Former Royals News: Jamie Quirk to be Chicago Cubs Bench Coach
Quirk, who spent 11 seasons with KC as a part-time catcher, will be Dale Sveum's bench coach.
I always liked Quirk. He's one of only two players in MLB history with the Quirk-y surname.
Quirk's best season with KC was probably 1988. Here's his stat line for that year:
84 games, 196 ABs, 22 Rs, 47 hits, 80 TB, 7 2Bs, 1 triple, 8 HRs, 25 RBIs, 28 BBs, 2 IBBs (even Quirk could get the occasional intentional), 41 SOs, 1 SB, 5 CS, .240 BA, .333 OBP, .408 SLG, .741 OPS.
I think Quirk may have earned three WS rings---one with KC and two others Oakland. Amazing. - TL

1987 was..
…also a pretty good year for Quirk. As well as the WS years. When you’re a part-time player, figuring out one’s top year is clearly a subjective endeavor. I wonder what he’d say was his best year?

He also was once traded to the Indians I believe
Hit a game winning HR in his only at bat, and was released.

Relatively speaking, then, he might be...
…the greatest player in Cleveland Indians history. Awesome.

His HR in his only PA as an Indian
was in Sept of 1984 vs Minnesota, knocking the Twinkies out of the division race, and clinching the division title for KC. Undoubtedly the biggest contribution he ever made to the Royals.

So he's the greatest player...
…in Indian history and a solid, respectable back-up in Royals history.

79th Greatest Royal
according to Retro’s (somewhat outdated) count.

That's awesome.
I missed that or it would have been a part of my headline for this post.

I couldn't get...
…Quinn’s stats to come up at the MLB page. …I couldn’t believe you, so I had to check.

The A's only won one World Series during his career
So, two WS rings.

It FELT...
…like the As won 4-5 steroid-laced WS in the late 80s and early 90s.

Nope, just 1 WS
2 AL championships, and 1 division title in addition. They were certainly a dominant team, but…WS ring only in 1989.

My mom once claimed she went on a date with Jamie Quirk
Before she married my dad. Which would have had to have been during his ‘75-’76 stint with the Royals. (Didn’t realize he played for 18 seasons).
Nothing further, just a random tidbit from my family history. Jamie Quirk is obscure enough that I think I might believe her.
The Royals had some
Uhhhh…how do I say this…ummm, pretty wild characters back then…Mr.Quirk included. But it being your mom and all, I’m sure he had her in by midnight.

Doubtful
She spent a year during or immediately after high school in California in a “Going to California” phase. I think a handful of kids piled into a VW Bug and literally spent a year in California. I don’t pretend to be able to relate to those times. She said she lived in Alameda and was friends with George Blanda’s daughter and hung out at his house all the time.
I believe you, man, because...
…my stepmother had a similar went-to-California phase during 1968-69. We don’t talk about it, and she doesn’t volunteer any stories. …It’ll all come out in a posthumous hand-written autobiography.

I've literally now told you guys everything about that time period
that I know that doesn’t involve her once she met my dad. And I don’t press for details.
