Cole will probably be gone by the time the Royals pick at #5. Bauer is one of the more polarizing players in the draft. The fact that he doesn't want to conform to a team's training regiment makes me think the Royals will pass on him. Schaum has said he thinks Bauer will be the best P from this draft.

Bauer seems to have a whippy action across his body

I’m no scout or kiniesiologist, but it worries me. Yea, its a bit like Lincecum, but he’s not getting Lincecum results. The Ks aren’t there, the velocity isn’t there, and he struggles a bit with command. Doesn’t seem like a recipe for success.

He’s not quite as good as Lincecum was, but he still put up 11.34 K/9 in what should have been his Freshman season. He turned 20 two weeks ago.

I don’t see any evidence to suggest he struggles with control.

He says he’s got his 4 seamer up to 96 last year.

From BA in June:

No one needs to alter Bauer’s stuff. He fires an explosive 92-94 fastball, adds an excellent 81-82 change, and sprinkles in a 76 curve now and then. Bauer’s best pitch is his 84 slider, already a plus big league pitch and a portion of his arsenal that is blatantly unfair to college hitters.

He’s gotten hit more than Lincecum has but he’s a really young kid. Absent injury, he’ll be a great ML pitcher assuming he has some good movement on the FB (maybe switch to a two seamer).

Lincecum vs. Bauer

Bauer age:19 11.3 K/9 2.8 BB/9 0.7 HR/9 8.3 H/9 1.23 WHIP

Lincecum age:20 12.9 K/9 6.6 BB/9 0.4 HR/9 6.7 H/9 1.47 WHIP (Freshman year)
Lincecum age: 21 11.2 K/9 6.1 BB/9 0.4 HR/9 5.4 H/9 1.27 WHIP (Sophomore year)
Lincecum age: 22 14.3 K/9 4.5 BB/9 0.6 HR/9 5.4 H/9 1.10 WHIP (Junior year)

Bauer is still really young (just turned 20) and if he shows an uptick in velocity, he could move up draft boards in a hurry.

Touche

What exactly is his training regiment?

The article nwroyal linked above described it pretty well.

101st Airborne?

It’s training “regimen.” Not to single out Retro or NWRoyal, but this is like the fourth article this week I’ve read that used that word incorrectly (a supposedly-edited Bill Simmons article was the worst offender).

Stoked for the season

I live a fence hop and 5-minute walk away from Jackie Robinson stadium where UCLA plays. It’s gonna be really exciting to have both of these guys going each weekend.
I hope to make it out there for the Friday night games at the very least.

Maybe I’ll try and provide some scouting reports. It would be a fairly novice effort but when CSUF played UCLA in the super-regionals it was pretty easy to tell Christian Colon was the most advanced and athletic person on the field.

I have said this before

and I will say it again…I have a good relationship with Bauer’s high school coach and get this

the #1 starter at Hart High School when Bauer was there was Mike Montgomery

Bauer is Brian Bannister with more talent…his regiment is awesome and he is not afraid…he has that 6th tool that I love in prospects…again. I will say this again he will be the best P in this draft…but, he is not quite the guy the Royals need to select…

he is against everything the Royals believe in…however, Montgomery long tosses as well…but not like Trevor

UCLA is playing at Nebraska in March

Looking forward to seeing both these guys in person
