2011 SB Nation Rookie of the Year Award Winners
All week we'll be announcing the results of our SB Nation Baseball Award Winners. We followed the same format as the "real" BBWAA system, with each team blog getting two ballots. Following that system, I only voted on AL awards.
The Rookie of the Year voting probably has the most interest for you, as our Eric Hosmer emerged as a serious candidate. Alas, he came up short. Here are the American League results:
| Num | Name | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Michael Pineda | 9 | 4 | 3 | 60 |
| 2 | Eric Hosmer | 5 | 4 | 3 | 40 |
| 3 | Jeremy Hellickson | 4 | 5 | 4 | 39 |
| 4 | Dustin Ackley | 1 | 5 | 3 | 23 |
| 5 | Ivan Nova | 5 | 5 | 20 | |
| 6 | Alexi Ogando | 2 | 1 | 13 | |
| 7 | Mark Trumbo | 1 | 3 | 8 | |
| 8 | Desmond Jennings | 1 | 2 | 7 | |
| 9 | Brett Lawrie | 1 | 1 | 6 |
I voted 1) Pineda, 2) Ackley, 3) Hosmer. I think I'd rather have Hosmer over the two Mariners I voted above him, but in 2011, I think Hosmer was the third best. Ackley-Hosmer 2/3 is definitely debatable, basically the difference is in the UZR numbers and in positional value. I take both of those seriously. However, Ackley played just 90 games. If I had to vote again, I'd probably switch them.
If you are curious, here are the NL results:
| Num | Name | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Craig Kimbrel | 22 | 4 | 2 | 124 |
| 2 | Danny Espinosa | 4 | 6 | 8 | 46 |
| 3 | Freddie Freeman | 8 | 3 | 27 | |
| 4 | Vance Worley | 1 | 5 | 3 | 23 |
| 5 | Wilson Ramos | 1 | 2 | 5 | 16 |
| 6 | Brandon Beachy | 1 | 4 | 7 | |
| 7 | Corey Luebke | 1 | 3 | ||
| 8 | Lucas Duda | 1 | 3 | ||
| 9 | Mark Melancon | 1 | 1 | ||
| 10 | Allen Craig | 1 | 1 | ||
| 11 | Kenley Jansen | 1 | 1 |
Kenley Jansen is a baseball player and not a 16 year old high school girl in California? Odd.

Geez, Will, you're supposed to be a homer
and vote for our guy no matter what you really think.
"All the boys think she's a guy
She's got crazy Frenchy eyes."
And you will be struck down upon with great vengeance and furious anger
I can't forget ... but I can't remember what.
Seriously though ...
Do we really want him winning ROY, considering how well it has worked out for us in the past?

Royals just traded Melky
for Jonathan Sanchez

Beat me to it
Someone needs to create a post on this so I know how to feel about it. Sanchez? I thought he retired.
Jonathan Sanchez
Not Freddy

From MLB Trade Rumors
The Royals acquired lefty Jonathan Sanchez and minor leaguer Ryan Verdugo from the Giants for Melky Cabrera, announced the team.
Sanchez, 28, may have been a non-tender candidate for the Giants after a disappointing 2011 season that saw him walk 5.9 per nine innings and miss significant time with biceps tendinitis and a sprained ankle. The southpaw is tough to hit and has big-time strikeout numbers, but control has always been a problem. He projects to earn $5.2MM in 2012, after which he’ll be eligible for free agency. That he was traded for one year of Cabrera shows how much his trade value slipped during the ‘11 season. Sanchez was set to battle Barry Zito for the Giants’ fifth starter job next year.
Cabrera had the opposite experience in 2011, experiencing a resurgence after being non-tendered and signing a $1.25MM free agent deal. The 27-year-old hit .305/.339/.470 with 18 home runs in 706 plate appearances for the Royals, playing mostly center field. UZR suggests he is a below-average defender there, though there seems a good chance the Giants continue to use him in center. If so, Andres Torres could become expendable. Cabrera is projected to earn $4.4MM in 2012, after which he’ll be eligible for free agency.
Verdugo, a 24-year-old Double-A southpaw, went to Kansas City along with Sanchez in the deal. Baseball America ranked him 25th among Giants prospects prior to the season, describing him as a deceptive lefty who misses bats but has minus command. Verdugo was a starter in college and returned to that role last year.
Great ...
Another pitcher with control problems … I thought we were trying to reduce walks?
I can't forget ... but I can't remember what.
Sanchez is frustrating to watch
Walks a ton and doesn’t go deep in games. But he does strike people out.
Does this mean Cain takes over center?

Have you heard of Hellickson?
Not even top 3? wtf?
Am I the only one flagging this guy?
Seriously, do we have to wait for the money shot or a "F*** THE SOXXXXXX!" before we ban him? Doubleteapot… BAN HIM!!

Hellickson...that sounds familiar.
Oh yeah, he was that pitcher for Tampa Bay that had no business being considered for AL ROY.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
