Mitch Maier Non-Tender Vigil Open Thread
Will MITCH get to come back to summer camp next season, despite the higher rates for 2012? Yost seemed to talk about him an awful lot in the paper, but was he actually thinking of someone else?
The drama is unbearable.

Why is the consenus that Getz will be tendered?
Not that I disagree with that consensus, but I’m trying to get a handle on what it’s collectively based on.
Is it because there aren’t a ton of infielder options?
Is it because we assume the FO just likes him and will refuse to give him up?
Is it because we assume the FO will overvalue grit and make a poor decision?
I’m curious as to which factors are leading us collectively, to expect this thing.
I'd say because the trade of YamYam
It looks like they’re gonna hang on to Getzboy

Mainly just the grit and irrational overliking by Dayton and Ned
But also the lack of any other 2B options currently in-house, and the fact that Getz has at least one option year remaining make him stashable in AAA.
Personally, I would have rather just have kept Yamaico. But work ethic, lack of grit, etc., etc.

I was 14 in 1980
back when the best radio option was KY102 and MTV hadn’t been invented yet. Journey, Foreigner, REO, Styx, Boston, Van Halen, etc. Barf. The only cool new stuff was Springsteen, the Clash, the Talking Heads, AC/DC, the Ramones, and Zevon. We hadn’t heard of rap yet.
However, my impression is that 14-year-olds could get away with a lot more shit then than they can now.

Age: 30
Career WHIP of 1.186
Career ERA of 3.30
K/9: 8.3
BB/9: 2.4
I don’t know how much he could improve, though, and coming to MLB with his numbers make him a “meh” in my book. But it would be interesting to take a flyer on him. That can’t do any worse than Yasuhiko Yabuta.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
He was a starter in Nippon. Looks like he missed time in 2009 due to injury
It may be a long-shot risk worth the taking if the price is right.

Mitch would be a loss
He’s good Cain insurance, and a left handed bat, which we need on the bench, particularly if the catcher or utility guy is right handed.
Getz is just terrible, though I’d be find optioning him to omaha as depth/filler if he didn’t get paid jack squat until Colon is ready for a call-up.

Unless Lough Is
As good or better, I see no real in house options. Dyson is just a novelty.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
Maier should have the edge just due to defense
I am not sure Lough can really play CF on any sort of regular basis. At the plate, they might be close — Maier’s last year in AAA (316/366/470) looks pretty like Lough’s 2011 (318/367/482). Mitch’s walk rate jumped in the majors (to 10%), so he might project a little better for 2012 than Lough.
If He Cannot
Plat CF, we’d need Dyson, too. I’m not sure that is a good thing. A bench of C, Renteria, Lough and Dyson is uninspiring at best, and powerless.

I'd be alot more ok with that than most other options.
Not 2 years though. Come to think of it, I’d probably rather see Punto for a year.

by mitchfreakingmaier! on Dec 12, 2011 6:12 PM EST up reply actions
Punto has been about as good as hitter as Renteria over the last few years
(300 wOBA since 2009 vs. 293 wOBA) and has rated much better defensively at SS (6.2 UZR in 800 innings vs. 2.1 UZR/150 in 2000 innings) (SSS warning applies to Punto).
And, yes, I cannot believe it has come to advocating for Little Nicky Punto.
Does he still know How to Play the Game the Right Way?
Or is he too far removed from his Twins days?
by Sweep_the_Leg on Dec 12, 2011 6:25 PM EST up reply actions
He Had A
Freak spike in offensive stats in 2011. I suspect more judicious use of his minimal talents and the switch the the NL might be the culprits.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
by philofthenorth on Dec 12, 2011 6:44 PM EST up reply actions
Even without 2011, Punto's numbers in 2009 and 2010 (289 wOBA) would still be about the same as Renteria
His career wOBA is 296.
Punto really should not play full time (although he might be able to match the 2011 version of Alcides if he got the same playing time), but he has virtues as a bench player — he plays a mean SS and can play 2B and 3B too, he switch hits (which complements Escobar and Giavotello), and he should come dirt cheap (he signed last year for 1 year and less than $1 million).
(he signed last year for 1 year and less than $1 million).
That would make it more palatable, but will Nedgar go Bloomers and give him 300-400 PA’s?

Getz vs. Dyson Spring Training Showdown!
(assuming the veteran utility guy is acquired). I bet Getz gets time in CF in spring training.
And keep in mind the Royals can cut any of these guys in Spring Training for 1/6 their 2012 salary.
You're probably right

Interesting
Twins let Mijares go. Might be worth a flyer as a bounce back candidate, and his splits vs. LH are OK (not great). Even last year, he pitched tolerably against LHB.
Anyone see the Lee Judge's earnest love song to Kendall in his Star column?
I’m a few days late to this, but Jesus, the tone of that column, and the comments rub me the wrong way. Its the elevation of “manliness” or leadership over measurable things, the tiresome numbers vs conventional wisdom debate.

He has been my favorite Royal over the last couple of years.
The Dodgers signed Tony Gwynn Jr. to a two year deal yesterday. That was crazy. That news must have been comforting to Mitch. If Gwynn jr. gets a multi-year contract there must be a home for guys like Mitch in this league. Nothing against Gwynn jr., he just is not as good a baseball player as Mitch.

A fly ball is such a joy for me. UZR doesn’t like him in CF that much, and he doesn’t have the arm for RF or bat for LF, but used correctly he’ll be good to have for another year at least.
