Friday OT Thread

I'm stuck at work today.  There's pretty much no one here, and no expectation of getting anything done.  As great as that sounds, it's actually colossaly boring.  Can collosal really be made into an adjverb?

Star-divide

1.  Is anyone else stuck at work?

2.  Who had some crazy black friday action/story?  Any pepper spray?

3.  Give me your best creative Thanksgiving leftovers meal.  Simply reheating doesn't count - you have to create something new out of the leftovers.

4.  I just got my first smartphone - give me some android apps/games (preferably free) that I need to check out.

5.  Do the Royals make another major move (major for the Royals that is...major would basically be defined as inolving a member of the 25 man roster...) this offseason?

Why yes I am – how did you know?

2. Who had some crazy black friday action/story? Any pepper spray?
I’ve never had a true black friday experience. I bought a $200 smart phone for $00.01 online a couple days ago, but online doesn’t count. The only time I’ve purposefully been at a store on the day after Thanksgiving was at the Mall of America….but that was a planned vacation. And the MoA was not particularly busy.

3. Give me your best creative Thanksgiving leftovers meal. Simply reheating doesn’t count – you have to create something new out of the leftovers.
Shepards pie is a good one. Chop up some leftover turkey, mix with some vegetables/stuffing and a little gravy. Spread mashed potatoes over the top like meringue, and bake until everything is heated through and the potatoes get kind of crispy.

Making soup stock out of the carcass is always a good idea, though not exactly a specific recipe.

4. I just got my first smartphone – give me some android apps/games (preferably free) that I need to check out.
I’m a big fan of the gmail app!

5. Do the Royals make another major move (major for the Royals that is…major would basically be defined as inolving a member of the 25 man roster…) this offseason?
I’ll say we acquire an iffy starting pitcher (minor league deal), a veteran reliever to a major league deal (it will be one of those ‘not horrible but serves no real purpose head scratchers’), and a maddening major league deal for a position player – some old, gritty white guy that will take playing time away from some one more interesting.

Let's just trust the process.

1. I don’t know that I’m “stuck”. I don’t absolutely HAVE to be here (one of the benefits of being a partial small business owner). However, the wheels of justice must keep rolling for my clients…even if that means rolling over Black Friday and leaving it in the dust.

2. Given that I think getting up early (or even sleeping in) and venturing out to join the consumer throngs on a day like this is the height of lunacy, I don’t have any personal anecdotes related to this day. No pepper spray in my office…so far.

3. Why mess with perfection? Just plop another serving of everything I ate yesterday onto a plate and heat it up for me. I guess I’m a simple man.

4. I’ve got an iPhone, so I got nothing for you on Android apps. Sporcle is a good/fun time-waster. So I’d download that if it’s available on Android.

5. Trusttheprocess’ answer to this was basically the Official Dayton Moore Offseason Playbook. Hard to argue with tradition, but I still think Dayton wants to pull off a trade for a top-level (i.e. #1-3) starter. I think he’d be content with having Monty and Duffy both open the season in AAA, and I think even Dayton knows that Crow isn’t a realistic rotation option. If one or more of them pitch lights out, then he’ll probably look at trading Sanchez mid-season.

by Sweep_the_Leg on Nov 25, 2011 2:08 PM EST reply actions

If he were able to get somebody like Jurrjens (not that I'd want him to get someone like Jurrjens), Gonzalez, Garza, etc.

then yes. I think he’d open the season with something like Hochevar, Jurrjens, Sanchez, Paulino, and Chen, with Duffy and Monty at Omaha and Crow in the pen (where he probably belongs). Then if there were an injury or bad performance to start the season, I think Duffy would be the first callup. I think it all depends on how many strikes Duffy is throwing in ST. If he’s still walking (seemingly) every other batter, then I think Dayton thinks it’s probably best to have him sort out the control issues in Omaha.

Star-divide

1. Is anyone else stuck at work?

No, but I’m about to go stick myself at work. I need to finish a writing project—-MSS due March 15.

2. Who had some crazy black friday action/story? Any pepper spray?

Nothing. “Black Friday” is a ridiculous made-up American concept.

3. Give me your best creative Thanksgiving leftovers meal. Simply reheating doesn’t count – you have to create something new out of the leftovers.

Nothing to offer.

4. I just got my first smartphone – give me some android apps/games (preferably free) that I need to check out.

My family only has one cell phone—-a regular old flip phone (which does happen to have a camera—-woo hoo!).

5. Do the Royals make another major move (major for the Royals that is…major would basically be defined as inolving a member of the 25 man roster…) this offseason?

I’d love to see them pick up—-by trade preferably—-two more quality starting pitchers. I’d love our starting 5 to be 7 deep with above average quality. If GMDM is going to bring anything here from the Braves, it’s the idea that you can never have too much starting pitching.

At this point I might even be an advocate of moving Soria to the rotation (if they’re not going to move Crow there). We have 3 high-quality bullpen pitchers. Why not move one up and call up another to spend a year learning in the bullpen as a 7th or 8th inning set up guy? – TL

4. Can’t help you there.

1. I’m working. I’ve got a project that’s major overdue, and I’ll probably also work the weekend to get it closer to done.
2. No pepper spray, no unusual stories to share. But we generally do Black Friday sales every year, together when I can take Friday off, my wife alone if I can’t, like this year.
3. No ideas, sorry. Never cooked a Thanksgiving meal for ourselves, always been guests, or ate ordinary food.
4. Can’t help you there either, I just use a normal old cell phone. I don’t even text.
5. I think there will be another pitcher added to the 25-man roster before Opening Day.

4. I’ve got an iPhone, but i assume theres some crossover. Weather Channel, Yelp, Angry Birds, and Sportaneous (if you like playing pickup sports).

1. Yes. I work for the Missouri Mavs and we’ve got a game tonight. A couple hundred tickets still available tonight if ya’ll want to take in a hockey game.

2. No

3. My family has a Thanksgiving leftovers meal on Friday. But we make sandwiches instead on hawaiian king rolls. I started putting turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie and stuffing on the sandwich with a slice of provolone. Call it the “heartstopper” and it’s the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten.

4. Got my HTC Evo and have been absolutely addicted to Cut the Rope. 99 cents and way better than angry birds.

5. I think the Royals are done actively pursuing trade partners. Hopefully they would have to be overwhelmed. I’m talking like Anibal Sanchez and a prospect for Alex Gordon.

2. Screw “black Friday” and all the sells that make the day retarded. When I worked at Wal-Mart I refused to work this day.

3. Basically just take some leftovers and make a grilled breakfast burrito out of it. Best one was pork chops, potatoes, and cheesy broccoli with salsa. We do this a lot with leftovers.

4. Words with friends. You will become an addict. (anyone wants to play, hit me up at PhattStairs)

Last night was the first time in my life I’ve ever actually tried to go out because the Emerson TV deal at Wal-Mart was too much to pass up. I didn’t get it, but at least due to the ticketing system I knew right away and could leave. I’m just not a fan of the shopping hordes; I like to put off my Christmas shopping as long as I can. I think my personal record is December 23.

I decided to engage someone on Twitter who said that 2B should be an open competition between Colon and Giavotella in ST for the Opening Day roster.

Oh, no.

This was a protracted argument (I use this word in the academic sense). He really meant open it up and have Giavotella and Colon compete for the job on opening day. His rationale was that Colon was considered the most ML-ready of his draft class, and then he busted out the “Crow made the jump” argument.

At this point, I would consider Navarro being able to do this less crazy than Colon. I haven’t seen many positive things said about Colon since the 2011 season began.

Absolutely.

I might err on the side of caution with a 5% chance, but that is still miniscule. The only way I see that playing out is if Giavotella is injured, and the front office doesn’t pursue a 2B via trade/waivers in ST or do the inevitable and sign Kelly Johnson in the coming month or two.

I also was stuck at work today. Sadly, we do not have Royals Review access on our computers. It was dead dead dead.

This is the first year in about 11 years that I have not been working retail at the holidays. Pretty weird. However at the bookstore Black Friday was never a big deal, especially not in the morning because the “serious” (i.e. insane) shoppers were out in the morning and we had nothing big enough to tempt them and everyone was sleeping in or avoiding anything shop-like until the afternoon. I remember one year this group of women came into the store to get some caffeine from our cafe. They had matching bright pink t-shirts with their shopping team’s name on them and they had maps and were calling their other team members. I was pretty happy when they left. Although I can appreciate if you’re going to engage in that insanity having a plan, but the t-shirts and the Bridezilla-like vibes coming off them made me just want to punch them in the face.

In our line of retail, the Saturday before Christmas and December 23rd (the last full shopping day) were the completely insane days. Honestly – I’m going to miss it. I kind of loved working when it was busy and we were pretty much just doing crowd control and inventory control and I had an excuse to not get sucked into a long conversation with crazy, lonely people (a constant hazard at the bookstore). It’s my favorite time of the year.

by Gross(est) on Nov 25, 2011 8:06 PM EST reply actions

Just remembered another Black Friday - the easiest Black Friday morning ever

because the store down the street had some great tv sale going on in the morning and to get it, the customers had to pick up the tv at the loading dock, so there was a line of cars going from the back of the building completely encircling every store front and back and out onto the street and down the block, so no other customers could get into the parking lot and any staff who were scheduled to arrive between 7-8am had to park like two blocks away and walk in. So it was pretty dead that morning until their tv sale ended, which gave us time to finish setting up our Christmas displays and, you know, wake up.

I will answer the 5th question, and the 5th question only.

The Royals will probably trade for Gio Gonzalez or Jair Jurrjens, Jurrjens being the most likely target. The Royals will also put a $40 Million bid in for Yu Darvish, and get him with a 4 year, $60 Million contract. The Royals will put Darvish and Jurrjens in the rotation, leave Duffy in AAA for depth, and put Chen in the bullpen as a long reliever.

The Rotation will look like:

1-Yu Darvish
2-Jair Jurrjens
3-Luke Hochevar
4-Jonathan Sanchez
5-Felipe Paulino

Suddenly, the Royals are a good team, and everyone is happy.

1) I did a couple of classes on Friday.
2) No Black Friday in Spain; the post-Epiphany (January 6) sales are similar, but I’ve never been to one.
3) No Thanksgiving in Spain, and I’m a vegetarian anyway.
4) Don’t have one.
5) I think there’ll be a move for another starting pitcher, but the Royals’ field lineup is basically set and so is the bullpen.

One of my biggest holiday-related pet peeves is when people think the 12 days of Christmas are the 12 days leading up to Christmas when they are in fact the 12 days from Christmas to the Epiphany when the wise men arrived.

So hearing it acknowledged, even in a crash consumerism way, kind of makes me happy.

Santa bringing stuff for Christmas

is rather new in Spain and due entirely to the influence of American popular culture. Traditionally it’s the “Three Kings,” as they call them. Bad kids get “caca i carbó” in Catalonia—that is, shit and coal. Now they make candy that looks like pieces of shit and coal and all the kids get some as a joke. Catalan culture is rather earthy.

but have no head for business, so I’ll need some help. What we need to do is get some caganer manufacturer to do a baseball player figure and then have them painted in all the teams’ colors. Everyone would want several, one of their own team and several of their team’s rivals.
