Yoenis Cespedes!!!

Obviously trading Cain means Cespedes is coming. What is the equivalent to a hunting trip for Cubans so Pena, Yuni, and Rodriguez can take him on?

Sounds like a bad deal to me

Three years of top closer/reliever performance at a slightly below market rate, plus SIX years of cost-controlled, probably slightly below average to average CF production, all for just two years of average-ish starting pitching at perhaps slightly below market rate?

I hate when I don't get just make jokes, but Pioli bashing is absurd.

Pioli has been fine. Every criticism I have read about him has been nothing but nonsense. No worthwhile QBs have been available to draft, and the only bad draft was the Tyson Jackson one—and that draft sucked for the majority of teams.

by dejezeus on Dec 22, 2011 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

The Cassel contract figured in as well.

On the positive for Pioli?

Cause really that contract is pretty good. Front loaded when we had space and no other real options. Now he will only make 5 mil next year.

by Royal Tiger on Dec 22, 2011 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Given the market

So, 3 seasons in from a 2 win team with no major (1st rd) QB shift, and the complaint is depth? That is a pretty good direction.

Not to mention, those guys are all adequate options. Battle has been a decent backup RB (even though he was 3rd string), Piscatelli is a below average backup safety with above average ST play (4th safety). Palko was atrocious, but I wonder who had the idea stick with the Pitt QB: the coach from Pitt or anybody else? My guess is the former.

he's added plenty of pieces to the puzzle

asamoah, hudson, moeaki, mccluster, breaston, berry, lewis, arenas, jackson, bailey, succop.

now, just find a QB. i’m horrified by the support Orton is receiving from the Chiefs fan base.

by BeauJackson on Dec 23, 2011 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

he's a piece to the puzzle

averaged about 4.8 yards a touch this year while being used in the wrong role. the potential is there for him to be an quality role player if used right.

i guess the pick could’ve been a better one, but i don’t expect every player to become a star. just as important to get role players on your team as it is pro bowlers. mccluster has played a role on the team and produced, i don’t expect much more out of second round picks.

by BeauJackson on Dec 23, 2011 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

i dunno…4.8 ypt isnt great when compared to other guys like him…and guys like mccluster…they’re luxuries. you dont pick them coming off of a 4-12 and 2-14 season when you have a ton of holes

yeah, gronkowski would've been nice

doubt he’d look the same with mediocre chief QBs throwing him the ball though.

the way i look at is that every player the chiefs get is a luxury until a franchise QB is found. so guys that aren’t complete busts and can fill a role if that QB is found in the near future are a plus for me.

by BeauJackson on Dec 23, 2011 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

and while claussen hasnt done shit....

i liked him with that pick at the time as well

Fire Everyone

by billybeingbilly on Dec 23, 2011 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

McCluster = bad pick

Clausen = legitimately fireable offense
Tate/Gerhart = meh

Cody/Gronk = the right picks. I wanted fat Cody or Spikes at the time.

But back to using a 2nd rounder on Cassel…not a bad plan. Wanted something better than Thigpen to keep things afloat, and the only head turner taken after that pick was Mike Wallace (3rd round).

I’ll admit some of the picks are bad, but I think you are severely misevaluating the success rates of draft picks—especially outside the first round. It is easy to criticize GMDM because we often say “he should do x.” So far, if you were Pioli, you would have taken Clausen. If only the rest of the team was sufficiently terrible, that would have gotten Andrew Luck, I guess.

by dejezeus on Dec 25, 2011 3:02 AM EST up reply actions

i liked cody as well....

but there’s no way he fits anywhere in the 3-4 scheme.

the point was that there were real needs on the team…and a mccluster type wasnt one of them…especially not with a pick at the beginning of the 2nd round

I have no idea who Vermes is or what he does (soccer?), but there's got to be one out there who's better.

It really sucks that Pioli seems to actually be worse than Moore. I was very excited at the time of the last regime change. I still think Haley wasn’t the problem and liked the way he called a game.

Scutaro for Soria?

This trade doesn’t even make sense. The Red Sox are giving up an average infielder for a 25-year old All-Star closer with a light contract?

The Braves seem to be getting about even value. The Royals are getting raped. This makes absolutely no sense for the Royals and Braves. Why the need for the Red Sox in this trade? They’re probably laughing their ass off at this trade. If the Royals really want Jair Jurrjens, I think they could make a 2-team trade with the Braves to get it done. The Royals have plenty of players the Braves would want. Either that or at least make the Red Sox send the Royals somebody in return.

Better yet, why not make a big push for Gio Gonzalez? The Royals have plenty of pieces to make that happen. Soria + Duffy for Gonzalez and throw in some A-ball prospect. Or Wil Myers for Gonzalez. Something like that.

by Terry L. Kelly on Dec 22, 2011 10:38 PM EST reply actions

I'd definitely trade Soria for Jurrjens straight up.

They’re both probably paid at about 80% of their worth on average for the next three years, with effectively equal degrees of team control. The big difference is that Jurrjens pitches about 2.5x as many innings over the course of an average year.

Jurrjens may be a #3 starter, but we could use another one of those. Hell, if we had a rotation full of #3 starters, it would be pretty average – a clear improvement over last year. And yeah, he’s trending down. Welcome to pitchers past age 21.

by moregritplease on Dec 22, 2011 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

There's a a couple of factors you're ignoring here

Fundamentally, the Royals would be selling low on Soria and buying high on Jurrjens. Both such transactions should be avoided in this case. Soria in general should be able to fetch much more in trade than Jair Jurrjens. Buying high on Jurrjens in particular is a fool’s errand—yeah, he had a sub-3.00 ERA last year. But his K/9 rate regressed significantly, and his H/9 rate has yet to get down to his 2008-2009 levels, which suggests his 2011 ERA was somewhat luck-induced.

Also, Jurrjens is NOT a durable pitcher. He has pitched over 200 innings in a season only once in four MLB seasons, and it was 2009. Soria has had his injury problems as well, but not to that extent.

But hey, the guy’s a Brave. He’s gotta rock the mound.

This reads like complete bullshit

1) The Red Sox essentially give up one year of Scutaro, a middling infielder, for three years of Soria at or below market-value.
2) The Royals give up six years of league-average bat/above-average glove Cain and three years of Soria for two years of arbitration Jurrjens.
3) The Braves receive seven years of two above-average players (Scutaro(1), Cain(6)) for two years of one above-average player who has regressed over the last few years.

That is so asinine that I honestly would switch team allegiances.

We should trade for Vance Worley.
