#Royals/#BlueJays deep into talks for Soria. Royals love D'Arnaud.
He's a Top 50 MiLB prospect. And a Catcher.

I can’t believe no one put it up here. From Sickels.
1) Travis D’Arnaud, C, Grade B+: Borderline A-: He would be an A- or maybe even an A if he was more effective at throwing out runners and struck out less often, but he can really hit and is still a superior prospect even with those weaknesses.
My view
If this is an option, do it. D’Arnaud will hit. If he improves defensively then he will possibly take the job from Salvador. If Sal never hits, then this is our next starting catcher. Either way, to have both up in the bigs at some point next year would be sweet. If we get TdA we let him mature in Omaha and give Sal the chance to show he can hit.
I would assume we get an arm that’s really far away also if we did this deal. But who knows.
The question is
Can he play other positions?
If Sal hits remotely well, then it would probably be better to keep him back there for his defense.
In which case the question is what other positions can D’Arnaud play? Is he a cOF guy? Can he play second? Or is he a C/1B/DH type?
If we moved Myers to the OF because of what we think about Perez, why go out and acquire another C? Why not Marisnick or one of the Blue Jays supposedly very good pitching prospects?

Myers wasn't moved because of Sal
he was moved because his bat advanced beyond his catching

I'd like it
Soria’s contract isn’t a huge steal anymore, and his performance last year casts some doubt on his future. Seems like a good value trade.
Meaning: It's a good time to...
…buy low on Soria.

This would be a very good deal
Blue Jays seem to be in “were gonna be good and we need a closer to put us over the top” stage…….I would take this in a heartbeat.

I would take it if it were D'Arnaud or maybe someone like Drabek or Henderson Alvarez.

I get to some degree you got to get the best of whatever you can get...
But I would think Catcher is the position of least need…. Because even if Perez sucks at the plate, it sounds like GMDM will have him back there purely for his defense.
I’ve got to admit I find it to be a little bit of a head scratcher.

Even if Perez sticks, we still need another catcher.
I love the idea of an offensive catcher. I believe that defensive catchers are overvalued generally, because most “defensive” catchers are merely average defenders and some, perhaps many “offensive” catchers are average defenders as well. Anyway, I think you take this trade. If Perez hits and D’Arnaud hits, then you’ve got 2 great options. And let’s not forget that people get injured and people fail.

This would be a great move
A catcher who can hit is a great asset. I dont believe he’ll steal the job from Perez, but it gives you a bench bat/DH option if he’s the backup. Good for the post-Billy Royals.
Or flip him as the centerpiece of a deal. But I believe the Royals will need to maintain a high percentage of players who will be making the minimum or in the first 1/2 years of arbitration. This guy would be a great candidate for a Mike Napoli type of role. Wonder if he can play OF?

Hmm...
Would be a great return, but it doesn’t address the massive hole in our rotation..

Soria isn't bringing Ricky Romero or Brandon Morrow.
So uh… since you aren’t going to address the massive hole either way, why not get the best talent you can. Sort of like the draft. Drafting based on need is the best way to lose out on the best talent. So yeah.
I think Dayton should try to package Soria to get a quality SP
Package deals are always more difficult to negotiate, but there’s plenty of time, we have plenty of trade chips, and there is some demand for Soria. If we miss out on D’Arnuad because the Blue Jays sign someone else and we have to have Soria pitch for us again next year for a reasonable salary, it doesn’t really hurt the team.
If Soria was blocking someone, then I’d be more eager to jump on the first good offer (like the Melky trade). But Soria and Butler are our two biggest trade chips left [assuming that 1) we are trying to lock up Gordon, 2) the good young guys are untouchable], and we need SPs, so I think we need to see if a Soria package can get us what we need. Otherwise, I don’t see how we’re going to get it.
We have to improve the rotation
But each individual deal has to be done to maximize value. Given the market for relievers if we could do this deal I’d be satisfied. It cuts salary. Addresses an area where we lack organizational depth. And d’Anraud is a great prospect. If Sal’s bat doesn’t play all that well, Sal can backup

Maybe at the catcher position
You need to look at needs at some point…if we traded Soria for a major league ready 1B/DH or an outfielder, that wouldn’t do us much good.
Haven't we been bashing DM for years based on only trading for needs?
It greatly limits any potential trade partners. Like the draft, I think you should always draft the best player/talent available.
I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

Of all teams, why are the Blue Jays looking for a closer? Seems random.

One could do worse.
A team consistently finishing in the fourth of its division and not yet primed to break out shouldn’t be throwing money at closers.

They just got Sergio Santos
I agree, it does seem odd.

I don't buy it
Doesn’t seem like an AA kind of move to trade a top positional prospect for a reliever. That said, I would love it if it happened. The Jays prefer Holland and I would not hesitate to offer Holland for D’Arnaud. D’Arnaud was voted the #15 overall prospect in baseball over at Minor League Ball (higher than any of the guys in the Latos trade) and there is always demand for catching.
Trading Soria for a catcher???
But Salvador Perez is a lock to be a good MLB catcher!!!

This must be the anniversary of the Montero rumor
I doubt it’s true, makes sense for the Jays to try to drive up the price for Boston who was rumored to be interested last week

Key questions about D'Arnaud
Is he a “quality receiver”? Can he calm down pitchers well? Does he have the character and spirit of a field general?

Just because the Royals "love D'Arnaud" doesn't mean the Jays are considering trading him
But if Dayton is able to get a top 50 prospect for Soria, I would have been impressed a year ago, and would be even more impressed now. From AA, no less.
Pina and D'Arnaud are pretty much the same guy

I strongly feel that there are some comments that are so sarcastic
that to use the sarcasm font actually takes away from the effect of the comment.
