I prefer him to SOS, Mendoza, and Pucetas… but that could just be nostalgia speaking.
His last decent year was 2007 (2.5 WAR)
He did have a 4.89 FIP in 100 innings last year which could be borderline 5th starter material. Though Mazzaro is the better choice (5.13 FIP, but age 24 and 4.55 xFIP). Still, I’d probably take Suppan over SOS even with the age difference.

I don't mind it
if Suppan is going to replace Chen or Davies, or stay in the minors until needed. I do mind it if he blocks Mazzaro. Maz needs to pitch in the majors so we can find out if he can throw a 4.50 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP. If so, he is a very useful #4 pitcher. Our young pitchers are all at least a year away, and we are going to need a couple of minimally competent starters until 2013. (Here’s looking at you, Luke.).
