Winter Meetings Day Three Thread Three: Is Nothing Gonna Happen?

No news is good news? No news is bad news? Apparently Mark Buehrle has left the AL Central. Can't say I'll miss having to look up how to spell his name for the game threads during his monthly start against the Royals much.

We got some news!

From Dutton

#Royals looking to trade INF Yamaico Navarro to clear space for a pick in Rule 5 Draft. Pittsburgh, Seattle and Houston are possible fits.

by focs on Dec 7, 2011 7:08 PM EST reply actions

I kind of like Navarro though. And aren’t we already shopping for a utility IFer? Are we now shopping for two? Won’t we have to clear roster space for said future utility IFer?

Let's just trust the process.

I feel that way with a lot of AMC fare.

I feel like I’m supposed to like Mad Men yet cannot make myself give a shit about a single character on the show.

I feel like I’m supposed to like Breaking Bad yet found myself wondering what the big deal was after finishing the first season.

I feel like I’m supposed to like The Walking Dead yet find myself consistently underwhelmed and aggravated.

Agree completely on Mad Men

I like BB but mostly for the fringe characters.

Walking Dead on the othr hand I really like, despite some truly maddening plot inconsistencies. I keep watching it for those moments where the tenson caused by impending Zombie dinner actually makes me uncomfortale. It only happens maybe once every 3 episodes (which is a problem) but when it does, for me, tv just doesn’t get much better.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KC_Satchmo on Dec 7, 2011 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

the problem with the current season of the Walking Dead (spoiler alert!)

is that the zombie attack scenes took up about 17 1/2 total minutes of screen time (and 10 of those minutes were in the season premiere). And, yes, the high school scene played out over an entire episode, but was shown in only a handful of 30 second segments.

by Gopherballs on Dec 7, 2011 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

My biggest problem with this season so far

Zombies sitting in church pews. Really? C’mon writers!

Couldn’t agree more about not enough screen time. I watch every week just hoping for more of the HS scene or the walker herd scene. Those moments are so go that it makes everything else worth it to me.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KC_Satchmo on Dec 7, 2011 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

the church pew is consistent with the zombies sitting in cars

(which I found weirdly creepy) and maybe consistent with Morgan’s wife trying to open the door — the idea being the zombies retain some faint memory of doing things right before they died.

by Gopherballs on Dec 7, 2011 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

I don't remember any live Zombies in cars

The church doors were closed. I get what you’re saying, but I’m just having a real hard time with Zombies opening the front door, close it then have a seat (nicely spread out btw) and stare at a cross when there’s an insatiable hunger inside them.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KC_Satchmo on Dec 7, 2011 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think the zombies go hungry wolf crazy until they see and smell live prey

I think the zombies sitting in the cars was when Rick and Glenn were walking around Atlanta covered in guts. They were just sitting in cars until they see something happening and then get out of the car. I thought it was a nicely weird touch. There was also the “sleeping” zombie in the tank. At the church, I only remember them sitting there — I guess zombie life is pretty boring until a stupid living human stumbles your way.

I was late on Breaking Bad and Mad Men and ran through the series on Netflix and just loved those two shows

I enjoy going back and forth with liking, hating, liking, hating the lead characters. Then with most the supporting cast they kept me interested in their lives and development.

With the Walking Dead i was really excited for it, but found myself hating the lead, Rick, and just wishing he would die. stopped watching that show after the 5th ep Season 1. Just highly disappointed. It’s all been done before

by SagehenMacGyver47 on Dec 8, 2011 12:54 AM EST up reply actions

Does The Show

take more than just dimensions into account when simulating how parks play? The right field line at AT&T doesn’t really play like a “short porch”, so it could turn out to be as nice for your lefty slugger as Todd Helton said it was.

by 2X2L on Dec 8, 2011 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know the answer for sure, but here's my @oh so learned@ opinion

The Show 08 (I think, maybe 07 or 09) used to play parks to their dimensions – it was harder to hit it out of Kauffman than the smaller parks (it was particularly noticeable with PetCo in SD, which is really small—in real life it’s the weather that dampens the hitting stats). In The Show 11, I don’t notice this happening almost at all, which makes me think that it is forcing all parks to play about the same (emphasis on “about”). I notice a little effect when playing with the short, tall wall in SF RF, but it’s really hard to tell without keeping track by writing it down – which I might do, I’m a pretty big nerd. But the fact that I don’t notice much difference leads me to believe that there is not much effect.

For instance, there’s this weird minor league stadium in the game where the CF fence is like 275 ft out (yes, really – was it a programming snafu/typo?), and you’d think that basically any fly ball to CF would be a HR and there would be tons of them. Instead, it plays about normal, with no large jump in HRs as far as I can tell.

I realize that was more than you, or anyone, wanted to know, but there it is.

by Old Man Duggan on Dec 7, 2011 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Not really. I just think that, as good as chen is with his command, Buehrle is that much better

He doesn’t K anyone, but he also doesn’t walk anybody.
But most importantly? He just doesn’t give up a lot of home runs.

Which is practically a minor miracle. Consider: The cell is probably one of the worst parks for HR’s. It’s 5 year average is 1.3x more home runs than normal. Yet Buehrle actually has given up only about HALF as many HR’s at home than on the road.

It seems Buehrle can just locate his pitches better. And he also seems to get more guys to swing at borderline pitches.

Honestly I think he’s just magic.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
The Monkey-Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey
and
Perversion for Profit: The Politics of Pornography and The Rise of the New Right by Whitney Strub

I feel like my iPhone has really gotten in the way of my reading, but this could be me just making excuses.

It's on my shelf too

But I decided to read Norwegian Wood first. Looking forward to it.

No

Had no idea to look for one. Netflix?

It was supposed to have been theatrically released this year.

It was, as they say, big in Japan.

To my knowledge, it’s not been released stateside yet, but it could have slipped past my attention.

I'm almost through the second book. Good so far.

It hasn’t really grabbed me like Hard-Boiled Wonderland or Wind-Up did, though.

And for the record

I read Sputnik Sweetheart, After The Quake, South of the Border, West of the Sun, and Norwegian Wood in a sitting, so he usually gets his hooks into me.

RR is now my favoritest blog

Between the book talk and the Magritte joke above, it confirms just how much sharp people will waste good talent and time on bad baseball.

I Once Gace

An extemporaneous review of Eldridge Cleaver’s Soul On Ice in my HS English class. I hadn’t been in attendance for over a week, so it was a complete surprise. It was just a a book I had recently read. Big hit in all white TWHS in 1973.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Just started Glamorama - Bret Easton Ellis

I’m also attempting a comprehensive review of the 1991 Playboy catalog.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

Cook Books

I’m trying to transition from eating only sandwiches and one meal courses to making casseroles and what not. Basically i’m entering the leftover phase of my life. No more fast food for lunch, etc.

How?

How did we get any minor leaguers with even intriguing peripherals for Navarro?

by Cwide on Dec 7, 2011 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

They are out for Betemit at 3B

Navarro fits the bill if Alvarez continues to be bad

Those names have to be made up

Who the hell calls their kid Yamaico?

by bas on Dec 7, 2011 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

by BeauJackson on Dec 7, 2011 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yep

Hard to tell from the stats in the Dominican Summer League. But that’s why they pay scouts.

But I think you mean Appy league, AZL, or Kane County.

He’s not going to jump to Wilmington.

You throw inside a lot intentionally. You actually have good control.

Scouts say he has good control I think. Must have been focusing on pitching inside to increase the Ks and get guys off the inside of the plate.

No fear

His BR page says 255, but I’ve read 270. Here’s his Twitter profile pic:

He might be smiling, but Kendall-esque arm tats say he could kill you if he wanted. No one’s gonna charge him.

It's all ball bearings these days!

Anyone else that gets the MLB Network...

want to jump into their TV and dropkick Kevin Millar? In the face? Really hard?

by Sweep_the_Leg on Dec 7, 2011 11:00 PM EST reply actions

Sounds like an interesting topic.

If you had the power to jump into a tv and dropkick people, Chris berman tops my list.
