Beyond the Box Score Podcast Rewinds Itself, Previews 2011 AL Central
As if the lure of hearing my dulcet tones discuss Jason Kendall and the other lesser stars of the 2011 AL Central along with host Dave Gershman and special guest Nick Scott of Royals Authority wasn't enough, Dave also interviews Phillies prospect Jiwan James. And yes, sorry in advance for the blatant self-promotion.

I think so
I don’t have an iPhone/iPod/whatever… if you follow the link to the BtBS post, you can read how to get an ITunes subscription.

curious how you recorded this
..as i’m still intrigued by the possibility of a RR podcast. although i don’t know if twenty minutes of Scott and I yelling at each other about the relative merits of Mike Jacobs’ bat would be particularly entertaining
batter nine you sucky
I don't produce it, Dave does
but it’s done with Skype and some free program call “Call Graph” or something like that. It’s supposedly pretty easy.

Are you kidding me? It would probably be the best thing in the history of recorded sound.
In all seriousness, I’m also interested in a RR podcast. The real challenge would be coming up with something somewhat novel and fresh. It wouldn’t be very interesting to have the podcast just be a rehashing of the same things posted on this site day in and day out. Sure the first one would be interesting because you’d get to hear everyone’s voice and find out what the interaction would be like, but that would get boring quickly. It would have to have some worthwhile content beyond what has already been posted and discussed frequently.
Of course the novel, added dimension would be the live discussion aspect. We’d get to discuss and react to each other’s comments and ideas. I just wouldn’t want it to be an audio version of what people have already read on the site.
Some technically savvy RR member should try to put this together. Skype is easy enough for everyone to use. If one person can use “Call Graph” or something like it and create the podcast, we might be able to create something interesting. Or a terrific failure. Either way, it would be entertaining.

Sounded great to me
Everyone sounded good. Someone needs to tell Dave Gershman to make himself slow down. I have that problem too and it takes a good deal of effort, but it’s worth it. And Matt, you sounded at least as articulate as the average mid-market sports radio sports talk show host, with considerably better content. You’ll have your own Toronto-area sports radio show in no time. You’d better get to work on hockey stats.

d'oh, hockey
A few years ago I decided I was going to “get into” hockey, so like any good sports fan, I planned to do so in the right way. Not by WATCHING hockey, of course, but by reading a bunch of books about it! Uh… well, i was pretty burned out on books, so…
In any case, my rule-of-life seems to be that I can only be “seriously into” one sport at a time: as a kid, it was football, in college, it was basketball, and as an aging adult, baseball.
But yeah, thanks. Trying to get better about not blabbing everything I think about everything. I just felt like I had to say that one last thing about Moose at the end because maybe I sounded too negative about the Royals. I really am pumped about the system, although I’m afraid my getting excited about Moustakas will jinx him just like I did Alex Gordon… so… MOOSE SUCKS BLAH BLAH BLAH

Yeah, in the three years I lived in Minneapolis, I gave hockey a shot, but it never took. Other than hockey in the Olympics, I’m just not interested. But if one wants to become a sports journalist (newspaper, radio, tv, etc.) it helps to be a generalist. Single sports analyst jobs are few and far between. Personally, I’m sticking with baseball. I’ll go as far as that takes me, even if it never takes me anywhere.

hockey and soccer are so weird to talk about...
its like if the only baseball stat was HRs and some unofficial version of batting average, especially soccer
I know there are more (passes, assists, etc) but they dont work in the same linear fashion as baseball stats tend to
I know little about hockey, but I think +/- is supposed to be a big stat
+ or – net goals scored when that player was on the ice. I don’t think it’s exactly a sabermetric stat though.

hockey's also got the 3 stars of teh game thing
which of course isn’t official, but is weirdly widespread
thats a fun stat that is starting to be used in basketball more and more....
i read a really good artcile the other day about the heat and they broke down the +/- of the combos of lebron/wade/bosh being on the court…i found it to be very interesting and it’ll give me something to watch for

It's very RBI like in it's context dependence
Hockey teams are divided into lines, and not all all lines are created equally.
A guy on the 4th line, sent on to rough up the opposition and play hard and physical while not necessary too concerned with scoring might be contributing just as much to the overall win as the first line guy who happens to be on the ice when lots of goals are scored.
Or you might be an outstanding defensive player on the checking line, which exists to nullify the opponents first line of heavy scorers. They might still score, and your +/- will take a hit despite playing very well yourself.
Newell At LWJ
Is using some interesting stats to review basketball. I’m not sure how well they work, but they sound Saber.
