Royals Inexplicably Bring Back Yuniesky Betancourt with One-Year Deal

The Royals satisfied their search for a backup shortstop today, bringing back former Royals favorite Yuniesky Betancourt with a one-year contract. Terms are not yet disclosed. Betancourt, who played with the team from 2009-2010, hit .252/.271/.381 with 13 HR and 68 RBI last year for the Brewers, good for 0.5 Wins Above Replacement (per Fangraphs).

The 29-year old Betancourt hit .253/.282/.384 in 222 games with the Royals after being acquired for pitchers Dan Cortes and Derrick Saito. He was dealt just over one year ago to the Brewers with Zack Greinke in exchange for outfielder Lorenzo Cain, shortstop Alcides Escobar, and pitchers Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress.

This could be the prelude to a major deal. You never know with Dayton. He is crafty like a fox.

His offensive numbers (pun!) might be a little better if he's only used against

And while he’s a bad full-time defender at SS, he can hold down the position as a back-up. His range won’t be stretched at 2nd or 3rd.

It comes down to money and his attitude and/or work ethic as a back-up.

by Bronzillo on Dec 20, 2011 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

because he is coming from the SS

position. Converted SS’s almost always make passible 3Bs. Its a much easier position to play, and he has the arm.

Moose could NEVER play SS. he would be a much bigger laughing stock than Yuni ever was there.

by Bronzillo on Dec 20, 2011 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

Have you actually WATCHED Yuni play defense?

Yuni is a “shortstop” in the sense that teams would foolishly have him stand between the third baseman and second baseman while the other team was batting.

that is admittedly a terrible effort

by yuni-tard. I dont like the guy at all. backups dont make good starters. he is a backup. he isn’t coming back to KC to play 150 games. he will get 100 abs.

by Bronzillo on Dec 20, 2011 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

So if the Royals just put me at SS for a few games and then I switch to 3B, I automatically become better than Moose at 3B just because I stood at SS for a while?

Doesn’t work that way. An AVERAGE defensive SS will likely be an above average 3B (not necessarily a 2B, ask Aviles how that went)…but a godawful SS could still not be that great at 3B or 2B.

you dont become better than moose,

by Bronzillo on Dec 20, 2011 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

3rd and SS are completely different

Yuni’s never played 3B and will struggle if he has too…. Yes at SS you need more range but at 3RD balls get hit harder and on to you faster. You need to be quick and have good reactions…. At short you play deeper and have a better angle to the ball

Yuni is probably better than both Gia and Moose to now just saying he would suck a little less at 3B than SS.

You are backing away. That’s probably smart..as you were sounding pretty damn crazy. Fact is, Yuni has absolutely no range whatsoever and that hurts you at EVERY POSITION ON THE DIAMOND outside of catcher and pitcher. He is a godawful SS and likely a bad 3B and 2B. Yuni’s range is bad for a SS, Gia’s range is bad for a 2B. Different levels of bad.

by kcdc1 on Dec 20, 2011 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

How so?

They are both middle infield positions that require relatively equal amounts of range. Shortstops make more plays because there are more right-handed batters, therefore the position is more highly rated. But as far as range goes, they are about as neutral a position as you can find on the field.

We should trade for Vance Worley.

by JKWard on Dec 20, 2011 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

you know thats not true

through out baseball history, SS’s with limited range have moved to 2B and suddenly have plus range.

Its almost a cliche to think so.

by Bronzillo on Dec 20, 2011 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

I know that throughout baseball history that

some shortstops that move to second base have been perceived to be graded as having better defense overall.

Range is only one aspect of defense, which is what we are talking about, and it isn’t something that gets better or worse based on where you stand on the diamond. Poor range is poor range.

We should trade for Vance Worley.

We should trade for Vance Worley.

by JKWard on Dec 20, 2011 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

It does translate to better range at 2B and 3B than the range he had at SS.

It does NOT translate to being average, or better than other players in particular, at 3B or 2B. That is what you were arguing and that’s the point people were arguing against. Now that you are trying to twist the argument, I’d just suggest dropping it, as it is unbelievably obvious that you no longer stand behind your original statement.

Killing time until time kills me

by EspeciallyK on Dec 20, 2011 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

If the argument was range is less important at second or third

I could get behind it. But range doesn’t improve by position. Just the effect it has on how defense is rated.

We should trade for Vance Worley.

by JKWard on Dec 20, 2011 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

sure it does

there is less ground to cover at 3rd than SS. Hence, a SS with poor range might have good range at 3b because it is relative to the avg player at that position.

I absolutely do

I think Yuni is probly a better defensive player than Moose at 3rd and Gia at 2nd. Both of those guys are much better hitters of course so I would be terrified to have Yuni starting at either spot.

I cannot say much on Betancourt

Basically cause I never saw this guy play. However, what I can say is..Moose played 63 games less then Betancourt…and came out with a better OPS! This tells as far as slugger and on base “Moose” is much better. Giavotella played around 106 games less then Betancourt and came very close to passing him on OPS. So as far as…at bats and slugging…I believe…“Moose & Giavotella” are much better players then Betancourt and also believe they are much better infielder as well. Betancourt, will be a utility guy and don’t see him playing as much as our regulars. Unless something drastic occurs. Will wait for the season to see this guy play.

Moore could have found an above replacement level utility IFer

He chose not to. He picked Yuni instead. Again. Yuni is pretty awful. The Royals had a crappy UI in-house who couldn’t really handle SS defensively. So Moore goes out and signs another one for god knows how much money.

Explain to me how Yuni is an upgrade over Getz. And the fact that Yuni has SS experience doesn’t count for anything as he is genuinely horrible defensively.

Moore thinks Yuni is pretty good. And that is precisely the problem and the reason that this signing is meaningful.

If Moore had been making good acquisitions for years and then acquired a poor, overpaid UI, I would say it was a mistake, but no big deal. The larger meaning, which is that Moore isn’t improving in major league talent evaluation, is the real problem here.

I don't think I've ever said throw $15 million at Oswalt.

I’m not really all that high on Falu either. That’s not the point. The point is that there are literally double digits of players that
1) are equivalent in talent to Yunieski Betancourt, or somewhat close (7 yr career bWAR of 4.2, last 3 yrs totaled 0.7 bWAR)
2) would play for less money per year

Some of those are proven major league players, many more are minor league players that easily have that sort of potential. You could find 2 or 3 career minor league guys on each roster that would be a servicable UI on a major league roster for 100 PAs in 1 yaer.

by Royals Medic on Dec 20, 2011 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

i'll own that argument but it's not relevant here

I don’t see the similarities between Oswalt and Yuni at all. Oswalt is a pitcher who had a injury-filled year in ‘11 after a great healthy career. He could provide a huge value to the team in a position of need if he recovers fully, and he is available for a discount. Yuni is a bad player on the field and at the plate. We are not hoping for him to come back from injury and regain his form. We are hoping he can do something he’s never done before, and do them at higher levels that ever before. And we pay him above-market rates to do so. And he’s a lightning-rod for criticism. I’d rather take a flyer on a prospect who might develop into something, and who we’d have control over than Yuni.

my reaction entirely...

i find the signing amusing…and peoples reactions equally hilarious….people would really have rather had someone like edgar renteria?

Fire Everyone

by billybeingbilly on Dec 20, 2011 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

Renteria was an average fielder at SS last year, and had a .251 / .306 / .348 line.
Yuni was a below average fielder at SS last year and had a .252 / .271 / .381 line.

I’d rather have Renteria, a guy who can get on base and play good defense, than Yuni, a guy who can’t get on base, but can occasionally hit a homerun. To put it another way, they have almost identical OPS, but Renteria’s wOBA is .291 compared to Yuni’s .278.

by Loose Seal on Dec 20, 2011 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

Well, given that Renteria is the better player..yeah I'd take Renteria over Yuni.

Obviously it’s not a gigantic difference, and obviously people are going to overreact on the internet…but this is clearly a bad move. Does this one move kill us? No..but given that people have to resort to the “well yeah this move may be bad/pointless but it won’t kill us” argument so many times with DM, that should tell you that he makes these pointless/bad moves far too often, and they do add up.

Dayton seems to have ZERO fucking plan, ZERO ability to think more than one move ahead at a time. Pissing away Aviles and ending up with Yuni, idiotic. But even worse with the recent selection of Cesar Cabral (sold to Yanks for 50k right?) surely there were I don’t know about 1000 better cheaper options than Yuni for a backup infielder position to choose from? I guess net loss financially was only 1,950,000 with the Cabral money. Great job Dayton! Maybe we can work a deal with the Cubs to get Bianchi back, would much prefer him.

Yuni vs. Getz over the last 4 years

WAR/150 games played

Yuni -.07
Getz +.8

But maybe one thinks that Yuni’s horrendous 2009 in which he had a -2.1 WAR season was some kind of wild aberration and that we should throw that out. It would be stupid to throw it out, but let’s do so anyway.

Yuni +.6
Getz +.8

And yet Moore goes out and gives Yuni $2M guaranteed. Wow. Just, wow.

According to KC Star

Yuni is going to get the chance to compete for playing time at 2B (though he won’t be the starter on Opening Day, or so they say) and the 2B job will be a competition between Getz and Giavotella.

So basically, DM is bending over backwards to get Getz and Yuni time at 2B despite a large amount of data that says they both suck. Awesome…but hey, DM is getting better because..he’s getting better!

Colon was unimpressive in the minors and Betancourt’s .270s OBP is simply not worthy of being a starter.

I don’t understand why you would advocate trading a young prospect from one of our weakest positions for a reliever when our bullpen is one of our strengths.

Archaeologists have determined that the end of the world as predicted by the Aztecs that was widely believed to be occurring on December 21, 2012 is actually off by a year. The new end of the world prediction date is now December 21, 2011. Additionally, the word “yunieski” as spelled by the ancient Aztecs has two meanings: natural disaster and “plus” hands.

Scott is getting quizzed about players he’d rather see signed as “slightly above replacement level” utility infielders for considerably less than $2M.

Adam Kennedy – signed $800K
John McDonald – $1.5M (x 2 years)
Ramon Santiago – $2M (x 2 years) – more of a 1+ WAR player
Nick Punto – $1.75M (x 2 years) – closer to 2 WAR than 1

Chad Yonker – I like it! So many of y’all fail to look at the overall picture. Yuni is coming it to be a utility backup infielder. Most of the guys who fit that were 37 years old. The only thing left is to have one of our young guys make a big step forward toward the starting rotation in spring training. Monty, Crow, Mendoza – I’m looking at you!

Tim Marks – Don’t know why all the hate on Yuni…didn’t he just tie for the Home Run lead for the Royals two years ago?

Mark Burton – After a little thought, I know some people hate the Royals for bringing back Betancourt and claim he is such a terrible fielder, but his career fielding percentage is .970 and Escobar is .972. Not much difference. He can back up second, short, and third and need I remind people that he led the Royals in homers in 2010. I think they will now get rid of Getz, who I liked, but who had no arm for third or short as we saw last year, and had no pop to his bat. I never would have expected this signing, but let’s see where it goes.

Patrick Scott – Wow come on now guys.. betancourt had the best year of his career with us!! Did u forget about that???? He can hit and hes a good defender

Hard to answer that question

Because the Royals broke camp with Aviles and Betemit as the 3B / UI. These guys were deep sixed for Moose and later on Gio was called up, relegating Getz to utility duty. It’s hard to pin down where the PAs for the backups came from, as there were multiple starters throughout the year.

Just guessing

Let’s read the paper in the morning and see what Moore has to say.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

by Scott McKinney on Dec 20, 2011 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't even jokingly suggest that they said he was there to take over 3B

I suggested many things they’d say about Yuni and his talents and value. I think they’d be comfortable with him taking over for Moose if he struggled.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

by Scott McKinney on Dec 20, 2011 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

I would hope Moose would have to be at about 130/160/170 in mid-May

for him to be sent down. they probably would have to be comfortable considering they just gave the guy 2M+. quite baffling. is the royals medical/training staff considered to be top notch, i have my fingers crossed for no infield injuries.

by BeauJackson on Dec 20, 2011 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Rany wrote a great post about how the training staff has really improved in the last year

Rachel Phelps (Royals Management): I think he'll fit right in with our team concept.
Charlie Donovan (Royals Fans): That reminds me, I was going to ask you. What exactly *is* our team concept?

by Royals Medic on Dec 20, 2011 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

i think the white sox are known for having a A+ medical staff

hopefully the injury free 2011 season from the position guys was a result of a better training staff.

I'd be willing to bet that Dayton says

Roughly 80% of that in the KC Star interview.

So, 15 of those 19 words, and that’s with me giving Dayton the benefit of the doubt and rounding down.

The author of the post suggested DM might make

this part of another deal. Anybody have any idea how Yuni could be made part of another move?

Not just one move, but a flurry of them to position us for a run in 2012

Trade Escobar to the White Sox for Alex Rios.
To create space for Rios, trade away Gordon for a middle reliever or something. Whatever we can get.

Trade Cain and Hosmer to the Giants for Aubrey Huff and use him at 1B.
To fill the hole left by Cain, sign Kosuke Fukudome in free agency and put him in CF.

Trade Butler to the Phillies for Raul Ibanez and use him at DH.

Cut the entire pitching staff and sign the actor who played Henry Rowengartner in Rookie of the Year to throw every pitch.

Plaza Parade.

by Soria's Unibrow on Dec 20, 2011 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

You know what though

This is the hardest I’ve laughed at anything in a long, long time. I’m projecting a WAR from him this year in the -0.3 to 0.2 range, with an absolute ceiling of maybe 0.5 WAR in a scenario where he gets far too many ABs and manages to hold the bat right side up the whole time, and an absolute floor of negative infinity, which is where his shittiness is actually intense enough to rip a hole in the fabric of space-time and end the universe as we know it.

BUT.

He provides near limitless enjoyment as a pinata for all of us on here. I anxiously await the new season’s hilarious pictures, gifs, and nicknames for good old Yuni. And really, isn’t that worth $2 million a year with incentives?

by Soria's Unibrow on Dec 20, 2011 10:40 PM EST reply actions

I kinda sorta agree with this...

After Mike Jacobs and Jose Guillen and Dick Ankiel and Scotty Pods and etc. recently, it was kind of weird last year not having a player to actively hate anymore. I mean we all assumed it would be Frenchy, but I think it would be hard for even the most cynical of us to say they hate Frenchy. I even halfway enjoyed his Freedomness last year… I think as Royals fans, we almost need a player to focus our collective bitterness on.

He’s the hero Gotham Kansas City needs, but not the one it deserves right now.

Aw come on

I could never bring myself to hate on Timmy, even though his BB/9 was practically 9.

But yeah, dammit Getz.

by Soria's Unibrow on Dec 20, 2011 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Getz and Timmy...

… felt like cheap substitutes after Jacobs and Hoagie. Yes, Getz sucks immensely, but I never feel like he’s not trying. Same for Collins.

by Tracer Bullet 82 on Dec 20, 2011 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

this is probably true

getz comes off as sort of a tool to me, so i can’t stomach him. collins at least has potential, his wind up makes it hard to hate him.

by BeauJackson on Dec 20, 2011 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

It's all relative...

Aviles seemed like the biggest tool we’ve had in a long time, and I can’t say I was excited to see him go.

Especially now…

I definitely HATED Yuni more than any player in the last few years...

I dislike Getz… but he was more of a non-entity than anything to me. He was just kind of there. Especially once Gio got called up.

I celebrated hard the day we traded Yuni. It was the most exciting part of that trade for me.

by Royals Medic on Dec 20, 2011 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

That's how I felt about Getz too pretty much...

I mean I was always kind of bummed when he’d come up to bat, but if you set your excitement ceiling for him at “semi-clutch single”, he wasn’t someone I could actively hate. It was more the idea of him, the stubborn insistance of the FO/manager to play his ass every day.

by BeauJackson on Dec 20, 2011 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

sleep on the side that is broken

allows your healthy side to get as much oxygen as possible into your lungs. it worked for me. don’t wrap it, get some heavy duty tyenol, take it easy.

by BeauJackson on Dec 20, 2011 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

ok...so the heavy duty tylenol will help with the pain...

to sleep and the oxygen will help with the breathing to sleep….sounds like a genius plan to me

Sorry to hear. I have no idea.

I tell people 1-2 months to fully heal. Shorter if they take it easy and do the right things.

Essentially, don’t be an idiot. Believe me, you’d be surprised how many people don’t seem to get it.

WHAT?

by dubPeacock on Dec 21, 2011 12:03 AM EST reply actions

The best part about this signing is...

…when Alcides starts out the year 0-12, Yost will insert Yuni into the shortstop position for the rest of the year. That’s going to be awesome! Well, maybe not that, but the meltdown on this board sure will be sweet!

It’s either that or Yost will bring Yuni in late in game’s to replace Escobar for defensive purposes. Now THAT will be fucking funny! And sad. And realistic. FML!
