Pedro Feliz Is Our Link To Another Time

Pedro Feliz will be 36 this season. That's old, but not crazily so. Feliz made his Major League debut in 2000, at the generic and completely uninteresting age of 25. Again... whatever. Look, guys are old. Blah.

However, he got his start with the early '00s Giants. Thus, when Feliz shows up at Spring Training, these are some of the guys he can talk about playing with:

  • Ellis Burks
  • Robb Nen
  • Benito Santiago
  • Shawon Dunston
  • Eric Davis (really? yes)
  • John Vander Wal
  • Andres Galarraga (seriously, early '00s Giants?)
  • Tim Worrell (ok, not as good as Todd, but still)

Star-divide

  • Reggie Sanders
  • Kenny Lofton
  • Tom Goodwin (former Royal!)
  • Ray Durham
  • Edgardo Alfonzo
  • Marquis Grissom (and this was in 2003 even!)
  • Eric Young
  • Jeffrey Hammonds
  • Mike Devereaux
  • Dave Burba
  • Ricky Ledee (actually, Devereaux is made up, but you believed me)
  • Moises Alou
  • Jeff Fassero (in 2000 freaking 5 and 2006)
  • Steve Finley
  • And of course, Barry Bonds, Mike Matheny and the still playing I think Omar Vizquel. You know who else played with Eric Davis? Pete bleeping Rose.

We must record everything Pedro Feliz says while we can. He's our best living source for baseball history from the mid-1980s through the present.

I like this move. Veteran for depth chart purposes, but also to help Moose learn from a WS third baseman until he gets brought up.

Feliz can get back in touch with ED, who I'm sure is tight with Rose

and put him in touch with Moose

of course, Kendall has veto power over any mentoring decisions

    Actually

Most on FB think this is another cheap move where the Royals will simply trade him away come the All-Star Break. Even more ridiculous.

    And

Babe Ruth played with Ray Mueller for the 1935 Boston Braves
Ray Mueller played with Joe Nuxhall for the 1944 Cincinnati Reds
Joe Nuxhall played with Pete Rose for the 1964 Cincinnati Reds
Pete Rose played with Eric Davis for the 1986 Cincinnati Reds
Eric Davis played with Pedro Feliz for the 2001 San Francisco Giants

so the 2011 Royals are 6 steps away from Babe Ruth! (granted, the really old Base Ruth who quit in May 1935, but)

Mike Aviles is only 7 steps away from Base Ruth (Ruth-Waite Hoyt-Bert Haas-Minnie Minoso-Harold Baines-Kip Wells-Mike Aviles). There making him less valuable.

    Although Betemit is 6 steps away from Ruth. Ruth-Bill Dickey-Yogi Berra-Tug McGraw-Julio Franco-Wilson Betemit.

    Why?

Won’t he just be taking DH/1B at bats away from Butler, Kila, and Hosmer?

    Also

Monty, Lamb and Duffy. In fact, I bet Feliz is the only player they let play this year.

They said he's a good defensive corner infielder

But he can’t hit. Why not put Avilés at third until Moose comes up, and then move him to second? Why sign a washed-up player, even if it is a minor-league contract? He’ll never be good again.

Both of those situations sound about as good

as picking up a replacement player when the time comes. Yes, Getz is probably going to really suck. No, I can’t see why signing an old, bad player is going to help that situation.

Moustakas is going to be in ST

There have been rumblings of questions (or questions of rumblings) about Moose’s 3B defense, and his ability to play an MLB-quality 3B defensively. Feliz has been (until very recently) praised for his good 3B defense. They probably figure that Feliz can learn Moose a thing or two about playing the position. I’m sure that was part of the reason for the signing.

I still think the worst-case scenario is that Getz sucks or Aviles get injured, and Feliz makes the 25-man to be a defensive replacement for Betemit at 3rd. Even then, he may not even stick around all year once Moose gets the call.

I think he's could be like an old Rafael Belliard......

awful hitter, good late-innings defensive replacement. Not liking the fact he’s 36, but I can see the comp, sorta.

    I miss Marquis Grissom

He was one of my favorite Brewers.

I had an irrational love for Ellis Burks

I remember as a kid trading just about anyone to get my hands on Ellis Burks cards. I thought he was going to be a HOFer. I have no idea why.

I think that's the way I was with Grissom

In retrospect, he was barely even in Milwaukee, but I thought he was great for some reason. Him and Jeff Cirillo.

Yeah, but Grissom was a good MLBer.

IMO, anyone that can stick around MLB for 15+ years deserves at least a courtesy vote for the HOF.

Burks was a Very Good player

I read and wrote about him a little bit when Rocco Baldelli retired. He started out great, had some problems, then had a career revival at Coors. What’s interesting is that he kept hitting even after he left Colorado for less friendly run environments.

Yea, I just looked at his BBRef page

And I’m kinda amazed he was as good as he was. Lifetime .879 OPS! Of course, its interesting his power numbers are much better in his 30s than in his 20s, but that’s the goofy ball era for you.

I enjoyed his stint as a Brave. If GMDM invited him to spring training I wouldn’t be averse.

    That Bonds-Finley-Alou outfield

the Giants had in 2006 was awesome. M. Alou was the junior partner of that group at age 39.

To be fair, the Giants also had a relatively untried youngster who got more time in the outfield than any of those three — Randy Winn, age 32. So they weren’t totally adverse to youth. Relatively speaking, of course.

Conclusion: How Sabean kept his job long enough to win a title in San Francisco is one of the great mysteries of the universe.
