Keeping Tabs on the Future: Following the Royals Top Prospects
With all of the hype surrounding the Royals farm system, more people than in the past will be focused on how the Royals top prospects are performing. Strong performances will cause people to call for the prospects to be promoted, while weak performances will cause many to worry if too much pressure has been placed on such young players. Either way, it should be an exciting year for the Royals farm system. To help keep everyone up to date, this will be a weekly article reviewing how the players performed the past week. Ideally, we could keep track of how everyone in the system is doing, however, that would require an incredible amount of labor and few people really care how well Jeff Suppan is pitching for the Storm Chasers. So i have chosen who I think are the most important and interesting prospects in the Royals farm system. I will list them after the jump, and describe how they did in their first game yesterday.
AAA:
Mike Moustakas (3B) - Moustakas had an RBI single in the third inning, but was hitless in his other four at-bats. He also struck out in his last two, and made a fielding error in the sixth
Eric Hosmer (1B) - In his first Triple-A game, Hosmer went 2-for-5 with two singles and scoring a run.
Mike Montgomery (SP) - Montgomery was hit hard in his first start of the season, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work. He struck out three batters and walked two, but did force eight groundouts compared to one flyout.
Danny Duffy (SP) - Did not pitch in the first game, and I assume he will start Saturday's game; Suppan is the probable pitcher for Friday's game.
Johnny Giavotella (2B) - Giavotella went 1-for-5 in the opener, but struck out in his first Triple-A at-bat.
David Lough (RF) - Lough went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored before being removed for Irving Falu in the bottom of the sixth inning.
AA:
Wil Myers (RF) - Myers hit third in his first game for the Naturals, going 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
Chris Dwyer (SP) - Dwyer battled in his first start of the season, giving up three runs on four hits in four innings. He struck out four while walking three, and only threw 78 pitches, 44 of them for strikes.
John Lamb (SP) - Lamb will duel fellow top prospect Casey Kelly Friday night in the series second game. Kelly is one of the pieces the Padres acquired from Boston for trading the Adrian Gonzalez.
Christian Colon (2B) - Colon went 2-for-4, including a home run in his first at-bat of the season. He struck out once, and was caught stealing.
Salvador Perez (C) - Perez went 0-for-2 with a walk, but did throw out the only runner who attempted to steal on him.
Derrick Robinson (CF) - Robinson went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, but did steal second after reaching base on a fielder choice.
High-A:
Tim Melville (SP) - The righthander will start the Blue Rocks opener on Friday night.
Jake Odirizzi (SP)
Noel Arguelles (SP)
Low-A:
Brett Eibner (CF) - Eibner hit a solo homerun in his first professional at-bat. He finished 1-for-3 on the day, striking out once while walking once.
So those are 16 guys I will for sure update on during the season. When short season kicks off, I will add Robinson Yambati, Cheslor Cuthbert, Jason Adam and Yordano Ventura to the list of players. Is there anyone else you think I should keep updates on all season? Let me know in the comments. I know I will be watching how Will Smith and Clint Robinson perform, but don't know if there is enough interest in them to write about all season long. I hope this article will help keep everyone up to date on how the Royals Prospects are performing.

I know he's not with the Royals...or even playing ball as far as I know
But could you update us on Chris Hayes? Just what he’s doing, what he had for breakfast, what TV shows he’s watching? Thanks.

Disco's in Maryland.
Throwing for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, whose season starts in three weeks.
And now I kinda wish I hadn’t moved back to Lawrence from Baltimore.
No info in regards to breakfast or television shows. Dude hasn’t tweeted in a while.
and Willie Mays Hayes too, while you're at it ;)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I'd actually be interested in the progress of Smith and Robinson
…but I know it’s not me doing the work.
Appreciate your efforts, whoever you elect to include on your list (unless it’s Kendall).

In my version of MLB 11
He’s the closer for AAA. Apparently, he also has one of the best change-ups in baseball. I downloaded my roster from some random guy, so I can only assume that his main pitch is the change-up. It was on the internetz, so it must be true.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
If it's Knight's roster, it was parted out to different people for each team.
So hopefully the guy that did the Royals put some real effort into it, but so far I’m thinking Moose and Hosmer were shorted.
That one wasn't out when I started...
I just chose one with the 100+ best prospects. I had to do a bunch of editing myself for some other teams.
The game annoys me though. There are way too many irrational trades. For instance, Bryce Harper was traded for Rowand-Smith and some useless parts. Great trade for the Astros, I suppose.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Yeah, I traded for Bryce Harper
I believe all it cost me was my dead wood. Jesse Chavez, and some other 4th OFer types.
On the other hand, the computer is offering me trades for Wil Myers, and he’s raking in AA.
I wonder if all this press will knda back fire on the prospects.
And, what I mean is since so many Royals prospects are so hyped will other teams try harder against the starting pitchers to show off how good they are. Kinda how major leaguers on rehab assignments or sometimes hit hard then move up to the majors and go right back to dominating. We might have to look beyond traditional stats, which I know most here do but not everyone will, to see how they are truly doing.
Just a thought i had.
I think the other guys in the minor leagues will be motivated enough...
and with the minor league guys, there’s always an element of looking past the stats
unf, the stats are all we have, being outsiders
Totally forgot about Cain.
He will definitely be included on this list

rec!
As a serious fan but a lurker here (since I spend nearly all my time on lonestarball), I really appreciate this thread.
Godspeed Mike Olt. Oops. Sorry, to see you're trade bait now.
Moustakas
Moustakas has made 3 errors in the 1st 2 games. I have followed his career since he was at Wilmington and he has always had very bad defense. I don’t understand why they are holding 3rd base for him . Presently, he is not a major league defense 3rd baseman. I believe in time he will be another DH for the Royals
I wouldn't worry too much about the errors
Brett, for example, was an error machine for the 1st 6-7 years of his career. The question is does Moose have the athleticism to improve and the range to not kill you. I don’t know the answer to this….but I’m sure one of the smart people around here does.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
leaves us out, doesn't it Satch ;)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Sure, keep this up
I think NW Royal (?) has been doing something similar for several years. But the more inforrmation and reasonable opinions that the site gets, all the better, no?
