorganized. Too much human, not enough Muppets. I don’t mind musicals (Meet Me in St Louis is one of my all-time faves. No, I don’t have a vagina.) but the music numbers in this show don’t seem to fit very well. Jack Black, Zack Galifinaikas, Sarah Silverman, and others make cameos, but are largely wasted. It just doesn’t work that well…has the feel of too many writers and re-writes, etc….Is it the worst kid movie I’ve ever seen? Hell no, that would be fucking DOOGAL. Is it in the same category as Toy Story, Howl’s Moving Castle, Up, or even Tangled? Not even close. I like Segel, but he’s no Dick Van Dyke.

Saw it, Liked it a lot
Can’t argue with Nighthawk’s complaints. It definitely cut some corners and had some noticeable holes. In other words, it tried to do something very awesome, but fell short, and ended up only being a good movie.
my expectations were probably too high
it has its moments
