Just had long conversation with scout. Likes most KC prospects, but not sold on Moustakas. "Reminds me of Shea Hillenbrand with more power."

If you can't trust the judgment of an anonymous scout, who can you trust?
Just for the record, the “ship is sinking” quote is the only reason I posted this.
Although, to be fair, the comparison isn’t that far off: Hillenbrand was a guy who didn’t K much, didn’t take many walks, and had “questions” about his defense all along.

just to make sure...
I’m not saying Moose = Hillenbrand, just that that comparison makes more sense than some others (e.g., Brandon Wood) that I’ve seen.

Moustakas has an odd profile
relatively low strikeouts, low walks, decent but not great hitter for average, plus power – the best I can come up with is a left-handed Adrian Beltre with a little more power but without the defense – which I suppose would be both good and disappointing at the same time. Or for a less optimistic one, how about a left-handed Joe Crede without the defense?
yeah...im gonna guess that 90% of the people
even here dont get the ship is sinking quote

I'll take it.
In a second. Depending on what “more” means, I guess. Shea Hillenbrand with much more power is a valuable player. And given the failure rate of prospects, if I could sign for shea Hillenbrand plus 100 pts of slugging I do it post haste. Is it ideal? No. But prospects rarely become the ideal.
Bottom line: if shea Hillenbrand + more power is moustakas’s floor, that’s a very good thing.

On Fangraphs, even Hillenbrand's actual performance wouldn't be a terrible floor for Moose
If you take out the 2007 season where he fell off a cliff (-1.6 WAR in 73 games, wow), he was at 6 WAR over 6 seasons. Not ideal, but not a catastrophe, either. Like you say, add in a little power and hopefully slightly better defense, and you come up with an average-ish player, maybe more.

Of his six "non-disaster" seasons
Hillenbrand was average-ish for two of them. He had his uses, although he was almost as bad as Betemit at third, never took a walk, and was by most accounts a real jerk, but that would be extremely disappointing for one of the top 10 prospects in baseball.

it's going to be interesting to see how
fans react to the inevitable slow start that a Moustakas could get off to in KC. I just don’t believe the same fans who buried Alex Gordon quickly are incapable of doing that to Mike Moustakas too.
There’s a weirdly toxic atmosphere here because the 70s/80s Royals were a far different team than anything that can be done now, so if things aren’t done how they were done in 1977, then some people are going to be real unhappy

Why would that be disappointing?
That would put him around average for a top 10 prospect right?
Go Royals!
hold up...
Shea Hillenbrand would be disappointing but not “extremely” disappointing. (Brandon Wood would be “extremely disappointing”…) Shea Hillenbrand with more power would not be disappointing. It would probably be a median-type outcome (if not, better). Again, if this is the worst scouting opinion we can find, this is a good thing.
I’ll just ignore the “jerk” data point. I’m guessing it was sarcastic, but I honestly can’t tell anymore.

Sure he was
Just don’t know why this fact was included in a list of his faults when the discussion was about a comparison with Moustakas. I’m assuming it was like double sarcasm because of the cynicism with which some people here regard stories of Moose’s leadership skills (olive garden. Math homework.) and clubhouse chemistry in general.
Whatever. Hillenbrand went deep twice tonight, but alas, no walks.

We saw this same BS when Gordon started struggling
Not that Moustakas may not have any faults, and not that some scouts may have been a little too optimistic last year, but this is akin to playing Monday Morning QB.
This is why I distrust scouts in general. Yes, scouting is hugely relevant. A good scout can tell us things that would be incredibly difficult and time-consuming to quantify with numbers (bat speed, power potential, pitching mechanics), but it can also be some of the biggest cop-out bullcrap in the game. Either Moose had the tools to succeed at the MLB or he did not. If it turns out he does not, then a lot of scouts flat-out misinterpreted his ability.
An exception might be a dramatic shift in the way Mike plays the game, but we have heard no such rumblings. There were definite red-flag in Moustakas’ game last year, especially concerning his plate discipline, but scouts should not come out of the woodwork to point those out only when things start going south (and, to be fair, some did point out Moose’s flaws last year). To make it clear, I am not complaining about this scout in particular (who knows what he thought of Moustakas before?), but of the scouting community in general. It seems often that scouts are influenced by what kind of numbers a player is putting up which, to me, shows very little integrity.
On the brighter side, Omaha’s top prospects (especially Moustakas) cleaned up tonight.

I think this ties in with what Will was saying in his post about Escobar's defense.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Which isn’t bad to have, but I don’t think Moose is going to be making All-Stars like some think.

Out of it for a few days
I guess there was some confusion, as I expected… But just for a note, if 100 more points of SLG than Shea HIllenbrand" wouldn’t be “Shea HIllenbrand” anymore, it would be one of the top power hitters in baseball (about .540 SLG), so I"m not sure the scout was envisioning that much power, or he wouldn’t have been negative, as Rany implies. NOt that I’m endorsing either view.
Having said that, there’s a difference between “better than Shea Hillenbrand” and ‘Shea Hillenbrand." Shea Hillenbrand, well, he sucked. Sorry. He was okay for two seasons, but for most of his career his was a bench player who got played too much. If Moose gives KC two average seasons and flames out, that’s a disappointment for one of the top 10 prospects in baseball.
