Plus ça change...
So much roster turnover, so little difference. Here are the Royals' records after 51 games in recent years:
- 2011: 23-28
- 2010: 21-30
- 2009: 23-28
- 2008: 21-30
- 2007: 19-32

Same wins
as ’09 but without the ace pitcher building his Cy Young season. Oh well, Master Chen will be back and save us:)
Improvement!

Interesting,
but ’09 did have some high priced free agents and maybe a couple of guys brought in through trades for young players, basically what is being suggested here and in other venues.
Not really

Guillen and Meche were there before ’09. Everyone else is random crap filler from all over the place or people brought up from the farm.
Who was the young players traded for?
Edgar knows best.

Guillen and Meche were there before ’09
And how did that work for the team, beyond burning $20m of payroll? Both were on the team in ’09, so a useful comparison to now with the same record but half the payroll and much younger guys with upside. I would rather not go back to that method of building a team. Not that I oppose trades, but prefer trading old for young, like in the Greinke deal; peddle Melky, Frenchy, Butler, Gordon, or even Master Chen for the right price, at the moment Chen being the most difficult player to replace with Cain, Lough, Moooose and Clint Robinson a phone call away.
“Who was the young players traded for?”
Two relievers traded for Crisp and Jacobs, as I remember, Ramirez and Nunez?.

At the start of the season
based largely on information I got right here, I braced myself for a season that might be, at times, ugly. Lots of roster shake ups, adjustments, more experimenting than you find in a coed dorm in California. I was ready for it. But then, as has become customary, they started the season hot and provided hope of near-contention. It’s that false hope that ultimately gets me boiling every season. If I would have stuck with the original plan (“they’re going to suck, but it’ll be a good kind of suck”) I’d be as content and calm as a… content and calm thing.
The coach is an idiot.
How many times does Soria need to blow a save before we put someone else in a close game? He has cost us about 10 games this year. I would only put him in blowout games and let him get his confidence back. This coach is going to stick with him and allow the Royals to lose 100 games.
