A simple report from a night in Omaha
Yesterday, my family made the trip to Omaha. My daughter's girl scout troop was going to the zoo, so I decided that we would go to the Stormchasers game in the evening. The Omaha zoo is very nice. It has to be one of the more impressive zoos in the country. We generally check out zoos when we take vacations, so we have been to quite a few. Omaha is easily the most impressive. The fun question is always asked. "Why do all you Kansas City area people come up here? Don't you all have a zoo?". I always come back with "Yes, we technically have a zoo. But, first off, it's piss poor and secondly, it's in the middle of the ghetto." That usually sums it up. But, now, on to the game.
Tickets are reasonable for the Stormchasers. $16.50 will get you club level and they are nice seats, but for $12.50, you can get some great seats. Saturday night was replica road jersey night, so we got 4 Omaha jerseys. The only problem is they have the name Buffet (for obvious reasons) on the back with the number 1/16. We sat in the front row first base side. Section 106 and they were great seats. Don't worry about bringing your kids. They have plenty of things for the kids to do (even some free stuff) and they have 3 mascots that are terrific with the children. The wife was happy with the food selection, so daddy was free to watch a baseball game with minimal complaints other than the cold. The fans were fairly knowledgeable about the Royals and absolutely love Mike Aviles. He's super popular in Omaha. I found it funny that they thought I was from the deep south or something. I have the Missouri twang when I talk and generally, I don't think anything of it, but they seemed tickled by it.
Mazzaro had a fairly rough start to the game. He allowed the leadoff hitter on to base and attempted a pick-off and tossed it halfway down the left field line. The runner eventually scored. Other than that, he pitched fairly well. He had 6 Ks through 3 innings and I think he finished with 10. I don't mind Vinny Maz. He should be a nice addition to the pitching staff....Oh, I don't know.....NOW! I digress. Moustakas didn't look great in the field, but he is a very patient hitter. He absolutely smoked a 2 RBI single to give Omaha the lead in the 5th (I think). He airmailed a routine throw over Hosmer's head in the 2nd and later he barehanded a tough one, but proceeded to throw the ball away again. He should be fine though. Looks like we've got a 3B of the future.
Hosmer looks like a ballplayer. I know that's a silly statement, but the dude just looks like a big leaguer. Patient hitter. The fans had a lot of great things to say about The Hos. Johnny Giavotella was much better than I thought he was. Maybe he's just a player you need to watch to like. He plays hard and you could see him manning secondbase in KC in the future. Blanco was only hitting .225 when the game started, but he took 3 BBs. The first base umpire was horrible. He couldn't make a decent call to save his life and Omaha's manager (I can't remember how to spell his name) told him where he could take his bad calls. The kids in Omaha really seem to like him a lot and he seems like a good guy to have working with them.
Lastly, Lorenzo Cain was baffling. His arm out in CF is super impressive! I had no idea he could throw like that. But, he may need some time in Omaha to sort out his bat. They had him bunting with 2 strikes twice and both times it failed miserably. Imagine that. I was baffled as to why they had him doing that. It made no sense. It seems they don't have a closer either. Teaford pitched decently, then they brought in Tex. Tex got a K or two, but gave up a BOMB to bring the game within 1, so they brought on Jesse "Lights Out" Chavez to shut the door (Yikes)! He got the job done. But, the player I seemed to be the most dazzled by was D-Lough. I'm not sure where this guy fits into the prospect chain, but the dude is a gamer. He reminds me of Hunter Pence in Houston. You need to watch this guy play ball.
Well, that's all I got. I highly recommend taking the trip up there. The talent of the team is great and the ballpark experience is one of the best I've ever seen. The stadium isn't exactly easy to find because it is truly out in the middle of nowhere. I think I even saw a family farm right across the road. So, get anything you may need to get at the gas station long before you get near the park.

to be fair
the KC Zoo really isn’t in the middle of a ghetto. Especially if you approach it from the East. Not sure how the Johnson Countians approach it though.
And… it sounds like part of the problem with Cain and bunting there is odd management than a lack of hitting skill. But I have a suspicion he might wind up on the same island of “People we wanted months ago but who we don’t want any more” with Lucas May and Gregor Blanco.

Chairman, The Melky Cabrera Seasoning Sauce. It's great on your outfield!
Yeah, weird dig at the zoo
I love Starlight.
Other than that, thanks for the writeup. Lots of good info!

For all the crap our zoo gets
Its actually quite nice. We went a year ago, expecting it to be crappy since everyone criticizes it so much. We had a blast.
And you’re right, its not a ghetto. Its actually where a lot of middle class African-Americans live now. Not a bad neighborhood at all.

I thought I read once
That Swope Park is one of the largest city parks in the US, acreage wise.

I think it's the second biggest after New York's Central Park

The KC zoo is nice
bit above average when it comes to zoo’s really.
But the problem comes when you are just 3 hours away from a top 10 zoo in the world. Can’t really compete with that.

I'm from Saint Joe and haven't been to Swope Park since having a scary experience as a high school senior
I usually try to avoid places where bodies tend to turn up about every 6 months. Its just not somewhere I would take my family and feel safe. I didn’t mean to offend anybody, but the zoo would be a better draw if it wasn’t located in a high crime area. FWIW, I also avoid areas around trailer parks and hillbillies.

Count me in among the KC Zoo defenders
I think the Zoo is great. It’s gotten better over the last few years, too. Very spread-out. The Australia section is cool, and the Africa exhibits are also pretty fun, too. Swope Park is actually pretty nice, too, particularly during the summer months. Starlight’s fun.
I’m not sure why people love the Omaha Zoo so much (other than the possible lack of black people nearby)…it’s fine, but like the KC Zoo, it can get expensive. (If you live in the city of KCMO, occasionally there are free ticket offers with your water bill, so that’s nice). The best zoo within a few hours of KC is the St. Louis Zoo (which is free!) and like the KC Zoo is in a very large, fun urban park (Forest Park).

I'm also quite a fan of the KC Zoo..
The Africa exhibit is world class, although they have so much open space that some of the animals can be hard to see (though this issue certainly isn’t unique to this zoo).
As for the neighborhood, I’ve never felt unsafe driving in the area (and certainly not in the zoo). I don’t feel unsafe walking around Swope Park either. Then again, I’m relatively fearless as far as such things go.

Good write up
Gio seems to be a fan fave whereever he goes. Interesting comparison for Lough – would be thrilled if he even comes close to that.
Lorenzo’s bunting inability will keep him from ever getting the call from Dayton!

Thank you
I was just shocked that they had Cain bunting with 2 strikes. It seemed so stupid and it had everyone in the stands puzzled. I’d like to see D-Lough come close to Pence too. He stood out to me because of how into the game he was and how hard he plays. Fiery guy.

I recommend sitting in the Berm seating if you have kids
Like 6 bucks a ticket and first 50 kids get in for a buck and on sundays you get a free berm ticket for every canned food item you bring and the kids can just run around.. The ball park isnt really in the middle of nowhere, i mean yea currently its in the middle of a corn field but its off a major highway in bellevue/papillion and about 1 minute from restaurants and shopping.. by the way the ultimate plan is for the park to be surrounded by an outdoor mall (think legends in kck).. on a side note i went to the new downtown stadium today for creighton/cws and its absolutely beautiful so if your in omaha and are baseball hungry check out both parks if you can

That would be a great spot for a shopping center
The wife and I thought we were lost. We thought there was no way there would be a ballpark anywhere around that area. Then, it just appeared. It’s a beautiful park and I am really impressed with the baseball fans of Omaha. It’s a nice town and we will be coming up again for sure. Great experience.

Shopping Center at Kauffman
Why don’t they do that? It would make it a true destination spot that everyone craves for their ballparks. You could build it right in the existing parking lots and add parking garage for the lost spaces.
Now with 30% less snark!
The Royals and Chiefs love those parking lots
They are nice revenue generators. The other surrounding land I’ve been told is not very suitable for large scale development – very uneven terrain.

I'm not sure how profitable shopping centers are today
Obviously, Legends has done very well, and Zona Rosa seems like a success (I’ve never been there), but most of Kansas City’s malls are dying/dead (e.g. Indian Springs, Bannister, Metro North, Meltcalf South, Mission Center, that one at 135th and I-35, that one just east of the stadiums, etc). It would have been interesting if they’d done shopping centers when the stadiums were built, but it seems to me that the era of the shopping center is coming to an end, (especially if $4 gas is here to stay).
"I think a tactical error might have been committed by the manager of the Royals"
Expensive gas is all kinds of bad for shopping centers
In the short run, high gas prices divert spending to gas stations from discretionary purchases, reducing the amount of shopping people do. It also causes people to reduce car trips, which drives (no pun) them to substitute internet shopping for a trip to the mall.
In the long run, high gas prices drive up demand for walkable communities and spur the development of more. People move into redeveloped urban areas or new suburban communities in the style of Brookside and they get out of the habit of driving to stores.
I do actually think that small local shopping centers intergrated into communities do fine. Nothing will change the need for a neighborhood grocer, pharmacy, etc. It’s the big mall-style places and the big shopping corridors like 119th Street I wonder about. Those are dependent on destination shopping trips, and I think those trips are getting more scarce.
"I think a tactical error might have been committed by the manager of the Royals"
The indoor shopping center is dead
The new thing is outdoor “lifestyle centers” which seem to be doing quite well – Mission Farms, Town Center, Blue Ridge, as well as Zona Rosa and Legends.

fuck that....the one thing the stadiums have going for them is the parking lots...
they’re awesome…great for tailgating….our stadiums are uniqure…if they were to build stupid parking garages then it was completely poinltess to keep the stadiums where they’re at.

I've been to the Omaha Zoo
Its not exactly in Mission Hills itself.
I'm trying hard but some of this sabermetrics stuff sounds madeup.
Zoo's a lot better than it used to be
As far as being in the “ghetto”, that area of KC is actually a bit north of Swope…and even then, I worked for years as a city inspector in the area and never, ever had a problem. Doesn’t mean I’d recommend hanging out at 27th and Prospect at 1 AM necessarily but there’s absolutely no reason not to go anywhere in the area during the day.
Had a bad experience in the Swope Park area.
And all the news you ever hear about it is that bodies are always “turning up” there (I was almost one of them). I just tend to avoid those types of places. I guess you’re right about the “ghetto” area being a little North, but last I knew Swope Park was still a popular hangout for gang members and pedophiles. Of course, it has been years since I’ve been there. If the zoo has gotten better, that’s a good thing. I remember it being kind of dumpy compared to some of the other zoos we’ve been to in the last few years (Ft. Worth, Minneapolis, Denver, Houston, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Atlanta).
I need to go take a Davies and wipe my Elarton. Excuse me.
You've mentioned this a couple times
And I did a google search, and I can only find two instances of bodies turning up in Swope Park.
If you haven’t been to the Kansas City Zoo in a while, you really ought to go back. I think zoos in general made a great leap in design over the last decade, and the KC Zoo is part of that wave.
