Gotta agree with most of the commenters on the article...

None of those trades really make sense.
The Royals especially. They get basically nothing from that deal that we don’t already have.

Exactly

We would get another Lorenzo Cain and Elisaul Pimentel from the sounds of it….no thanks.

Our MVP (up to this point) is now gone.

I like the logic here, at least.

But yeah, I agree with RoyalPug: We already have a Melky!

er.....perhaps rewording the title of this would deter idiots like me from making asinine assumptions.

But probably not.

I don't think anyone should ever

post a hypothetical or a rumor in such a fashion that the headline looks like an actual headline.

I just spent five minutes cleaning coffee off my damned monitor after seeing the headline.

Betimet will get dealt

For a similar haul than we got for Callaspo I would guess. AAAA pitcher and maybe an intriguing A ball arm.

What's the likelihood that Betemit reaches type B/A status?

Why trade him for more crap instead of getting a draft pick?

by BrRoyal on May 24, 2011 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

If he reaches said status. Better start racking up the RBI.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on May 24, 2011 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it's pretty high that he'll at least reach type B

According to mlbtraderumors’s reverse-engineered Elias rankings, Betemit got himself reasonably close to type B with just 80 games of production last season. Elias looks at the last two years, so playing this year, he knocks the crappy 20 games he played in 2009 out of the 2-year window and replaces them with ~135 very productive games in 2011. If I could find the actual formula that MLBTR uses, I’d have a better idea, but just judging from the results they spit out, I’d hazard a guess that Betemit is more likely to be a Type A free agent than he is to fail to make at least Type B.

by kcdc1 on May 24, 2011 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, if he stays a full-time player, he'd make type B status, IMO

But that’s a big IF. Would Moore let Betemit block Moose? And Betemit can’t play any other position in the field (except for 1B).

by Scott McKinney on May 24, 2011 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

betemits continued hitting

would be a good reason to keep moose in omaha through this season if its going to result in a draft pick or two. However, it’d still be really tough to keep Moose down until april 20 to get the extra year

by billybeingbilly on May 24, 2011 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Moore can help himself though

I have a feeling he’s itching to promote Moose and will do it in June.

by deezle on May 24, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Betimet can still survive

As a utility player of sorts. That was his original role anyway. A spot start at 3B, 1B, DH, maybe even LF and 2B once in awhile. His playing time would be reduced quite a bit.

But that’s IF Moose starts really hitting. He’s doing okay now and warming up, but I wouldn’t call him up before September if his numbers are still where they are at.

by RoyalsRetro on May 24, 2011 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if the Royals don't want to play Betemit full-time, the likelihood of him reaching Type B if traded boosts his value.

Teams wouldn’t just be acquiring a half-season of Betemit—they’d be acquiring a half-season of Betemit and a sandwich pick. When you’re selling extra value, you can get extra value back.

by kcdc1 on May 24, 2011 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

What about

Betemit for Chris Nelson and someone like Edwar Cabrera?

I don't think the Rockies would deal Dexter Fowler

But Betemit would be a stud in Colorado. If Mora can do it, he can do it much easier. Why not go after their catcher who is blocked? McKenry? I’ve never seen him player but I wrote a thing on him last year and he seemed to be decent. And then gamble on a low A arm.

On the basis of just talent

I’d take Fowler over Cain.

I think I do too

And quite frankly I think having two guys who might possibly end up being 2 WAR CFers increases the chances that one of them actually achieves that level of performance.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

by Scott McKinney on May 24, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah...even if they're identical players...

i’ll take both of them. I also think Fowler’s been consistently more highly regarded than Cain for whatever that’s worth.

and now that I've stepped away

shouldn’t the Royals do this in a heartbeat? Are there seriously people who WOULDN’T do this trade? A cost-controlled CF and potential starting pitcher for a guy whose glove (really) only plays at 1B/DH, and whose bat plays everywhere BUT 1B/D?

Yeah, I think this is more than the Royals could reasonably get for a part-season rental of Betemit

I’d do it in a second. Don’t think the Rox would offer it.

Right

You don’t often see teams in a pennant race trade MLB players. They may be sour on Fowler, but you always keep guys like that around for depth – and maybe look for a deal in the off-season. If they get Betimet, it will be for a pair of minor leaguers.

by Scott McKinney on May 24, 2011 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

as an aside

the addition of UBR pushed Gardner over 6 WAR for last season. SIX! crazy stuff… obviously he’s very unlikely to ever repeat that, but I’d be a bit surprised if he didn’t end up over four this season.

When I first started pimping Gardner a while back, I thought he had an outside chance of being a 3.5 WAR player ,didn’t think I’d be using numbers like four, let alone six.

I agree

Hell, back when he was a prospect, I thought he’d maybe end up being DDJ-like (if he actually panned out in the majors). Certainly didn’t see 4+ WAR coming.

I thought he’d be a pinch runner for a few weeks, get sent down, then bounce around the minors for a whlie.

LF or CF?

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on May 24, 2011 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

he mostly played LF last season

but the positional adjustments are supposed to work out as “neutral” in the OF, although in practice it doesn’t work that way. However, Gardner played primarily CF in the minors and was considered very good there, so I think it’s possible it would in his case.

Just to be clear

This is not a real trade offer, just something an ESPN columnist pulled out of his ass.

The Hunter Pence/Dom Brown trade is hilarious. In what world do the Phils make that move?

Absolutely

Betemit for Fowler straigth up would be an awesome deal for the Royals.

by BlueEyes_Austin on May 24, 2011 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah some of those were crazy, Rocks would be crazy on this one

But got me thinking, Rockies would be a good fit and they have lots of intriguing guys. I’d be happy getting any ONE of the following in a deal for Betemit:

Tim Wheeler, Charlie Blackmon, Tyler Matzek, Christian Friedrich, Rex Brothers.

Probably not happening with Brothers but I could see them giving up on Matzek who has been bad and Royals working some down on the farm magic with him. Wheeler and Blackmon have been putting up very nice years thus far. I’d prefer Fowler but I don’t think that is a realistic option.

Brothers reminds me of Affeldt

for instance

At times he pitched the best curve I’d ever seen.

Other times he’d get pretty nervous out there on the mound.

Still other times he sat on the DL with a fingernail injury.

Blisters!

Yeah he had that recurring blister problem until his fingernail was surgically removed and then had acid applied so it wouldn’t grow back. So after that, no more DL for blisters, but he still couldn’t handle being a SP. Did pan out as a pretty good lefty reliever though.

I'd take an Affeldt

The more I think about it the more I like Betemit for Brothers. That would give us a pretty insane collection of potentially dominating bullpen arms and make trading Soria not hurt nearly as much. Or obtaining Brothers could mean moving Crow to AAA and let him develop as a starter. Brothers/Jeffress/Collins/Coleman pretty damn good bullpen even without Crow and Soria in the mix.
