Poem of the Week: "Dublinesque" by Philip Larkin
This is an interesting poem set in Ireland by the supposedly quintessentially English poet, Philip Larkin. This poem appeared in the 1974 collection High Windows.
Dublinesque
Down stucco sidestreets,
Where light is pewter
And afternoon mist
Brings lights on in shops
Above race-guides and rosaries,
A funeral passes.
The hearse is ahead,
But after there follows
A troop of streetwalkers
In wide flowered hats,
Leg-of-mutton sleeves,
And ankle-length dresses.
There is an air of great friendliness,
As if they were honouring
One they were fond of;
Some caper a few steps,
Skirts held skilfully
(Someone claps time),
And of great sadness also.
As they wend away
A voice is heard singing
Of Kitty, or Katy,
As if the name meant once
All love, all beauty.

they fuck you up, your mum and dad
they may not mean to, but they do.

I'll assume that's also Philip Larkin

Now we're talking! I missed my poems of the week!!
What’s with the dark night of your soul, Will?
They'll Pass Quickly
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Middle 40's....still trying to wrestle with some of that shit
mantra: You don’t have to prove anything to anyone but yourself, not your parents, kids, wives, friends, etc….you come in and go out alone. Answer to yourself first. Everyone else can fuck off. In no way should that suggest not being aware of humankind or compassion for others. Answer to no one but yourself. And or fucks sake, don’t feel sorry for yourself. 99 times out of 100, there is some poor schlub down the block who has got it 1,000 times worse.
