Is there any other SBNation message board

Where you can get an overflow thread on a day with no game, and the team it’s dedicated to hasn’t really done anything notable?

And aren’t we supposed to traditionally have a nice image to accompany the overflow link?

AP gets 500 comments on the site editor linking to the un-changed depth chart for the preseason games…though that site is weird. Lots of good content, but 95% terrible content.

I think the Thorman's do a good job, actually.

Better than any other Chiefs site out there.

I can now say this with a straight face, and it will be accurate: Tim Tebow is a better QB than Matt Cassel.

Yeah, I have no gripes with the Thormans. They do good work. As does Bewsaf, KaloPhoenix, and some others. But, um, there’s a lot of garbage over there too.

The Thorman's do.

And there is a lot of professional grade content there.
But half the fanposts are reposts of other fanposts(seriously, once saw the same story posted 4 times in a row. Its like none of them even bothered to check) and the other half are just terrible misshapen poorly spelled rants about the team with some sort of tangentially related question near the end to “justify” the post.

My problem with AP

is the comments. So many people over there are such bandwagoners (not as Chiefs fans, they love the Chiefs) but if one person adopts an idea then “BOOM!” everybody all the sudden has their own idea or the same idea and then it just turns into a F*CK HALEY/PIOLI/HUNT/PALKO/whoever fest. Hence, why I’m not a registered commenter over there. You guys are much more fun.

I have an SNES emulator for my android phone, free in the android market app store. From there, you have to find the game you want online and put it on the phone as a file (like a music file) and load the game you want through the mulator program. Not sure if there’s an emulator app for iPhone or not…my guess is no since they seem to be more respectful of intellectual property rights over at Apple…

Civilization I

The original iteration was a ridiculous leap forward for turn-based gaming—just wildly different from and better than its predecessors to an extent that I’ve yet to see matched. The “just one more turn” factor has been much remarked upon, but I think that Civ I invented that concept. In college, I once went on an 18-hour civ binge WITHOUT REALIZING IT…looked up to find the birds chirping outside and that I was hungry as hell for some reason.

I think they want him back, but not at the commitment it would require, but they can’t publicly not sign him over money. If Miami signs him for 10/250 or whatever ridiculous sum it;s supposed to be, that gives them political cover with their fans. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they felt like they ‘had’ to offer at least 175 or something and hope he says no.

Catch 22. If they get better it sucks if they get worse it sucks becuz it further validates his career. He is supposed to walk out a skeleton after a 68 win season.

by KC_Satchmo on Dec 6, 2011 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Hard to say. You can look at what Theo did in Boston, but it’s a totally different situation he’s taking over in Chicago than what he had in Boston in terms of budget and talent on the field. Fielder doesn’t seem like he’ll age well, especially in the NL, but he’s also a lot younger than Pujols so hard to say. He doesn’t really fit in with a rebuilding project.

Let's just trust the process.

by trusttheprocess on Dec 6, 2011 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

I actually believe he'll age better than most people think

What’s the worst that can happen with him? He gets fat?

Srsly tho, I wouldn’t want him past about age 35, but you can get him for his prime, you can sell tickets while you rebuild. (Not that tickets will ever be a huge problem for them) I dunno….just seems like a good fit for them.

Does anyone regret how the 1st round of the 2011 Amateur Draft turned out?

I wasn’t around for the fallout discussions. Seemed like everyone was glad we took Starling with how the first four picks ended up, but is anyone upset about not getting Bauer or Cole or Hultzen or Bundy?

I mean could you imagine if we took say Bauer with Hultzen still available and Bauer busted and Hultzen turned into Lincecum 2.0?

I talked to a Royals person today, and I got the sense they’re just looking to add a utility infielder type. I don’t think they feel they’re ready to contend quite yet, and they’d just as soon run out the young kids than invest some serious money in a veteran starter.

Yankees get: Gio Gonzalez

A’s get: LF Brett Gardner from Yanks, 1B Clint Robinson from Royals.

Royals get: RHP David Phelps, OF Michael Taylor, and a PTBNL from Yanks that is expected to be off 40-man roster.

Yes, having Robinson around in case something happens to Butler/Hosmer is nice, but if his defense is as poor as I hear..

You have to analyze the Royals’ piece of the trade without emotion. Clint Robinson for Phelps, Taylor, and PTBNL. I’d trade Robinson straight up for Phelps, much less the other two. (I’m in a FB battle on this one. I don’t know why I even bother).

I like Phelps and Taylor.

Taylor seems like a reclamation candidate. I don’t know what happened between ‘09 and ’10 but if he can ever hit like he did in ’08/’09 then I’d take him for Robinson straight up.
Phelps seems like he’d be good organizational depth and maybe be an MLB starter in the next year or two

OT question

For those of you who live in KC but not in the city limits, do you still claim that you are from Kansas City? It’s far easier to say that you’re from KC than Gladstone, for instance.

I consider Kansas City my home even though I live in Smithville and go to college in Liberty, for instance. Is that legit?

by Yodazilla on Dec 6, 2011 10:21 PM EST reply actions

Depends on the context

If I were you, I’d tell anyone outside of KC that you’re from KC, because they’re not going to know where the heck Smithville, MO is. Locally, I’d represent Smithville.

BTW love that there are plenty of Northlanders on here. I grew up in St. Joe, live in KCMO (Liberty School District). Would like to move to Smithville someday.

Melky had no business in that huge CF

He makes more sense on the corner.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

He does

but not primarily in right in that ballpark. They don’t always prefer to put an outstanding outfielder here, but when they don’t, they prefer to move him to left in the late innings and late Nate clean up after him.

Having to hear nonstop "taking my talent to South Beach" jokes will suck.

And yet the similarities

between the Heat and the Marlins are growing. Reyes and then Pujols…they’re pulling a free agent coup. Watch them somehow sign Prince Fielder and make him a legit 3B.

Yes, it seems that way

but much remains in doubt. They’ve landed only Reyes so far, and Hanley Ramirez is apparently not going to be as accommodating as A-Rod was for the Yankees when they were oversubscribed at shortstop. So while they’re definitely making enough noise to generate some interest — and maybe even a few ticket sales, as a change of pace, for the new ballpark — they’re not quite at coup warning level teal as yet.

It's getting to that point in the Winter meetings where the rumors start to reach Junior High School levels...

•Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times spoke to an AL GM who said “no way” to the Angels’ rumored interest, while Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says the Cubs are “definitely not” in on Pujols (Twitter links). Whether or not those two clubs are involved, the Cardinals and Marlins still appear to be the favorites.
•Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com (Twitter link) spoke to two Angels people who were “shocked” to hear they were considered the mystery team for Pujols. However, Danny Knobler of CBS Sports and Jon Heyman of MLB Network are both hearing that it is, in fact, the Angels (Twitter links).

And then Sally said that John actually likes Becky, but Becky doesn’t know it yet. His best friend Jimmy says he might ask Becky out on a date later, but can’t say when that will happen. John denies all these rumors when asked….etc…

MAJOR LEAGUE (The Royals)
Rachel Phelps (Royals Management): I think he'll fit right in with our team concept.
Charlie Donovan (Royals Fans): That reminds me, I was going to ask you. What exactly *is* our team concept?

Now they are saing it's only Marlins and Cardinals

If there was a mystery team, they’re not currently under consideration.

And the Cardinals believed offer is for more than 22 million a year over 10 years according to this article:

“Mozeliak declined to describe the Cardinals’ bid, but it is longer and carries a greater average annual value than the nine-year, $198 million tender made in January.”

I would guess its not much more. Probably 10 years and 225-230 million. My hope through all of this is that Pujols would re-sign, but he immediately tapers off and at a contract cost that sandbags the Cardinals long-term.
