Kansas City Royals Best Mariners Again, Go For Sweep Tomorrow
10-4. The Royals are 10-4. 10-4. Wow. With today's win the pressure remains on Cleveland, the other juggernaut challenging the Royals for AL Central supremacy. The Royals go for the Grass Creek sweep tomorrow. Special.
All series we've wondered, "are the Royals starters pitching well, or is this just what every Mariner game is like?"
Well, today Sean O`Sullivan pitched five shutout innings, scattering six hits and two walks, mixing in four strikeouts. O`Sullivan has been so bad this season that his ERA is still 5.00. The Mariners had some things going on in the middle and bottom of the order, but Ichiro & Figgins today went 0-10.
Because today is a day of the week ending in the word "day", Tim Collins pitched an inning, adding three more strikeouts to his season tally. His rookie cohort, Aaron Crow, somewhat pointlessly worked the ninth inning. If we can't have a lower-quality reliever pitch the ninth in a 7-0 game, it'll never happen. But alas. I loved Yost's use of the 'pen a week into the season, now I wonder if he's riding Crow & Collins too hard.
Alex Gordon & Mike Aviles had nice games today, though Kila couldn't complete the triumvirate of anti-Moore players contributing. There's always tomorrow. Your move, Cleveland.

I think it's a little early to worry. But if he continues to struggle by June....
maybe we should start looking at transitioning him into a starter, and award the Closer’s position to Jeffress.
But I’d be more in favor of a Closer by committee from the time that Soria becomes no longer trustworthy, and letting Ned just choose the hot arm between Collins, Crow, Jeffress, and Soria.
I have about equal confidence in those 4 right now to come in and get a save.
"Here's to feeling good all the time." ~Cosmo Kramer
Just from June on in 2011. Name the next starter before the 2012 season, if not Soria.
I must admit, Jeffress appears to be our future starter. He’s just got that intimidation factor with his heat and when he commands the other couple of pitches he’s got consistently, there’s no way we shouldn’t take a hard look at replacing Soria with Jeffress.
Can Soria make the transition to starter? Or can we get good value for him in a trade? Those are really my two biggest questions.

but that's because he's been conditioned for 1 inning appearances
to maximize his effectiveness for one inning of work. If they made him a starter, they would gradually work him up in terms of his pitch count with each appearance in spring, until he’s comfortable going 5 or 6 innings. And then, presto, you have yourself a starter.

totally disagree on use of Collins & Crow
one inning 3-4x/week is not too much … maybe too many people these days are too young to remember the Orioles when they had THE best rotation in baseball (as good as the current Phillies starters) … Palmer, Cuellar, McNally, Dobson … omg, THE best ever … and all 20 game winners in 71
every 4 days, and they all went 7-8 routinely, almost every time … often complete games …
our pen guys toss 20 or so pithces … what, you think arms will fall off?

but the problem is that Collins hasn’t come of age as a pitcher in that environment
there’s just no comparison to teh state of a guy’s arm as a stretched out starter than a current era reliever
one last thing, there’s a bit of a selection/survivor’s bias here. we remember the guys who survived that era, not the hundreds of guys who burned out their arms and disapeared from memory

I'm not worried about the pen
I have a ton of confidence in Tim, Crow, Jeffress, and Soria
I am concerned with the way Yost is using them.
A 7-0 game is perfect for Wood/Teixera/ or Adcock to have an inning.
We many need those guys tomorrow.

Sometimes it irks me how managers baby the pitchers arms. 2 innings is considered
a big chunk for a reliever and letting a pitcher complete a 9 inning game, is now a rarity. Just to illusatrate how much the game has changed….
In 1879, for the Cincinnati Reds, a 5’9" 175lb right hander, by the name of Will White, started 75 games and threw all 9 innings of 75 starts, (75 complete games in one season) en route to a 43-31 record for the season in which he pitched 680 innings, and he was a 24 yo white kid with round spectacles.
I’m not concerned about an extra inning here and there for these young athletes.

I'm pretty sure these players you are referring to didn't throw 90+ MPH heat
I could throw a ball 200 times a day every day and my arm wouldn’t fall off either. I’d also be pitching at about 50 MPH.
Not to mention.
That baseballs that were hit didn’t travel as far back in the 1800s. That was when the moon was still made of cheese, thus the gravitational force didn’t carry the ball as far.
Also, everything was black and white, so it was a lot harder to see the ball against the background. Pitchers didn’t need to throw as hard.

How much the game has changed
If you’re trying to illustrate that the game has changed a lot since 1879, I think your example works well
If you’re trying to illustrate that managers misuse their pitchers today, I don’t think it works — precisely because the game has changed so much since 1879.
"I think a tactical error might have been committed by the manager of the Royals"
the game has indeed changed, but arms are pretty much what they were 130 years ago
the mechanics and physics of throwing are the same, too … point being: toss 20-30 pitches every day or so and the arm stays attached, no worries

I'm pretty sure that the pitches thrown today were not thrown 130 years ago
Since the mechanics (and the stresses) differ by pitch, it’s not fair to say the mechanics are the same as 130 years ago.
More importantly, hitters are much better now than they were 130 years ago, so the pitchers are forced to work harder on each pitch to avoid quality contact. It’s much harder on the body to throw 90 pitches at around 95% of max output than 90 pitches at 75%, even if the mechanics and the physics were the same today as 130 years ago.
"I think a tactical error might have been committed by the manager of the Royals"
Not to mention countless other things
mound height, eligible race of athlete, weights and conditioning, # of pitches seen per at bat, etc
I would never have expected someone to back up their macho bullpen usage argument with stats from the 1870’s, even on the official facebook page. This comment was impressive in its own special way.

Yea, nobody should worry.
All those rookies are having a blast getting a chance to possibly throw everyday.
Just wish we could have Coleman up because i think he would be in the discussion with Collins,Crow, and Jeffress. Kind of impatient for him to get here.
Crow in the 9th
seems to have passed his audition for temporary closer. Using him there suggests that Soria’s ineffectiveness may be more than mechanical or bad luck.
Perhaps,
or it could suggest Collins and Jeffress as set-up men for Crow in the current situation, the new 8th and 9th inning trinity, with Tex, Adcock, and Wood as the middle guys. Crow should be able to come back easily tomorrow, Jeffress after two innings and Collins after a lot of pitches fanning the side not as likely. The difference among the three seems to be pitch count per inning so far.

Will be honest
You’re just questioning Yost’s bullpen decisions because he didn’t pitch Adcock, who would have probably given up a run and made the final 7-1, just as you predicted. Yost’s insistence on using the young guns prevented you from being right, that’s all it is..
...
Not sure how to take this. It seems to me that if you have a reliever for garbage time that you took in the Rule 5, you probably ought to use him when you can. The Royals have had a lot of close games. This was not close. the shutout was not important. You Adcock and you like it.

It looks like the pitcher...
hits him in the head with the ball. I didn’t see the actual play…what did happen?
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I don't agree.
He’s definitely falling back and to the left. That implies someone throwing a ball at him…probably from the grassy knoll.

lol. Aviles does something terrible for each and every single thing he does right.

The #Royals defeated the #Mariners 7-0 today, making them 10-4 this year – their best start thru 14 games since they were 11-3 in 2003.
Granted, the 2003 Royals took 20 games to lose their 4th (getting to 16-3 before losing their 4th in Toronto)
And the 2003 Royals through 30 were 20-9 (much better than 18-11)

What the fuck
will Dayton do if this club is in contention this fall? I worry he will panic and trade legit prospects for some douchbag, hack mercenary who has grit and presence.
Please tell me Im off.
Nobody knows
and it still seems unlikely. However, it would be fun to find out.
i'm actually not that worried
the prospects are “his guys” now
we’re also still two months from this being an issue

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I don't actually think this team has a chance to contend..
And if we get into August in contention then start to struggle, then I fear the knee jerk moves that are made out of desperation.

I don’t think we’ll contend all year, either … then too, would be nice to see the team over-achieve for a change, instead of under-achieve as per usual

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I think it was a HUGE coup getting Zorn though
The team 100% depends on Cassel, and there aren’t many guys who are better QB coaches than Zorn.
I honestly think the team will be better too, and I think its also possible that the division could be won at 8-8.

I hear ya, gats ... I think Yost is doing a terrific job, and Clint Hurdle with our batters is working ... oh wait, wrong year
I meant to say that I would have love DeBerg as QB coach, but Zorn could be just as effective … guess we shall see, but I highly doubt can’t even imagine 8-8 winning anything
then too, there was the NFL Worst West in 2010 so yeah …

I'm not worried either...
but I also expect him to make a bad trade using good prospects for a “hack mercenary.” Though, I think he’ll only do it once. We can survive that.

are any of the Giles still in baseball?

Im a selfish bastard
I want to see Montgomery in KC now. I see that one move keeping KC in contention a while longer. I dont like gaming service time w/pitchers. Their health is too fragile.
itd still be dumb to do it 5 days before the deadline for keeping him another year....
which is where we’re at now

Rotation
Hochevar
Francis
Chen
Montgomery
Duffy
Me thinks replacing Davies and SOS (todays fluke aside) would make this rotaion, dare I say, legitimate. More interesting, anyway.
Do you know anyone following Omaha?
I bet Duffy, like Monty and probably Mooooose, is working on something in particular, like Crow was last year in A, that gets him rocked for awhile. that is what the minors are for, to perfect the curve or the change, to take an outside pitch the opposite way. Haven’t seen anything from the prospects writers to support that, yet. Otherwise, we can just start chanting “Bust!” and go back to being last year’s Royals’ fans. Prospects suck, GMDM is a failure, David Glass is a lousy owner. 18-11.
by Jim Fetterolf on Apr 16, 2011 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
My guess is to doubt that he's working on something...
otherwise, he would have been doing it last year. Unless he was taking last year just to get back in shape from taking that time off.
I don’t really see Duffy being anything other than a back-of-the-order starter or a good reliever. However, that’s not a bad thing.

Funny
For the first time in a long time (and until the inevitable return of that dickweed Kendall), the Royals dont have any of their patented “worst players in baseball” types. The Elartons, the Kendalls, TPJ, Yuni…….makes this team a heck lot more likable.
And theyre even playing better. Imagine that.
