Translating the Location of the Royals Within the MLB Season

The Royals have played four baseball games. This is 2.4% of their season. So far, it has been a very thrilling 2.4% of their season, but 2.4% nonetheless.

How can we better understand 2.4%?

  • 2.4% of the NFL season puts you in the second quarter of the first game, nearing halftime
  • 2.4% of the NBA season puts you in the fourth quarter of the second game, nearing the buzzer.
  • 2.4% of the Masters puts you on the second hole, somewhere in the fairway.
  • 2.4% of the NCAA Tournament (starting with the Thursday games) puts you at halftime of the second game of the entire tournament played.
  • 2.4% of the 72 years lifespan puts you as a toddler, three months from birthday number 2.

Star-divide

  • 2.4% of the history of the United States puts you in 1781.
  • 2.4% of the calender year puts you on January 8th.
  • 2.4% of a four year stint in college puts you in early October of your freshman year.
  • So needless to say, it is in fact early. However, some of these seem farther along than others. Here's another: the United States is 3.794 million square miles. 2.4% of that landmass gives you 91,000 square miles: which is slightly smaller than the state of Wyoming. That's right, Grass Creek! The Royals have already conquered the Equality State and are moving on!

it's early but still ... a nice start, better than some/many/most of us figured

I love that the team battles and battles and battles … playing hard and that’s a good thing … love that Yost has them running (6 SB’s today alone) and that rocks … love that Collins had 5k’s in 2 innings, love that Frenchie almost looks like a real Major Leaguer

    it’s like a movie … surrealism incarnate

    gotta love it

I'm not going overboard with it

But it sure looks like this team can win more games than last year. And they’re only going to get better and more fun to watch (with the exception of the return of HWSNBN) as the season goes on. By the end of the season, we could see LoCain replace Melky, Moose replace Betemit, Crow to the rotation, the debut of one or two of the big lefties… and we’ll hopefully be adding even more pieces by trading the vets.

    How does this look?

    1. Cain
    2. Aviles
    3. Gordon
    4. Butler
    5. Moustakas
    6. Ka’aihue
    7. Francouer

    9. Escobar

    4. Ka’aihue
    5. Moustakas
    6. Gordon
    7. Francouer
    8. Pena
    9. Escobar

And no, I’m not a Gordon hater I just prefer him in the 6 hole and I would like Butler getting a guaranteed AB in the 1st inning every game. If Gordon batted 5th and Mous 6th I would be fine with it as well.

    No, wait

I’d rather drop Avilés to the 6 spot and move everyone else up one. Billy in the two hole. You want your best hitters, supposedly in this order: 1, 2, 4, 3, 5, 6, …, so if you were to do it that way, you could move Gordon to the three spot.

    We’d have:

    1. Cain
    2. Butler
    3. Gordon
    4. Kila
    5. Moose
    6. Avilés
    7. Frenchy
    8. Peña
    9. Escobar

Aviles usually has like a .330 OBP.

Cain posted a .343 obp in his short stint last year so i see him at least being able to produce a .330 obp and not a sub .320 obp. His speed is also a factor and that we just don’t have anyone else to hit there lol.

My line up around june or whatever

    CF-Cain
    2B-Aviles
    LF-Gordon
    DH-Butler
    1B-Kila
    RF-Frenchy
3B- Moustakas(think we should ease him in lower in the lineup)
    C-Treanor
    SS-Escobar

    Pena,Getz,Betemit, Cabrera on the bench.

by vic1124 on Apr 4, 2011 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

    Cain and Aviles

Aviles’ OBP is heavily batting-average dependent, and he really projects as below .320 overall.

You know how Escobar was incredibly lucky on batted balls last season? Well, in Cain’s brief major league stint, he was just as lucky. Once you translate his minor league numbers, his overall likely OBP is below .320.

Now, once could make an argument for one of those guys leading off against lefties, given standard platoon splits. Indeed, teams should (but don’t) use different batting orders vs. LHP and RHP. However, that also means that neither should be leading off against RHP… we’re talking a .300 OBP or lower in those situations.

    Trading Deadline,

    I think:
    CF-Cain
    LF-Gordon (he’s got a little speed)
    DH-Butler (3 hole hitter)
    1B-Da Kila
RF-Frenchy (because I don’t think we can trade him)
3B-Moustakas (looked good Saturday, good arm, good reflexes)
C- Treanor (he’s earned some respect, saved two games at the plate, won the third with the bat. Kendall is history, IR, then released)
2B-Getz (defense and timely hitting. Looked sharp Saturday)
    SS-Escobar
SP-Monty, Francis, Crow, Duffy, Hoch (Davies to the pen, SOS and Maz sent down, probably Jeffress, who is looking like the Farns)
I expect Melkie to be traded, as well as Aviles, Chen, and maybe Francis. If Hosmer is lighting up lefties in Omaha, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Butler traded for a batch of prospects, especially if Kila performs as expected.

by Jim Fetterolf on Apr 4, 2011 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

I would much rather have us trade Kila than Billy

Billy’s younger, for one. For another, we already have him locked up with a very reasonable contract for the next several years. I also think he’s a better overall hitter than Kila.

I don’t think too highly of Getz. He’s been useful so far this year, but over 162 games, his average to slightly above average glove isn’t going to salvage his anemic bat. Speed is really his only plus tool, but it’s not too useful if he can’t hit or walk to get onto the basepaths. I don’t know who will eventually replace him, but I have high hopes for Christian Colon or Johnny Giovatella. If all else fails, I don’t think Aviles will kill us defensively at 2nd.

I kinda like the idea of Gordon hitting 2nd, especially considering his OBP skills, but Francouer should be relegated to #6 or lower in the lineup. He may have power, but he doesn’t make enough contact for it to be dangerous, and he has no patience at all. And though he may be the MVP of this series, there’s no way Traenor keeps this up for long. You and I and everyone else here at RR know that Kendall is done, but the only two people that matter, Yost and Moore, think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. He’ll be playing as soon as possible, and likely hitting high up in the order for some reason. I’d rather see some combination of Pena, Pina, May, and Treanor handle the catching duties, but sadly I think we’re going to see Kendall catching 60-70 games in a row this season too. Because when you have a .200/.280/.270 hitter with mediocre defense and below average speed on the team, you need to maximize his opportunities.

by Soria's Unibrow on Apr 4, 2011 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

    Billy will not be traded

He’s signed to a very team-friendly contract and he is going to get even better.

I sure hope you’re right about Voldemort. The odds are 3-1 that Chen gets DFAed after ten starts. I also hope we can trade Melky and Frenchy for something. Avilés will be fine at second base; I like him. If Francis pitches well through the All-Star break, he should definitely be traded, or offered an extension. I would prefer that we not bring up Montgomery, Duffy, or Hosmer this season unless they absolutely blow away Triple-A and prove they have no more to learn there.

I had the Royals at 68 wins; my forecast has improved to 70.

Which, keep in mind, also increases his trade value. But I agree with you, I do not see them trading him. With Greinke and DeJesus now gone, Billy IS the face of this franchise for the casual fan. And the casual fan is the most important in they eyes of ownership/management in my opinion. Dedicated, loyal, diehard fans are going to spend their time going to or watching the games no matter what but the casual fan is the one they have to try and turn into the diehard fan. And if they traded Butler this year, I think they would lose more casual fans regardless of what they got in return.

by hagarwood on Apr 4, 2011 4:49 AM EDT reply actions

I was at the game Saturday and noticed two things; first, that Kila is quicker and a better 1B than butler, and second, that I can probably outrun Butler and I’m 59 years old. He’s a career DH with average to low power, but will one day win a batting title and has a friendly contract, so should bring a good haul of prospects in return, much better than Kila would. With Hosmer and Clint Robinson both at AAA, flipping Butler eases a log jam without hurting the team.

On Getz, I like his glove, like his arm, like his speed, and like his plate discipline and hustle. If he gets replaced at 2nd, I see it being Giavotella doing it and Aviles getting traded, again for a couple of prospects, and Getz kept on the bench. Aviles is old and won’t be part of ’11, so trade him now.

I put Frenchy at the 5 spot just to break up the lefties. If he and Gordon play true to form, I see them platooning in the second half with Cain and maybe Lough in the outfield.

Treanor may not continue to hit, but his defense keeps him over Kendall, who, for all the grit and leadership, would have dropped at least one ball on the plays at the plate and would have had two passed balls Saturday. From what I saw, Treanor is a plus backstop.

“I would prefer that we not bring up Montgomery, Duffy, or Hosmer this season unless they absolutely blow away Triple-A and prove they have no more to learn there.”

I would have brought up Montgomery after Saturday’s game, he is impressive. Steve Carlton comes to mind. My thought on the rotation is that Hoch and Davies are good five inning pitchers, so Hoch to the back of the rotation and Davies trades places with Crow after a month to take advantage of Davies’ abilities one time through the order and to see what Crow has, besides a 97mph heater that made Torii Hunter look like a little leaguer. Hoch is basically a four or five slot starter at this point and moving him back takes the pressure off. I think Chen gets traded and Francis may, unless they are in first place and he has eight wins. Also a possibility that he has shoulder trouble. Hosmer is something else, if he dominates lefties at Omaha I bring him up with Moustakas at the break, maybe bring Giavotella with them if Getz isn’t hitting, and definitely Cain if he is performing. I told some folks that Saturday’s futures game looked like the 2013 Royals having an intrasquad game. The future is starting now, I see a steady transition to 2011 over this year and the August squad looking a lot like opening day, 2011.

by Jim Fetterolf on Apr 4, 2011 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

    Um...

I disagree with a ton of this, but you do know that this is already 2011?

It would be a criminal act to promote Hosmer unless we traded Butler for Mike Trout or Dominic Brown or some crazt shit like that. Maybe a cup of coffee in September, but no way we torch a year of his clock by being reactionary about a good weekend. Same goes for the pitchers. Most of whom haven’t pitched a single game above AA.

I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

by mitchfreakingmaier! on Apr 4, 2011 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

    It Is 2011

which is why I treat it this way. If the futures dominate in AAA, start moving them up and getting them experienced for 2012 (above a typo). I don’t think the ‘clock’ is as important as putting a winning team on the field and getting what we hope to be future stars the major league challenge and a chance to become a team rather than a collection of prospects. Team will have control for plenty of years of very low payroll, so should have time and money to keep the best of them.

As for Trout or Brown, if Butler actually had more tools than just a bat, there would be no need to even think about trading him and I doubt anyone gives up Trout for a slow, pudgy DH. I’m thinking more in terms of four A or high A players so we can start reloading Arkansas next year. Assuming Kila performs as expected and Hosmer comes up either this year or next, Butler is the low man on a crowded totem pole.

by Jim Fetterolf on Apr 4, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

If, and that's a BIG IF, Billy gets traded....

I would feel pretty confident that it would not be for four A or high A players. Just like the Greinke deal, you would have to get a couple guys that are capable of or very close to contributing right away. Maybe 2 guys at the high A level but you would have to get somebody ready to contribute to go with them. I understand your logic with reloading Arkansas next year but that would be too much of a risk imo.

by JSouth on Apr 4, 2011 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

    Right.

I was kidding about Trout or Brown. Those guys are going nowhere anytime soon. All I meant was how insane a deal would have to be to promote Hosmer that soon. Let him season in Omaha for a bit. I know 25+ years is a long time to be patient, but that’s the right thing to do, not getting excited about Melky Cabrera’s 1-2 year rental deal and decent weekend. If he has a .385 obp in June and we’re in first by 6 games, then this is an issue. Looking to trade a guy like Butler would have to be to fill potential holes in the 12-13 superwave rosters, and maybe getting a prospect or two in addition. Soria probably makes more sense than Butler as far as a trade goes. I want this team to win right now too, but this rotation isn’t going to do that, and none of the real stud pitchers have thrown a pitch in Omaha yet. I’m not trying to be a downer, just being realistic. I was just as excited after the game as anyone yesterday.

I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

    I wonder...

Do rookies in the bullpen have an advantage early in the season because no one has seen them? I believe that the bullpen will be much much better this year because it has better pitchers but I’d have to think that it’s an advantage to have half of your bullpen with very thin scouting reports.

I thought that Collins was just nasty yesterday.

He’s deceiving, his fastball jumps, and his offspeed stuff was really effective.

Can we send Farnsy and Dick Ankiel a thank you card yet?

I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

They also have an advantage of facing the Angels lineup

half of which is old, the other half of which sucks.

    My answer would be...

yes, it is an advantage early in the season for the rookies in the bullpen. Just like ST, the pitchers always seem to have the advantage early on because the hitters don’t have their timing down yet and have often times not seen a good scouting report on the pitcher’s they are facing. Obviously this does not mean that one or all of these rookies won’t continue to succeed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Crow/Collins/etc…don’t start getting hit a little more as the weeks go on. Big league hitters are there for a reason, they know how to hit and they will start to find weaknesses.

With that being said, Collins looks nasty and Crow looks like he could dominate with that fastball. But Crow scares me the most of those two because of his lack of pitches. I’m the kind of guy that prefers the Soria and Rivera type guys because they aren’t flamethrowers. Seems like the hard throwing guys fizzle out quicker, but that is just my observation.

rivera is the king of 'lack of pitches'

he’s throw one pitch for the vast majority of his career and threw just as hard as crow

    Yes

But his one pitch is not a 96 mph fastball. It is a cutter that moves pretty darn well and has always been placed very damn well. I should have clarified more I guess. Crow scares me because his best pitch is his fastball and he doesn’t have that off-balance causing breaking ball….yet!

    This confuses us bandwagon fans

Do I jump on or is it too early to buy a Tim Collins jersey and say I’ve been following him “since he was in AA Wichita”? I’m not so sure on proper bandwagon etiquette.

I don't think there is any etiquette for bandwagon fans.

Isn’t that kind of the point of a bandwagon fan? You can come and go as you please without any type of consequence.

    How liberating.

    Yes

So feel “free” to buy that Collins jersey and wear it proudly while he is pitching well. And, of course, feel free to pretend you don’t own it if he pitches poorly. Such freedom on the bandwagon! Everybody has been a bandwagon fan for some team at some point in their life.

    Possible,

“Just like the Greinke deal, you would have to get a couple guys that are capable of or very close to contributing right away.”

Not sure what we will need next year or ‘13. Outfield will be Myers, Cain, Gordon, Eibner, Lough; infield Moustakas, Escobar, Giavotella/Colon, Hosmer/Kila; catcher Pina/ Perez; starting pitching? Pick five of ten. That is why I figure a big haul of A and A+, either that or get a second AAA team. If we are going to get an everyday major leaguer to clog things up, might as well keep Billy and Kila and leave Hosmer down. f course, I’m looking to seriously compete this year.

“Soria probably makes more sense than Butler as far as a trade goes.”

Agree, and with the same idea. The Rays have like a dozen first round picks this year, so will have plenty of A and A+ prospects available from the last two years. Trade for prospects and don’t sign any free agents, we just don’t need them. Trickle the kids up and let them get the first season of the majors out of the way and plan on winning the division next year. That’s what my offered line-up was aiming for.
