Melky's holding down the 2 spot

check his splits by which side of the plate he bats on… hint: he shouldn’t be hitting 2nd as a RH batter

Most "Amazing Facts"

fall well short of amazing. Not this one, though. Impressive.

Cabbie Obviously Needs

Many more plate appearances to get that 4th walk. In the meantime, Jarry-D will have plenty of late inning PR appearances when we’re down by 4+.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

In other news

Cain, Lough and Hosmer beat up on Zack Grienke. Somehow, I find this elegant and satisfying.

Melky's best career OBP season was 2006...

…when he had a .360 on base. He is now on a team which espouses “aggressiveness” and that’s probably why he is hitting the ball with authority down the lines and has 7 doubles to date.

He should be further down in the lineup batting RH right now because his right side is really cold and the pressure to do something in the 2-spot is compounding that issue. His BABIP on that side is at .215 so career wise he should see a jump of .050 or so (.266 is career BABIP from that side).

OTOH, he’s .345/,371/.500 from left, where he’s rocketing LDs, although the BABIP is at a .408 clip and likely will come down (career .303).

The point is, he’s aggressive to begin with, and from what I’ve read Seitzer encourages this and wants more slugging from him so he’s even less likely to walk.

SImple: bat him lower in the order as was suggested vs. LHP and leave him be in 2-spot vs. RHP. He looks especially out of whack on the right side, but that will straighten out some, since his mechanics on that side are generally much sounder than this early season has shown.

That's a good question - you're options are only

Aviles
Betemit
Butler
Frenchy

But Aviles is the best option to lead off against LHP, and I don’t see taking Butler out of the cleanup spot, so that leaves Frenchy and Betemit. Neither is a great candidate, but I’ve seen worse (and not just you-know-who). I mean, it’s not, say, Bloomquist.

I don't think he will be.

But, it also wouldn’t surprise me to see some dumbass extension either.

I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

no.

And in this sense, none of this matters all that much.

I would have had my doubts

but Moore’s handling of Podzilla and Dick have me confident that his stay here is limited.
