After verifying with your assistant that Alex has two full years of team control left, and will be 28 in February, you tell the GM you will get back with him in the morning.
Morning comes. Before you have even grabbed a cup of coffee, your cell phone rings. It's Him. What are you going to tell Him?
A) Sorry, no can do. Aforementioned player is off limits. We have every intention of signing him to an extension before Spring Training.
B) We need starting pitching bad. Here's who YOU have, that we WANT:
C) We need pitching, but have some other needs also. This is the package that we will HAVE TO have:

If we ever trade Gordo (NOO)
I would want GMDM to get at least a #1 Starting pitcher and some sort of other prospect
Good game homie
What type of prospect? Pitcher? Position player? If so, what position? Big League-ready only?

Hmmm Maybe an outfielder with talent
That could come in and compete for LF after Alex is gone
Good game homie

Just to throw out an example of what I would want...
Let’s assume its the marlins, I know its ridiculous, but lets just assume.
1. Anibal Sanchez. He’s still young, improving and his HR rate should be helped a bit by the K
2. Noah Perio a 2B at high A. He’s got talent, its just a ways off.
I think thats a good package, provided we can resign Sanchez.
"We don’t have guys with a long history of being effective in the seventh and eighth innings."
~Trey Hillman, master of understatements.
Great example
And that is the type of move I could live with.

So if that trade were to happen,
Who would play LF and who would leadoff?

Bloomquist... And Bloomquist.

There is a chance the Marlins don't resign him.
So, if the Royals wanted, they could have Sanchez AND Gordon by waiting a year. So…I don’t like it.
If you take the above out of context, it sounds quite sexual.

Would it be more or less sexual if he had Frenchy with him?
You can only be young once, but you can be immature forever.

People are now staring at me. I burst out with ridiculous laughter from this.

Hi AA,
“Sure, nobody’s off-limits. I really like Lawrie, Ricky Romero, and Drabek. Take Getz while you’re at it.”
What would I say?
“THE FUCK YOU DOING WAKING ME UP SO EARLY IN THE MORNING, ASSHOLE???”

I love Gordon and I think he's very valuable to the Royals
But I would trade any player, including the Royals best players, if it is a trade which would improve the team. The complicating factor is a potential Gordon extension. Trading Gordon now would mean trading away the possibility of having him for more than two years. If an extension is still a possibility (and I have a feeling that one is currently being negotiated), this probably isn’t the best time to pull a Gordon trade.

Scott, is you're choice A)?

I guess so
I could still be bowled over by a tremendous offer. I’d probably say that we’re in the process of working on a contract extension, but if you want to make an offer, go ahead. I’ll listen. I’d make them make the first offer in this case.

At least three players is what I would be looking for in return:
1) Top of the rotation starter
2) ML-ready above-replacement outfielder
3) High-ceiling prospect
There is some flexibility on points 2 and 3, but none at all on point 1. Using Philadelphia as an example:
1) Cole Hamels, in his last year of team control
2) John Mayberry Jr. (turns 28 this December. I want to say he has four years of team control left. Might be five.) In 296 PAs, he hit .273/.341/.513, .369 wOBA, 133 wRC+, 2.5 fWAR last year.
3) Tyler Cloyd/Julio Rodriguez. Assuming that the Top 10 Phillies prospects (per BA) are off-limits, I’d take Cloyd (8.5 K/9 and 1.4 BB/9 in 146 IP last year, mostly in AA) or Rodriguez (9.7 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 in High A last year). There may be better options available. I do not have the inherent knowledge of the Phillies farm system to give a thorough option, but after researching for a little over an hour, these are two names that stuck out to me. Other than Trevor May or Jonathan Pettibone.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
By the by, I would expect to be able to work out a long-term deal with Hamels before making this trade
We should trade for Vance Worley.
im still shocked that dayton hasnt acquired john mayberry yet...
our high school coach had that monster playing first base for us…yet, he’s a good enough athlete to play CF in the major leagues

He's patient at the plate. He plays a good defensive outfield.
And he is a beast of a human being. All of 6’ 6" and 230 lbs. Has natural power for his size.
Also, I love the fact that he outperformed Philly’s Golden Child Domonic Brown.
We should trade for Vance Worley.

yeah...it took him awhile b/c he had to entirely rebuild his swing...
but success couldnt happen to a nicer guy

A year or two ago could have happened.

Philly may like his versatility
He’s a really nice bench player for an NL team.

shouldve used him as a major piece in acquiring a closer rather than giving that douche papelbon 50 million

I think they want him be in the mix at 1B while Howard is out
Although they did just get Wigginton.

Can't Answer Question with Informaton At Hand
If AG will sign an extension I don’t want to trade him at all, for virtually any price. If he won’t, I’m looking to trade him this winter.
I like that he’s THE dayton moore.
Let's just trust the process.
