Orioles Score 3 in 9th Off Soria, Duffy Denied First Win
Two Quick hits:
- Duffy pitched pretty decent. 6 Ks, 3 BBs, 5 Hits. He started struggling in the last couple innings though.
- Soria is off. I am not sure how. Let me look tomorrow to see if it is the cutter. A cutter is meant to induce ground balls plays. Then the team's infielders are supposed to field them. When two balls are hit near Wilson Betemit there is a good chance they will end up as hits. Also, don't, for the love of God, throw a high faster ball to Luke Scott. It might end up as a home run.

I'm sensing
that some of you are unhappy with Soria’s performance.
How many LOB did we have tonight. Seems like we blew a shat load of scoring chances. That’s one big difference between now and the glory days (April.) We somehow knocked runners in more than we didn’t. I pine for those times.
I'll grant that that's true
But still, Soria was someone we thought we could rely on. Of all the things that were up in the air, or were mere potential in the minors, the ninth inning closer is one thing we Royals fans figured was already in place. Soria going sour on us is a major downer, it puts us back at almost square one as a team.

Not really. They're replaceable and Crow (if he stays in the bullpen) is right in line with the role.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
Sure, we can make Crow the closer
But we thought we had the closer role taken care of, and Crow could be the 8th-inning man, like a Joba-Mariano tandem. (well, back when Joba was doing that) Now we’re short one reliable pitcher again, whichever way you slice it.
Chaim Mattis Keller New York City's # 1 Royals fan!
I fear putting Crow in that role
Not because he can’t handle it – he can – but because it would be virtually impossible for our organization to move him back to a starter after he sits in the king’s throne as a closer.
I can already picture Kaegel churning out articles about how much more valuable Crow was as a closer than as a starter.
I've already accepted that his time as a starter is over.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
In January, I advocated trading Soria because closers just don't last long.
and Gopherballs shared this comment about closers WAR over a few years in the thread with this:
You can also sort the same leaderboard by saves (click twice on "SV" category). What is interesting is that only 17 pitchers have recorded 100 or more saves between 2005 and 2010. Most full-time closers get 30-35 saves per year, so it is surprising that only 17 recorded the equivalent of three seasons worth of saves over the six-year period.
We really shouldn’t be surprised if Soria’s time is coming to an end.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

This is what I said... maybe I should of said trade him now.
Shows how hard it really is to be consistent at the back end of a bullpen.
Trade Soria at the deadline. I’m all for it.
You mentioned
the flying front shoulder… How much of this could be to blame.

i don’t see him all that much, but he looked genuinely bewildered at what is going on…i don’t think he’s hurt based on everyone’s reactions, i think its a combination of something mechanical and some randomness going on.

I can’t remember him leaving so many pitches up high….or totally missing the strike zone completely. Usually when he misses, its by a few inches.

I think it is the cutter
I think he doesn’t have the location down on it yet, and it’s maki g him throw a lot of balls, and give up those walks. And I want to see your data too Jeff, and see if those two doubles were the cutter. If they were, and Betemit screwed up both plays, then I could sorta see why he threw a junk pitch just trying to keep the ball from going left field.

i think arod gets a bad rap.....
he just makes decisions that when highlighted by the NY media make him look dumb. He’s always done everything he could to win….he was willing to give up like $30 million to go to a team to win. He was willing to and never complained about moving off of SS so that a vastly inferior player could play SS.
Pujols i think is a whiny bitch…and he plays for the cardinals….and he still doesnt speak english after like 25 years in this country and like 10 years in our public school system, etc….its mostly that he plays for the cardinals though.

Hmmm good points I suppose... Counter point though
It’s cooler to stay with an average team and help IT win ala Jordan than to ditch it for a stacked team to get your ring ala LeBron. One means yay you got a ring, the other means you’re a legend. He was also willing to cheat and juice up to win, and even with the juice, still not as good as Pujols. And he can’t even feed himself popcorn.

Down the road we will have 2 or 3 closers… Kind of a closer rotation. Jeffress, Coleman look likely… Possibly Collins too. Might as well maximize all three’s value if they can all dominate at it. I hope Crow gets to start next year, otherwise he’s an obvious closer option as well.

Was at the game....that was disappointing
Also, I can see why people like Frenchy so much. My girlfriend and I sat near the Royals dugout and were cheering for the players as they went in and out each inning, and Frenchy was the guy who gave us smiles and hat tips. Escobar looked confused that someone knew and could pronounce his first name.
No one's ever said Frenchy wasn't a nice guy
And he does it without the Mike Sweeney Bible-banging. (I’m pro-Jesus myself, though I pass on the supernatural stuff. I just think jocks ought to mostly shut up about their religion. Mention it a couple of times, great, so people know what you’re about, but don’t pound on it every day.)
The only thing I’ve ever heard Frenchy criticized for was pouting while not starting in New York. That and hitting lousy until this season.
"They may make cool judgements after the fact

Duffy
is throwing too many pitches and doesn’t have the endurance yet to make six innings, so that should be expected. Like with Davies and often Hoch, and now Adcock, team needs a couple of three inning relievers to piggy-back the short starters. Teaford is an obvious choice and maybe Davies, when he gets back, another one, as he can throw well one time through a lineup and has his own endurance problems. No reason each couldn’t throw three predictable innings two times each a week, get through the eight, then bring in the shutdown guys, Crow or Coleman, although I prefer Crow for highest leverage situations.
On Soria, I still think there is a physical issue, he just has not looked good this year. I’ld IR him for a couple of weeks, move Coleman in as closer, hope Soria can fix himself, then either trade him or use him earlier in the game, probably sixth inning, til he can earn his way back to late or high leverage. He’s earned some patience, but the job of a reliever is to shut down the opponents for three batters and he is not delivering at the moment. Something needs to be fixed and the ninth inning in a 3-2 game is not the time to work on it.
by Jim Fetterolf on May 25, 2011 12:08 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
I agree. They keep trotting him out there
as if nothing’s wrong; clearly, that’s not the case. Chen is due to come back from the DL soon; it would be an ideal time to send Soria to the 15 day DL, and buy time to figure out what’s wrong and figure out what they want to do next.

I won't be shocked if he goes on the DL soon.
With some vague diagnosis like a stiff shoulder or sore back. Something is clearly wrong, even if it’s just mental, so giving him a couple weeks of rest may be worth a shot. Of course, if Crow comes in and kicks butt as the replacement closer, things would really get interesting . . .

Just a correction:
Coleman gave up an RBI double to Wieters
went to the game tonight
I saw a woman in a Danny Duffy jersey in line to buy tickets at the box office at about 6:00 and I went up to her and asked her where she’d gotten a Duffy jersey so quickly. She turned out to be his aunt and had had it made to celebrate his promotion. Very nice woman.
As for the game, it was fun seeing the new guys for the first time this year, and the game was pretty enjoyable until the 9th. Duffy still seemed to be leaving an occasional fastball dangerously high in the zone, but overall he looked good. Orioles fans around me were impressed.
I was sitting along the 3rd base side, and I don’t think Brooks Robinson would have gotten either of those doubles hit off of Soria in the 9th inning. Those are on Soria, not Betemit.

Sucks to lose a game in which everyone in the lineup gets on base
at least once. You guys are right: there’s something wrong with Jack. A trip to the DL and some focusing on the fastball and the curve might help. Crow is having the best season among Röyals pitchers and should be the closer while Jack is out.
So who’s the Röyals’ representative at the All-Star Game this year with Soria performing poorly? Hate to say it, but it looks like it’s got to be Frenchy.
"They may make cool judgements after the fact

Positive from the game is that Duffy looked great
Once he learns to be more efficient with his pitches he is going to be a legit mid/top rotation starter for us.
So can we move Soria to the rotation now?
Because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But now its broke. So let’s try it!

Would be nice to have Montero right now lol
Not saying the trade of Soria for Montero was ever on the table but with how bad our catching position is it would be sweet to have Montero ready to come up with Moose.

To me the two most telling things were: 1— O’s were 0 for 20 when trailing after 8 till yesterday; and 2— he was facing bottom of order. It was just pretty inexcusable.
