ESPN’s Buster Olney says (on Twitter) that the Royals are looking to a utilityman, preferably someone that hits left-handed. As our Free Agent Tracker shows, players like Andres Blanco, Craig Counsell, and Willie Harris are available.

Craig Counsell just screams to be signed by Dayton Moore.

OT - Moral Question

My wife’s and my parents get our kids way too much stuff for their birthdays and Xmas (we are working on this front, trying to get them to buy one or two bigger gifts, but they insist on the flood method). The kids are young enough that we are able to pull back a few of toys (still in the packaging) on the days without them remembering. We sometimes give them gifts on trips, but still have 5-6 left from the B-Days in the early fall. My wife and I are just thinking of giving the gifts to toy drives this year without telling the kids. I wish I could guarantee the kids to agree with it, but I am not sure. Thoughts?

How old are the kids?

If they are toddlers and won’t remember opening the toys, I think its fine. If they are old enough to remember that they opened the Iron Man action set and wonder what happened to it, that gets dicey.

A possible way to do it

is to sit down with them and discuss why you think giving to the toy drives is important. Then ask them if they’d like to help share stuff they may get for Christmas, ensuring them that they will get gifts themselves too; you can Santa it up as much as you like, but maybe the option is open to allow them to share in the act of giving.

I might just start them out

by doing this: On Christmas Eve, keeping this separate from the other present opening, giving them each two of the presents and telling them they get to choose which to keep and which to give to other kids who need more help. It thus separates it from the emotion of getting all their toys on Christmas, gives them a choice as JKWard said, and also gives them a sense of helping others. At that age, I’d recommend just starting out giving one away.

Choice is a key issue.

We have done and highly recommend the Parenting with Love and Logic programs. Psychology studies show the value of control. We always give our kids a couple options (all that we can live with) and let them decide. It gives them perceived control and makes them much happier.

Example: kids don’t want to go to bedroom to get ready for bed so you ask: “would you like to read books before bed? Or would u like to sing ur ABCs before bed?” This mind game works well. Takes some training and patience. Parenting is hard. It can be so easy to get frustrated.

Xmas? Really?

Seeings how you are celebrating Christmas, and your parents and in-laws are giving gifts to your children, I assume you all are Christians, feel free to go ahead and delete ‘Xmas’ from your vocabulary. While you are doing a great job not spoiling your children with gifts, teach them the reason for the season.
Xmas is a petpeeve, sorry.

I too have done the Love and Logic programs, and those programs have turned our house into a calmer, quieter place. We have better understanding, and a better time together.

Christ is the whole reason some are celebrating this holiday

For others, it is purely secular. If I’m not upset that Christians appropriated Saturnalia and pretend that the holiday is really JC’s birthday, then you shouldn’t be upset that some people refer to it as Xmas, or prefer to say “Happy Holidays.”

Christmas has become a secular holiday

No, it's like saying

that the several origins of these seasonable celebrations matter, not just the one you wish to single out.

If not for the traditions of Yule etc., which were pre-Christian among the people who developed them, Christmas would not exist as it exists today.

Yes, the origins of infinitesimal calculus

are pre-Euler. But without Euler, it wouldn’t exist as we know it today. Applying the Yodazilla rule of succession and assumption, therefore it would not exist.

Is it time for the Yule log yet?

by 2X2L on Dec 5, 2011 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

Mathematical concepts

and days of celebration are not good comps.

Basically what I’m trying to say is that while Christmas’s origins were not necessarily Christian, one cannot deny that Christianity is immensely important to modern Christmas and cannot or should not be ignored (as it is by many).

by Yodazilla on Dec 6, 2011 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Mathematics is a discipline

and not a seasonal festival, but just as with any other human activity it has its conventions and traditions, and they evolve. Most folks who have taken calculus wouldn’t recognize Newton’s calculus, and few would recognize much of Leibniz’s. Euler’s, yes. I think, given a common rudimentary understanding of what mathematics is, it’s uncontroversial to say that there’s something fundamental to the calculus of each of them, regardless of how they’re expressed.

The Roman Saturnalia, pre-Christian Yule, and Christmas in the Christian tradition are clearly not anywhere as much about the same thing; I’m making a very limited analogy here. But there is nonetheless significant commonality that I think should be recognized — and celebrated — by Christians and others. I think it’s good to see past the particular expression of a particular tradition to the things that can be shared. Good exercise in preparation for seasons that are less full of good cheer.

This is not to deny the additional significance Christmas has to Christians as the celebration of birth of Christ. Just as we agree that they cover those great chapters of Luke in Calculus — pick your favorite gospel, but Luke is best on the nativity — we can also agree the Romans were on the whole uncomfortable with the whole redeemer story, so I think the Saturnalia skipped that whole scene also. So let me be clear lest anyone put a rock in my stocking: Christmas has its own unique importance in the Christian tradition.

OK, enough of that. Let’s meet at my house, and we’ll go calculus caroling in my neighborhood. Hot cider all around.

My point with the Saturnalia reference is that way back when, Christians adopted an existing holiday (I believe it was Saturnalia) which was really a celebration of the winter solstice to be the date they celebrated Christmas. So this late winter holiday’s origins aren’t Christian, but it has certainly has developed into something with a great deal of both secular and religious significance.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

by Scott McKinney on Dec 5, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

The point I was trying to make was

that Jeff is Christian, therefore using Xmas is not really the appropriate way to write Christmas, and using Xmas is taking the whole point of ’Christ’mas out of ’Christ’mas.

If you are not Christian, write Xmas all you want, celebrate whatever holidays you like, by all means. Festivus, Saturnalia, ‘a couple of days off’, whatever.

I do wish you are yours a happy holiday season, and to those of you Christians, a merry Christmas.

This is a touchy one really.

Retro’s right about age coming into play, but you also risk the gift givers asking the kids about the specific stuff later on down the line. My Dad is a perfect example of this. He’s so self absorbed that he’d call my kids and ask them about specific details of the gifts before they’ve even been opened half the time. It drives me crazy. Giving some to toy drives is a great way to go, but with my kids I could even tell them that I bought the toy just for that reason and they’d probably go with it. It’s the original giver of the gift in my situation that would screw it up.

Calvin Cycle = carbon fixation (as in, turns CO2 into sugars/carbohydrates)

Photosynthesis uses light (electrons) to turn ADP into ATP (and NADP+ into NADPH).

Then, the Calvin Cycle uses the energy stored in ATP and NADPH to combine CO2 and H2O into G3P (three-carbon sugar/phosphates, aka glyceraldehyde phosphate, C3-H7-O6-P). The important enzyme in the reaction is RuBisCO; if I know my midterms, there WILL BE a question about RuBisCO.

Next, mitochondria (I think) turn the G3P (which is in and of itself unusable) into usable carbohydrates (typically sugars with 6 carbons).

I just went to look it up and dredged up long repressed memories about C3 vs C4 plants. God, I hated plant biology. The reactions were bad enough, but the genetics are about 1000x tougher than animal genetics.

apparently it happens in the chloroplast/cytoplasm for starch/sucrose

also, this

G3P is generally considered the prime end-product of photosynthesis and it can be used as an immediate food nutrient, combined and rearranged to form monosaccharide sugars, such as glucose, which can be transported to other cells, or packaged for storage as insoluble polysaccharides such as starch.
seems like a simple description that would be ripe for a test question.

Publicly funded stadiums have become such a racket in recent years,

so this investigation is by no means a bad thing. Maybe bad for baseball in the short term.

by KeepItCopacetic on Dec 5, 2011 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

It's a really strange investigation

Sounds like the SEC is trying to figure out if the city did sufficient due diligence/investigation into the deal. If there wasn’t sufficient due diligence, the bonds used to finance the stadium may have been improperly/illegally issued. If the SEC ever came to this conclusion, it would be the biggest headache in the world as the City might have to rescind the bonds and eat the $500MM.

Considering the City, the Marlins, MLB, and probably multiple auditors have a tremendous amount at stake here, the most likely outcome is a short investigation, a small fine, and directives to not let this sort of thing happen again. However, the biggest impact of this is that the SEC is going to sift through the Marlins’ emails and the City’s emails, which is going to be very scary for people who would consider doing shady deals like this again.

Even if accomplishments in both functions should be considered together

I don’t think Hodges managerial career was long enough or distinguished enough to put him over the top. Yes, 1969 was magical, and maybe if he had lived he could have repeated that success — almost surely not with the Mets, but in an alternate universe perhaps he could have been invited to return to the Dodgers and to become their manager after Alston instead of Lasorda, presiding over their really good years in the ’70s and ’80s. (He was only 3 1/2 years younger than Lasorda.) But as it was, he had only 5 bad (albeit improving) years with the Senators and 4 years with the Mets, 1 when they were still bad, 1 legendary, and 2 mediocre.

Torre’s a different story. If there are ever any guys inducted on the strength of their careers across the two roles, he should be one of them.

I think it's reasonable to argue

that the Veteran’s Committee procedure for the induction of players became less essential once a couple of generations of players had had a full run of opportunities under BBWAA voting. It certainly became subject to croneyism.

But I would argue that it will be necessary again. With the difficulty in establishing facts on which to base a fair application of standards, I think there will be a need to clean up after their evaluation of the “PEDs era”, once a rational historical perspective has been achieved.

he wasnt particularly good in AA either…

3.21 ERA, 258 IP, 218 H, 208 K, 99 BB, 7.2 K/9, basically just over 2:1 K:BB…. the WHIP is a little higher than you want at 1.22 but the H allowed and the K are fine…

by 306008 on Dec 5, 2011 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

2:1 k/bb isnt great...a 3.8 FIP isnt great...

and by lumping the two seasons together, you’re missing the fact that his bb/9 went up almost 1 from 2009 to 2010.

he was basically the same pitcher as mike montgomery was in AA. i dont think anyone thought that monty was great in AA. if monty has a season like drabek did this year, he’s pretty much off the prospect map…and thats with monty having 4 pitches and being a big lefty…rather than primarily a 2 pitch short RHP

but I thought that by lumping the 2 seasons together I’d be doing your stats a favor. :)

The thing to figure out is why the regression to start with? New mechanics? New pitching coaches? Just not very good anymore? Loss of confidence? What is the reasoning? If you figure it out you can be successful with a guy. That’s why I said that if he ends up as what he was projected it’d be a good deal for KC.

And this, this is just sad

“Where Ray should quickly become B.J. Ryan’s set-up man, his rapid ascent pales in comparison to Ambiorix Burgos. Despite a 5.05 BB/9 in the Midwest League least year, Burgos still managed a 4.38 ERA and 172 strikeouts in 133.2 innings. The big league stuff was there, so the Royals thought to start him in the bullpen at AA this year. With huge problems and a successful start (17K in 8IP) in the Texas League, Burgos was called up April 27.

“Since then, Ambiorix has grabbed the Royals closer role. The results have been mixed — trial by fire for sure — but Kansas City must be enthused with his progress. They must also be excited that Burgos is joined at the back end of the bullpen with 2004 high-A pitchers Andy Sisco and Leo Nunez. 6-9 Sisco, the Royals Rule 5 steal, has thoroughly bounced back from a 2004 riddled with lost velocity and inconsistency. Nunez, who I once compared to Juan Cruz, has proven to be another heist since being acquired for 118 year old Benito Santiago. "

How does that compare to what won the AL Central last year? Verlander/Scherzer/Fister/Porcello/Turner?

Or the AL West? CJ Wilson/Holland/Lewis/Harrison/Ogando?

Mazzaro was always considered a marginal prospect in the A’s organization. GGon is the goods.

As much as I’d like to see Myers in a KC uniform, the team has better hitting talent in the system than pitching. I’d pull the trigger on this deal.

overall, he still possesses a good curveball. but, the increased velocity may have made it a lesser pitch this past season. its just a data point and something to watch for in the future as a possible warning sign. or, it could fix itself and end up being an odd blip on his resume.

Oh, and since it appears that you are attempting to become Mr. Grammar Smartass, allow ME to correct YOUR incorrect correction.

I actually used the conjunction of “it” and “is” correctly. Your assumption that my usage of “it’s” somehow implies possession is actually entirely wrong. The possessive forms of pronouns actually do not use apostrophes, champ. Ours, yours, mine, his, hers, theirs, whose, and… wait for it… wait for it… its.

by Old Man Duggan on Dec 5, 2011 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

I've asked myself that question many times

over the last 15+ plus years.

Seriously, it goes back to a doubleheader they played in New York in ‘71, when they were the surprise of the league. Phil Rizzuto was on the radio for the Yankees (of course), talking about them as if they were something special. I didn’t realize at that age that there’s a surprise in the league every year; anyway, something clicked.

My family moved in ‘73 at not such a good time for me, and one of the things I did to cope was to deepen a few of my unique interests. By ’74 I was reading everything everything I could find about the Royals, collecting the box scores, tracking my own stats. (McRae’s breakout year, Brett’s rookie year that ended in a remarkable surge.)

Later, in high school, one of my friends was from a family who had moved to NJ from KC, and we were the two Royals guys in our senior class during the ’76 ALCS. Everyone else, of course, was for the Yankees, or just not talking.

Some things have changed since then, of course, but one thing hasn’t — apparently my Royals fandom is still at least in part a coping mechanism. I started hanging out here almost full time yesterday and then again today while my son has been in the hospital near where he attends college; I had to get involved in something instead of just waiting by the phone. Can’t work.

Good news: he has come home this evening, and although we have follow-up medical appointments in our area tomorrow, his situation no longer seems dire.

So what is everyones expectations, or I should say hopes, for a Myers return trade.

Seems like if he was traded he should fetch a pair of high prospect starters and a good outfielder. Would everyone “settle” for that or is Myers someone who commands a boatload? Or should the pitchers be MLB ready guys/current players?

by KCTiger on Dec 5, 2011 3:25 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I'd hope for something like Gio Gonzalez or Ricky Romero

- Young
- Starting Pitcher
- Some success in the majors (both in terms of ERA and FIP)
- At least 3 years of team control.
- Likely ceiling of 5 WAR, floor of 2 WAR

I’d be pissed if we dilute our top prospects by not getting a true potential star in return. Pitching prospects are too fickle so I don’t want the centerpiece return to be a guy without some success in the majors.

As a bench coach?

Guillen was a pretty good player in his prime, but he has barely played the last two years, did not play well when he did play, and may not be able to play the field anymore. Having someone who could play 2B and 3B as insurance for the young guys makes some sense, but I am not sure Guillen could do that. I guess a minor league deal with no promise of making the team is relatively harmless.

No Carlos Guillen. He says he's 37, he's probably more like 42.

I’d be very tempted to do a Soria for Gio Gonzalez or Ervin Santana. We have 4-5 good bullpen arms.

I can now say this with a straight face, and it will be accurate: Tim Tebow is a better QB than Matt Cassel.

We're a Wandy/Guthrie/Oswalt away from having a rotation that can be aptly nicknamed

The Expendables.

And yes, Photoshop would be involved, if necessary.

We should trade for Vance Worley.

If the Royals are definitely interested in Gio Gonzalez...

What would we (as fans) be willing to give up for him… Billy Butler… Soria? I have no idea.

Soria and one of Montgomery, Odorizzi, and Cuthbert.

I’d pull the trigger.

2012 is the year we shine.

I would think about that Jack
Soria and one of Montgomery, Odorizzi, and Cuthbert.
I’d pull the trigger.

I would be most hesitant about Cuthbert.

Why are you guys all so high on Cuthbert?

He was in A ball all year.

I think two B grade pitchers is the best hope.

Since he has 4 years of team control left

I’d say two A/B prospects, two C+. or one A, two B.

by BeauJackson on Dec 5, 2011 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

yeah...that sounds awful on our end...

but that pretty much fits your first criteria

i'd have to imagine that is what it will take though

a 26 year old 2/3 starter with 4 years of team control isn’t going to be cheap. if that is what it would take, i’m jumping off the bandwagon.

by BeauJackson on Dec 6, 2011 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

yeah....count me out then...

i’ll wait and get next year’s gio in a market with more pitchers available and where its less likely that theres a wasted year

i don't really want to see myers traded unless you get a greinke level pitcher back

if felix or kershaw is coming to KC for 3-4 years, move myers now. otherwise, i’m not behind the move.

i’d be more open to trading moose than i would myers.

by BeauJackson on Dec 6, 2011 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

I agree on basically every point

It’s just too much we’ve spent too much time developing. Along with Bubba, Myers and and Cuthbert must bring back “for sure” things- Good is not that.

Got to thinkin about What KC got for Bret Saberhagen- 3 very likely starters, solid bats with no defense, 2 of 3 easily in prime. One (Jefferies) considered a future star. All had significant major league time.

Saberhagen considerably greater and more established than Gio, though he was damaged goods. Anybody know Sabes’ contract status at the time? I’m too lazy to look it up.

Ok, for someone wanting to trade Soria, what's a fair return?

Both that would help the Royals and that the other team would accept. I don’t see Felix for Soria straight up. But I’m expecting that even if it’s a fair trade, we hear about how it was Soria for Vin Mazzaro or Sean O’Sullivan and some magic beans. So, before everyone gets all excited or down about Soria for an SP, name the SP that you think is a good deal

by sterlingice on Dec 5, 2011 8:04 PM EST reply actions

I think that Ervin Santana deal aforementioned is pretty fair

I just don’t know if Santana fits for the Royals because of his contract status.

So Soria for like a 2-3 WAR pitcher, with 3 controllable years left. May take us throwing in a B prospect to make it fair.

I don't see Soria for Santana working

A closer for a experienced #3 starter doesn’t seem to add up to me. Soria to the Blue Jays for two B grade pitchers would work for me. Soria for a young 2B who can field and hit would be ideal, but I don’t think he exists.

by BeauJackson on Dec 5, 2011 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

You're right

It would probably have to be Soria plus prospect for Santana.

For Carlos Guillen yet or what? What is GMDM doing by leaving that beautiful offer on the table.

To be the one scout

who is the font of all knowledge, to know and be unknown, to be quoted sub rosa. All this, all this I say, is the acme of the profession.

Also, it’s annoying.

by 2X2L on Dec 5, 2011 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

nuts

I should have stayed with it a little longer. To be quoted sub rosa and read by many would have been better.

I have no patience whatsoever.

Dayton, whatever you do, don't get rid of Myers.

Soria and a B level prospect for Gio Gonzalez or Ervin Santana.

by ProbablyYoungerThanAllOfYou on Dec 5, 2011 9:21 PM EST reply actions

Can't see why the A's would be interested in Soria

Seeing as they have a younger, cheaper closer who they are supposedly trading.
