Be careful when reading the Movies Died/Top Gun article

There is some interesting info about how the lack of creativity is caused by “safe” decisions and/or marketing, but the part about Top Gun at the center of this is incredibly short-sighted, misleading, illogical, and basically wrong. That coupled with the sensational and incorrect title is enough to make you question whether you believe anything else the article has to say.

    Yeah

And it’s a fairly long article too. I think the Top Gun choice was made simply so the author of the article could pay off the end <Spoiler Alert!> with a tidbit about how they are about to make Top Gun 2. It was a long way to go to get that mention in….

    Everything I've read about it

Makes believe it’s going to be absolutely horrible.

by Tito42 on Mar 7, 2011 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Even if it was better than the 1st one....

it would still be ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE…..and I’m not saying that in a Jim Rome kind of way. Although, as much as Rome or Quentin Tarantino like to think of themselves as insightful for pointing out the flaming homo eroticism in the movie….it was prominent in early reviews among the highbrows. GOOSE IS DEAD.

There are those who will say

Tim Burton’s Batman in ’89 sucked the creativity (sort of ironic seeing how creative Burton himself is) out of Hollywood by ushering in an era of bringing comic books to life on the silver screen using the Top Gun blueprint. Top Gun had an interesting vehicle for its admittedly clichéd storyline (naval aviation) and featured aerial cinematography we will never see again on film.

Personally, I think blaming the movies is an excuse. The last two movies I saw in the theatres were The Fighter and True Grit, because of their excellent acting performances. I’m squarely in the Top Gun demographic, but choose to spend my money on original, creative films. But at the same time, I enjoyed The A-Team and Expendables for nostalgia and an adrenaline fix. Not every movie has to be Oscar worthy, or those great films wouldn’t stand out as much.

by Tito42 on Mar 7, 2011 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I'm about the only person I know that wasn't very impressed with The Fighter,

it was ok but nowhere near as good as I was expecting based on the hype and word of mouth.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Anything with Marky Mark in the lead role

Is going to underwhelm IMO from an overall standpoint. For me, the individual acting performances in the supporting roles were worth the price of admission. And Wahlberg didn’t screw it up, he just kind of kept his mouth shut and stayed inbounds. It worked for me.

    Bianchi

Anybody besides me starting to get more excited about Bianchi possibly beign a bigger part of the future?

    Really? No, not really.

by johnny4 on Mar 7, 2011 2:41 PM EST reply actions

I was pretty excited about him this time last year. He had a really good 2009 in the minors, was a threat to make the big club out of spring training…then got injured. He’s always had ability, but always been hurt. I don’t think he was really part of the organization’s plans going forward, I kind of keep forgetting he’s around.

    Let's just trust the process.

by trusttheprocess on Mar 7, 2011 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

I like Bianchi better then any of our other middle infield prospects.

Saying that he will never be healthy and not take into consideration what the injuries were and so on is pretty lame way to evaluate him.

did you see the play he made on a ball up the middle the other?

    Really? No, not really.

I just bought tickets for Royals at Cardinals in June. The tickets in St. Louis are super expensive. $95.50 for two tickets in the upper level of the upper deck. I paid $50 for the same seats in Minneapolis. Then again, there is a BEST FANS IN BASEBALL service charge.

Or does only one of the games count?

What games don’t count – only exhibitions against non-major league teams?

    In-between game chatter

    meanwhile in Libya

Al Jazeera said sources from the rebel interim council told its correspondent in Benghazi that the offer was rejected because it would have amounted to an “honorable” exit for Gaddafi and would offend his victims.

Al Jazeera said Gaddafi wanted guarantees of personal safety for him and his family and a pledge that they not be put on trial. It said that Gaddafi had sent former prime minister Jadallah Azzouz Talhi to meet the rebels and offer to hold a meeting of the General People’s Congress to work out the details of such a deal.

The offer aimed at having Gaddafi hand over power to a committee formed by the General People’s Congress, the television said.

In other words, how to negotiate in a fashion where you concede nothing and you piss off the other side even more.

On Sunday morning, Gaddafi media claimed to have retaken Zawiya (nope, still massacring people there), Misrata (nope, not making progress there), Ras Lanuf (not on Sunday, they tried moving that way today), and Tobruk (didn’t even fight there). Which led to a staged celebration. Meanwhile they insist the machine gun sounds were fireworks. Fireworks. At 6am. Some think the machine gun fire was infighting at their HQ.

We’ve gotta transition for the post-Gaddafi world. Because he’s probably going to be a lot less amusing when people figure out how many people he killed in the last 3 weeks.

this sounds even more fun than the usual military

because you get to ride around in a Hilux all day long

there’s a small market on stories of the stuff they’re using to fight. Someone used a hunting knife on a Gaddafi tank driver. Someone is bringing a BBQ skewer along.

    Then there’s this from Benghazi

“#Benghazi live; They are going to kill and burn Gaddafi and throw his ashes in the air #Febr17 He will not be allowed to leave #Libya”

I don’t think there’s middle ground between “let me leave with all my money and no trials” and “We will set you on fire”

    Hey Will

Read that article about nuclear retaliation. I’m not sure I understand how someone cannot see the point to retaliation. However, it was a great article, and there’s a well-educated albeit crazy anti-semitic Muslim on the comments that really gets things going.

I would not intentionally retaliate against the civilian population

of, say, Iran or North Korea, if their crazy governments use a nuclear weapon on somebody. I would, however, wipe out all their military capacity with everything I had, and then invade and occupy the place. And if some civilians get hurt, well, war is a terrible thing, and a whole bunch of civilians on our side just got hurt.

The premise of this article is that Israel has been wiped out and the subs are on their own

They don’t have any communication with their military leadership and don’t know (maybe nobody knows) where the nuclear attack came from.

The defense of this theory seems to be that Iran and Pakistan will never let their nukes go to terrorists if they know that they’ll get nuked if ever Israel does, but it seems to me that what’s left of Israel is going to look a lot less sympathetic if their subs follow up one nuclear attack by launching a couple hundred nukes at Iran and Pakistan — especially if it turns out that the nuke used in the attack on Israel came from, say, the old Soviet stockpile.

There is going to be a nuclear war, of a sort, within the next 15 years — and it will only be a “skirmish” — and will set a precedent that nuclear weapons can be used strategically within a non-all-out tactical battle plan — and that’s when we’re really doomed.

He was 22 last year and put up a decent OBP at age 22 at AA…..not an amazing prospect…but already dismissing him? WAYYYYYY too early for that. If he can play good D and steal some bases….he can be a .270/.330/.360 hitter and still have some decent value as a starter…DRob has a chance to do that. This guy still has potential.

When Dyson was 22, he was putting up a .605 OPS in A ball.

Robinson at 22, .725 OPS in AA. Robinson had and has MUCH more upside than Dyson..and is MUCH more likely to turn into a servicable major leaguer. Dyson can play D and run, but I’d say is almost a lock to be worthless with the bat. DRob can run and play D too…but has a decent chance to be a good enough hitter for a CF at the major league level.

    DRob >>>>> Dyson

Eh, they're both Tom Goodwin all over again

he, Blanco and Dyson all scream pinch runner/defensive replacement anyway. I think their offense will probably best be determined by which one can either bunt their way on base or squib something into the outfield.

by Cap Midnight on Mar 7, 2011 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

Gregor Blanco is already a far superior hitter than Dyson will ever be. DRob has potential to be an even better hitter.

Dyson has no chance to ever be any kind of hitter. Blanco and DRob can potentially be solid bats in CF. Just b/c they are all fast with little power doesn’t mean they are the same player. The numbers clearly show Dyson as being a much worse player

I think you are getting a bit too excited by DRob's hitting ability

that was one season with a decent OBP in a loaded lineup. Look at Gathright’s numbers they piss on DRobs

They are all pinch runner/defense guys......

I’m not moved by any of their overall numbers. It’s like the OF equivalent of Rafael Belliard.

by Cap Midnight on Mar 7, 2011 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think DRob is going to be a great hitter, I think he can be a 270/.330/.360 hitter.

Far from great, as I said…just much much better than Dyson can do, that’s all. Sure, it was only one good season…but it was at AA as a 22 year old. Not old for the league and was his first look at that level.

..and Gathright was a pretty solid prospect with those numbers…and rightly so. Prospects don’t always work out, I’m not guaranteeing anything with Robinson..just saying his potential is clearly much better than Dyson’s.

I think you are misplaying Dyson and DRob in my opinion. DRob might be a slightly better hitter

but Dyson is the superior defender and better baserunner. DRob been playin for a while now and is still raw just don’t see him ever gettin it together.

Obviously I have no idea exactly how good Dyson or DRob are on defense.....

…but DRob just had his best season by far at age 22 at AA. Saying he’s raw and won’t ever get it together is a really, really hasty judgement.

Also...DRob's age 22 season was far better than Dyson's age 24 season at the exact same ballpark...

I don’t understand how that equates to Drob “might be a slightly better hitter.” It seems to me Drob is the far, far superior hitter to Dyson.

It's one season and a guy with his speed who continually gets picked off is still raw.

I love his speed but Dyson uses his much much better. A .340+ OBP doesn’t mean much when you get picked off continually.

I got no problem saying Dyson is a better baserunner and probably a better fielder....

but come on, the bats aren’t even close. Again..I ain’t saying DRob is great…but Dyson can simply never be anything other than defensive sub and pinch runner. DRob at least has a chance to be more.

There isn't the seperation you seem to think there is.

Look at DRobs #’s and he played half his home games in what we all describe as a nice hitting environment last season.

Dyson played at the exact same park last year, at age 24, and put up much worse numbers.

How is that not clear seperation? Better BA, better OBP and a much better SLG at two years younger in the exact same park.

Agreed but he finds himself in a logjam in CF now with

Dyson and Cain and they prefer Dyson’s defense. Be interesting to see if they have him repeat AA in favor of Dyson in AAA.

I think DRob should start in AA, I am by no means advocating Robinson ahead of Dyson on the CF depth chart right this minute....

but in the long run, Dyson has no chance to be a starter…..Robinson could turn into one.

Had to look him up on baseball reference.....

I think one thing that seems to be clear about this spring so far is that the Royals have gotten HRs from some weird sources.

Every time I check the score

we have more runs. Lot of small ball? Anything exciting? I can’t get anything from MLB/ESPN.
