RRCCA IV
So apparently croooooooooooooooooooow is desperate for another one of these. I took on the "massive" task of this effort before, but fortunately for the enjoyment of all the dedicated Royals Review readers I have plenty of time to burn...
Without further adieu the theme for this Royals Review Community Compilation album will be to submit one song that is a guilty pleasure or a song that you wouldn't typically like. This could conceivably blow the doors off the previous compilation albums or it could be a steaming pile of pig vomit.
The rules are simple send a youtube link to the email address in my profile and please put "RRCCA" in the subject line, and this time I will actually attempt to put this playlist in some sort of order instead of haphazardly throwing it together in the order they were submitted. The goal is to be able to throw this up in time for the Friday work day... Or until I get at least 12 or so entries
One last thing... Shouldn't this have been originally called the Royals Review Community Mix Tape... Of course I doubt the youngins even know what a mix tape is.

I modified the wording a little bit... But Im only doing one playlist...
So if you submit multiple songs I don’t know if I’ll only submit one of them or both… Probably just one.
If you submitted two songs I’ll just use the first song submitted unless otherwise specified

This is a really interesting theme
I do a “Track of the Day” with some friends where we share tracks via email, and we did this theme one week. We all have unique likes and dislikes in music, so for some people, a “guilty pleasure” is actually other peoplle’s “mainstream” (i.e. an indie rock fan picking a Carrie Underwood song, or a hip-hop fan picking a Death Cab for Cutie song). Collectively, it was more a collection of pig vomit than brilliance, but
i have total faith that this one will be a masterpiece
See, this is where I'm SOL
I actually like a lot of stuff. I really don’t view anything as a guilty pleasure, as I have done my damnedest to eliminate that thinking from my appreciation of music/film/television. If it works, it works, you know? This meant I couldn’t choose those 80s pop gems or that smooth-ass yacht rock I do love so. I really had to go outside of my wheelhouse.

I'm as guilty as sin...but getting your neck bowed over taste is fairly pointless
my fave band is so much more cool and sophisticated than your favorite band is pretty narrow ground. If it exists. Actually, if it exists, I imagine that ground to be a habitat for black unicorns, and dotted with hair dressers and antique toy shops. You know, metal cars and vintage stuff you vaguely remember/imagined from your childhood? I totally respect efforts to treat it all equally and with an open mind. Being a musician gives you more credibility than most of us have, but in the end, you like what you like, and defending those tastes or lording it over others is throwing caution to the reckless wind. We only have so much time on the earth, why waste it defending the stone cold grooves of Pablo Cruise? Also, Some people don’t give two shits about music. And that’s fine. By some people I’m obviously referring to Lee Judge.

Saw Him With
Leon Russell at Cessna stadium at the height of Leon’s popularity. Billy was introduced as Reverend Billy, and opened the show with some gospel numbers. Leon just wandered onstage in the middle of a song, unannounced, picked up a Les Paul and played out the song on guitar.
Then he sat down at a grand piano, butted up against the one Billy was playing, and it was on; two non-stop hours of Leon and Billy. There were probably at least 20 performers on stage. I’ll never forget it.

I'm not a fan, but the appeal makes sense to me.
Good players, unusual line up, jam oriented for college kids, horn section for boring old people and a bedroom falsetto for the ladies. I think he sucks, but I get it.
I only listen to Dave Matthews without the band...
Usually just him and Tim Reynolds… I have a friend who would blow the dude if given the opportunity, and he talked me into learning some of their riffs on guitar… Ever since I have been addicted to learning how to play all of his songs… I’m not really a fan of his voice, and I don’t pay attention to lyrics… But the shitty guitar player in me is fascinated with his guitar work.

this is a tough question and I will handle it in the best way possible:
As of the age of 18 I had not drank or smoked, and I fell in with a group of guys that showed me the ropes. They were huge music fans. They played guitar and worshipped Seven Mary Three, Guns ’N Roses, Kiss, and the like. This was 1998.
Dave Matthews showed up on the scene as a primarily acoustic guitar player set in an electric band that the mainstream had never before heard. As Dadunca points out, they had a little bit for everyone. Namely that Tim Reynolds had taught Dave Matthews some mad licks on the guitar, Stefan Lessard was literally a world-class bass player, and more credit was given to the band probably because they had roots- black men on drums, strings, and saxophone. This was a whirlwind for the music scene at the time, because they were a house band with chops that played pop music for the masses. And Dave Matthews was charismatic- telling dirty jokes in between songs while straddling the good-guy-in-a-corrupt-world image.
So there I am, 18 in 1998 exposed to “adult” music that was catchy, and damn they could play too. This was beset in a world just removed from the onset of Brittany and Backstreet and the likes. During my first year at college, I skipped two finals to see DMB without knowing a lot, other than my friends thought they were the coolest (and their first CD is damn good). The show they put on involved Tim Reynolds on electric guitar in Ames freaking Iowa. It was magnificent.
Then came the Dave & Tim Live at Jesse album that provided some of the best guitar work that has been displayed in a pop culture setting. An acoustic album just as the “acoustic scene” was hitting big. No one wanted to hear the studio version anymore; they wanted the stripped down “real-to-life” version. Dave & Timmy provided a little of both.
Dave’s image proceeded as a drunken do-gooder, and he populated the mass media with talk show performances showing his quirky potty humor, but all-the-while remained highly musically talented and charming. So…my theory on “what is it with Dave Matthews?” is that the band actually has talent and they provide something that is done damn well that appealed to a lot of people that didn’t try to punch you with an agenda. The appeal was for the average joe and for the clinical musician, and found a niche in the acoustic field just as it was emerging, like the Titanic hitting the ice berg.
I loved Dave Matthews at the time, and still find a spot for listening to his, and his band’s, music. I will say that Everyday was about the most disappointing album I have ever heard, period. Their last album was a return to former greatness, but I see Dave now as a Jimmy-Buffet type that will long endure fame and success, but will never again be a huge player in the “it” crowd or popular music scene.
I am the one who knocks.
I forgot the part at the beginning where...
my buddies worshipped Dave Matthews…these were guys that payed attention to all the lyrics and loved mainly hard rock
I think it was those first couple CDs being very good and the lyrics that talked about being “an ant marching” (anti-establishment), or “tripping billies” (drugs), or “what would you say?” (social) that struck a chord without being overbearing
Dave just seemed to be the missing link that showed fans there was another world out there besides hard rock or even jam rock…they became a mainstream fusion band…just the next evolutionary step
I am the one who knocks.
Guess I just missed it when I was at the right age to pick him up.
Thanks for the story though.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
Hold on, you say they paid attention to the lyrics and they loved KISS?
Something about your story does not jive.
I always assumed...
That even though Spinal Tap was aimed at the whole music industry, that it was focused on three bands. Aerosmith for being full of idiots, the Rolling Stones for not being as good as they were perceived, and Kiss for being ridiculous.

they KNEW all the lyrics...
judging them was another thing…
we loved 7M3 because the lyrics were amazing and it was pure straightforward rock
we loved Guns ’N Roses because, well, they were fucking awesome
and two of them loved KISS, the one mainly because his brother took him to see KISS when he was like 5 and got the taste of vodka in his mouth from Gene Simmons spitting it into the crowd (charming, I know)
so there you go…further exemplifies the move towards Dave Matthews and something that was very musically challenging, but less ridiculous
I am the one who knocks.

Come on Croooooow
You’re too smrt for that kind of comment.
I just mean the genre in general. I’m well aware of the myriad influences it has had on the music that I enjoy.
But I can rarely dig its repetitive and been-there-done-that nature.
Similarly, I know that Jimi Hendrix was a pioneer. I don’t like to listen to his music at all.

Sure, yours is a common complaint.
I wish more people knew the difference between favorite and best.
Zeppelin Was A

Zeppelin's biggest influence? I daresay Robert Johnson.

I could see maybe where the catalog up until Crash may have been appealing.
Post-Crash, they’re especially bad. Then again, jam bands have never really had any appeal to me.

Unless you count South Austin Jug Band as a jam band.
Though I don’t think they’re even playing together anymore.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

They're still together, I believe.
I certainly hear their name on KUT (Austin’s NPR affiliate) often enough.

Beat me to it.
My kids and I just watched an Emmett otter Christmas show from 1977 on Netflix. Pretty rad. Kid didn’t show much interest.
I am the one who knocks.
Someone explain this to me:
Soundgarden rules all ass.
Rage Against the Machine is pure frenetic genius.
So why in the hell is Audioslave so devastatingly awful?
I am the one who knocks.
Ughhh... Painful
I liked the very first Audioslave single… Hated pretty much everything since… So it was even worse for me to get that excited only to be ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED!

I think it was the limitations of the principle members were exposed in Audioslave.
Without the hypnotic rhythms of ‘Garden, Cornell’s lyrics become a little cliched and silly.
Tom Morello, innovative as he is, just pastes together a couple of Zeppelin riffs and calls it a song. With a frontman with a range like Robert Plant, this is more obvious. I mean “Cochise” IS “Whole Lotta Love”. At least the vocal melody is at any rate.
I've been saying that about Cochise all along too

I've thought about this too (and I don't think Audioslave is awful per se...)..
but a couple thoughts:
Cornell’s vocals just aren’t the same as they were in 1992. He somewhat shot his vocals.
Rage’s rhythm section was great for pure, unrestrained anger, but not for the mellow-ish material that was suitable for Cornell. Audioslave’s material was mostly pretty mellow (with exceptions like Cochise and Revelations, which were great songs). Cornell was also clear that he wasn’t interested in singing political lyrics, which changed the focus of the band somewhat.
I think Audioslave’s final album is actually underrated, for what it’s worth.

Anybody here get the HD channel Paladia?
well its an HD music channel that pretty much only shows Concerts… Well they showed a Soundgarden performance from this past summer… And Cornel’s voice is shot… He can’t hit any of the old Soundgarden high notes… Jesus Christ Pose was unlistenably bad

It's kind of a sad reflection on the modern state of rock
that last year, Soundgarden released as a single a B-side that had been left off Badmotorfinger, and it was still better than just about anything else out there right now.
That’s sad to hear. Jesus Christ Pose was lightning in a bottle – a brilliant track equally dependent on meticulous drumming and Cornell’s vocals.
