I'll be honest and say I didn't see this coming...
I could have swore everyone knew we were going to be terrible this year. Hell, even before we lost Cassel/Charles/Berry/Moeaki, I didn’t think we’d make .500 with our schedule.
Were there really a lot of people that expected us to win the division this year or something?
MAJOR LEAGUE (The Royals)
Rachel Phelps (Royals Management): I think he'll fit right in with our team concept.
Charlie Donovan (Royals Fans): That reminds me, I was going to ask you. What exactly *is* our team concept?
Absolutely not.
Lack of depth is Pioli’s fault. Injuries are not Haley’s fault—how many teams could lose (arguably) their 4 most important players for the season and not falter? I always liked Haley’s attitude, and we forget that he brought the team out of the swamp they were in earlier this year to win 4 in a row. Such a stupid move. Especially if they hire Josh McDaniels.
I agree for the most part
Injuries/ lack of quality depth are not Haley’s fault. Disagree that Moeaki was one of our 4 top players.
I thought Haley was a strange hire in the first place. Not all bad results, but seemed intent of trying real hard to be the HC, while sometimes not always having a clear vision of how to go about things. Is a good coach in a lot of ways, but really has to get over himself.
I blame Haley zero for what has happened with Cassel out. But the Miami and Denver games, we were not prepared to play football, and got our asses kicked. There was no excuse, and for that, he should have been fired. I just thought they would wait till the end of the season. Not sure what they gain doing it now.

On the one hand, he led a great turn-around last year
On the other hand, getting repeatedly blown out is going to drive ownership crazy. You can blame it on the injuries, but good coaches seem to find ways to at least be competitive no matter what. I think it’s pretty clear that Haley was not a good coach, at least for now.
Fair enough,
but when said injuries are to the only star players you have on your team (Hali and possibly Johnson aside), they can be pretty devastating. With those injuries, the lack of talent across the board anyways, and the much tougher schedule this year, it’s not surprising that the team is getting beat like this. I would have at least let him finish the year, personally.

Pretty stupid IMO
I wonder if there was some conflict between him and Pioli. It just gave them a reason to fire him. I thought he was doing fine considering the #1 schedule and all the injuries.

My second cousin's mother-in-law is a real estate agent in Johnson County
And says Charlie Weis is looking at condos in Leawood and is thinking about ditching the KU gig to come back to the Chiefs now that Haley is fired.
It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest
that having Weis in town again reminded Pioli that he was going to fire Haley after the season anyway.
Well, this is Pioli’s team now. Guess they win 12 games next year without Haley, huh?

Clearly Haley had to go
He was the one man responsible for having Palko as the backup QB, no legitimate NFL RB behind Charles, and drafting guys like Tyson Jackson, McCluster and Arenas.

I just learned for the first time that the Chiefs spent two second round draft picks on McCluster and Arenas
That’s mind boggling.

Yeah, and that was in a very, very good draft
There were a lot of good skill players left, and at a time when the team could have drafted at about any position. McCluster pick, especially was odd at the time, and really looks bad now. He sucks.
by Rufus R. Jones on Dec 12, 2011 1:04 PM EST up reply actions
I felt
like they thought McCluster would be the next Darren Sproles with the short stature, but lack of muscle to hold onto the ball.
It’s beyond me why they’ve insisted on handing it off to McCluster between the tackles this season so often. He gets demolished 95% of the time on those plays. He’s OK if he gets the ball “in space,” but that’s as a 4th WR, not out of the backfield.
yeah, they've just used him wrong
even with that being the case, the guy has averaged 4.84 yards on 130 touches this season. he’s not the bum people make him out to be. utilized correctly in space, i could see him averaging 7-8 yards per touch next season.
ideally he is a hyrbrid player
having him go between the tackles was asinine. send him on sweeps and tosses when he runs. maybe a few draws and counters to mix it up. slants, screens, circle routes for passing. if he were used like that, i think people would see how dangerous he is.
Seems like a really smart draft pick
If you’re the Patriots and have your starters set and have some decent depth and a buttload of draft picks and you’re just looking for an added wrinkle or toy for your offense.
It didn’t make sense at all for a team in such dire need of depth at so many positions like the Chiefs.

No, the Pats drafted starters after McCluster
Mainly Rob Gronkowski, the best young receiving TE in football. No other team was likely to draft McCluster until at least a round or two later. It was Pioli thinking he is smarter than everybody else, and it was a bad mistake.

It's one of those things that's obvious to everyone but the Coach and OC
I thought it actually insane that Haley kept deciding to use TJ and to a lesser extent, Battle, as the primary ball carriers when Charles went down. It’s like Haley is allergic to stats or something.
Anyway, your assessment of Dexter seems to be aligned with my own

I personally think McCluster's number of touches is fine
But that Battle should have been given 2-3 times as many carries as TJ. You can put a fork in Jones.
He turns the ball over
That makes him worthless.

Of course, let him average 6 yards a touch

overall the 2010 draft is looking very good too
were those two reaches? maybe, i’m not so sure. seems like football fans want every single draft pick to be a star, which isn’t possible. i’m not as devoted to chiefs as i am to the royals, so maybe i’m easier to please.
The good teams draft well
the bad teams don’t. KC has spent the better part of the last 10 years as a bad team.

Agreed
I like what little I’ve seen of Arenas. He’s a nickelback, but he’s a darn good one and a good special teams player as well. For round two I don’t think that’s all that bad.

He's also playing behind 2 pretty good CB's
You almost always have to take BPA, but I would almost argue that they should have drafted a player in more of a position of need.

Agree for the most part
but how exactly can he justify sticking with Palko all game yesterday?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
Honestly
I think it was a big middle finger to Pioli: “I know you’re going to can me anyway, so why should I give you the satisfaction of being to watch the guy that your buddy (Ferentz) told you to draft and/or help him develop for next year when I’m not going to be around anyway.”
Either that, or (and this is very likely, too) Haley is just one of these egotistical maniacs that irrationally sticks with guys/plans for far too long because (a) they can’t possibly be wrong; and/or (b) if they change their minds, then they are “flip-floppers” who don’t know what they are doing. I think a little humility and reasonable, rational assessment could go a LOOOONG way toward making sports organizations more successful, but then you have to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, you’re not the greatest thing since sliced bread and may not actually have all the answers. I don’t think there are too many of those sorts of guys (the humble/rational kind) populating the highest levels of professional sports.

Either Haley really wanted Palko as the backup
Or Haley made it a point to start Palko to show Pioli what a bad idea it was to have Palko as the backup, as an FU on his way out the door. Either way, I think Haley is partly to blame for this Palko fiasco.
Or maybe Haley is just a huge fan of "Rock Me Amadeus"

by marbotty on Dec 12, 2011 4:44 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Inconsistent
I’m fine with it because, injuries aside, Haley has been very inconsistent. He changed his approach to the offseason, due to the strike of course, but that backfired. He was a swashbuckling gambler last year, but if anything has been overly conservative when nothing was to lose in game management this season. The team has been completely blown out 5 times this season. Some obvious rifts opening between he and the GM. Finally lost his cool and got flagged and called out by the refs in-game, which is rare in the NFL.
I think he and the GM aren’t on the same page, and when that happens after a GM has been in place 2 3/4 seasons, it’s the coach who gets the axe.
While I obviously don't think Haley is the primary culprit in the disaster this season has become
I don’t think Haley is cut out to be a head coach. His personality is just far too “angry, drunken uncle” to be successful at a position that generally requires you to be cool, calm, collected, and rational 99.99% of the time. You can be fiery and emotional, and go off half-cocked occasionally in an effort to motivate people when you’re a position coach. But nobody wants the captain of the ship to be that kind of guy.
Haley actually reminds me of Captain Tupolev from “The Hunt from Red October”.

Was it because his team seemed out of control yesterday?
That series where they gave up over 80 yards in penalties, including an unsportsmanlike conduct on Haley might have been the last straw.
Any rumors on who they might replace him with?

I'd like a coach that actually played high school and college football, i.e., . . .
. . . not somebody like Todd Haley. Every other current NFL coach played in college.
Obviously, a coach need not have played college ball, but . . .
had Haley played college ball, Jamaal Charles would not have been injured.
Yes He needed to go..
He did a great job of maturing players but overall he was too immature and not ready for the HC position. He will get hired as an OC somewhere…
"Stay Classy Kansas City"
That's what people around my school say
They (collectively) say that he was immature as a HC, wasn’t ready, didn’t honor the position like he should, and didn’t demand consistency because he wasn’t himself.
The McCluster thing is interesting....
Why in the world do we keep trying to run him between tackles? Makes no sense to me. He’s a speed guy and has to be outside to run.
The pick was an interesting one to say the least but it wasn’t a bad pick. We just don’t know how to use his talent to put him and us in the best position to be successful.
Agreed
See my comment above, we said about the same exact thing. He can be a useful player. Probably never on a Darren Sproles level, but he could be utilized more effectively than they’ve done since drafting him.
I don't think he can
His balance is terrible, and he can’t hold on to the ball. Those are very bad attributes for a RB, and he’s just too short to be a consistently effective receiving weapon. If you’re going to draft a “small” running back, he has to have a very low center of gravity and be pretty thick in the legs. McCluster is very short, but he’s proportioned much more like a WR than a quality “small” back like MJD, Rice, Sproles, etc. It was just bad scouting/projection by Pioli’s staff. A terrible pick.
by Sweep_the_Leg on Dec 12, 2011 2:20 PM EST up reply actions
Bad pick for a 2nd Rounder
I do think he can be useful, but will never be of the value you need out of a 2nd rounder. Same with Arenas.
I think it was way to early to pick him
But he is where he is. Not a great pick. Should have gone OL again (as I will say until we have one, lol). But we have him and now that we have him, he’s not going anywhere…. he is useful if used right.
Arenas is a good nickel corner and a good return guy
He could be a number 2 corner in a year or two, I think.

I think the thought was more of a receiver a la Welker.
But when the QB doesn’t have time and Teams don’t respect the run it hurts your passing game a lot.
I agree on the second round criticism, but I think if you only use him in space he’d be a lot less frustrating.
by WURoyal on Dec 12, 2011 3:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Chiefs have a young exciting core of players
Especially on defense. We need help along both sides of the line. We need a new offensive line strategy, actually. Wiegmann needs to give way to Rodney Hudson immediately. We had Gaither and wouldn’t play him over Barry Richardson, for crying out loud.
I do like the personnel for the most part, and I really hope Romeo stays as D Coordinator. McDaniels would be fine as a coordinator, not as a head coach (but he wouldn’t be given the same amount of power as he had in Denver regardless).
It was obviously a toxic situation between Pioli and Haley.
by WURoyal on Dec 12, 2011 3:19 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Yes, he needed to go
Purely on wins/losses his record doesn’t seem so bad. But its clear he was heading in the wrong direction. Guys like Haley – yellers – can only coach in one place for so long until their message rings hollow unless they are winning. And its clear he had a bad relationship with Chan Gailey, Charlie Weis and Scott Piloi. When you have a bad relationship with the major people you work with, maybe its time to look in the mirror.
Yea, it sucks he lost major parts and Pioli didn’t provide him the depth he needed. But even a decimated Chiefs team shouldn’t get absolutely blown out the way they have. The Texans have lost two QBs, their franchise RB, their best defensive player and their Pro Bowl wideout this year and they have ten wins. Now their GM I’m sure has provided better depth than Pioli has, but I think you also have to work with what you have, and too often the team just looks utterly unprepared and disorganized.
I think Haley (who I never liked as a hire in the first place) would actually succeed as a HC somewhere. I do like his gambling attitude (the stats says he’s right to go for it on fourth down and onside kicks as often as he does it). But he needs to learn better personal relations skills. Belichick and Parcells are not the friendliest guys in the world, but they don’t piss off everyone that works with them either. Learn some humility, learn to get along with others and he could perhaps succeed. But not here. Bad fit.

Not sure Houston is the most apt comparison
Foster missed only two games, and Schaub only three (so far). And they’ve also benefitted from one of the easiest schedules in the NFL… Their victory against Pittsburgh is the only one against a good team, unless you count their victory against the Titans back when CJ was trying to set the record for fewest yards per carry in a season.
Your thoughts on Haley are spot on, though

Ehhh. He got along fine with Romeo it seems. He’s too much of a meddler and too strong in his beliefs offensively to get along with any I coordinator though. But I have a hard time blaming him for not getting along with Pioli as well. Two peas in a pod, I believe.

I liked Haley.
I liked how aggressive he was.
Every report I’ve heard/read for the past few months has talked about his strained relationship with Pioli. Apparently they really didn’t see eye to eye on the Tyson Jackson draft pick. Pioli also undercut him on crediting Cassel’s development to Weis, who actually told Haley that Cassel was his to deal with. Pioli was waiting for his opportunity to can Haley, and finally got it now.
The shittiest thing about all this is that Pioli seems to be hitching his wagon to Cassel and has reportedly intimated that he has no desire to draft a QB in this draft. Awful decision.

This would be even worse than Cassel.
I watched Stanzi for nearly three seasons. He made awful decisions in crunch time, held on to the ball way too much, and threw so many unimaginably ill-advised balls that I have zero faith in his ability to play capably at the pro level.

I guess I don’t care for him, but I’m curious why he’s drawing the huge negative reaction from Chiefs fans over rumors he is the #1 target? He wasn’t particularly successful in Denver on the field, but he did blow up a team that was stagnating, and that team is now in first place. Shouldn’t he get at least partial credit for that?
Is he an abrasive personality or something? I guess I don’t know much about him. I know he was OC in New England and he’s in St. Louis now.
