Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Tampa Bay Rays – At present, this looks like a committee. Jake McGee(notes) is the guy that many of us are rooting for, because … well, because the alternative is Kyle Farnsworth(notes). Or Joel Peralta(notes). Or Juan Cruz(notes). Eventually JP Howell(notes) could claim a share of the ninth, but he's recovering from shoulder surgery and isn't likely to be ready until May. McGee has the traditional closer's arsenal (slider, mid-90s fastball), though he's also a 24-year-old lefty with only five major league innings on his resume, so he'll have some work to do this spring.

Like I said,

We are the future Rays, so of course Rays are the past Royals

Joel Peralta as a closer option?

This seems like a Pirates problem. Except the Pirates are pretty well set at closer with Joel Hanrarararahan. AND Evan Meek setting up. Oh well, I see Rays on the decline big time. My AL East Projection: Boston, Toronto, New York, Baltimore, Tampa Bay

this is not one of those times.

thats insane...tb is still likely a top 5 team in baseball

they could possibly fall behind Toronto if torontos young guys take a big step up but there’s zero chance that the orioles finish above them

They still are...

Boston being the first best, Toronto being the second best, New York being the third best, Baltimore being the fourth best, and Tampa Bay being the fifth best.

Do they have a Royals complex?

This is looking like our roster littered with former Braves.

I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

the White Sox need to get a few more former Royals to catch up

I never really disliked Joel Peralta

He had a good year last year. I think the Rays could do a lot worse (Farnsworth and Cruz come to mind).

Hating Zack Greinke irrationally since 2010.

I really don't get why he we let him go

Seems like a nice righty-killer at the back of the pen.

In his last season with the Royals, some really bad HR/FB luck did him in

HIs career number was right around average (as is true for the vast majority of pitchers, HR/FB being essentially luck) at 10.6%. In his last season with the Royals, it swelled to 18.8%, leading to a horrible ERA. Unsurprisingly, his HR/FB regressed back to something more normal (8.3% and 7.1%).

This is a good example of how understanding stats can really help a front office. The Royals FO overreacted to a performance element which is essentially just about luck, and lost a pretty good, cheap reliever.

You may know me as NYRoyal.
