I was hoping for a mound-charging-bench-clearing-brawl
Poetic justice after all the “Unite for Joplin” stuff. Maybe someone would have hurt Berkman’s knee again. Cards fans would have been crying in the streets while drinking their InBev Light.
Just the thought brings a smile to my face.
The fact that they would plunk him might have been the stupidest thing ever. La Russa is a damn idiot and people treat him like he is a genius because he bats the pitcher in the 8 hole.

I didn't get it but I wasn't following the game that closely.
But after Pujols stood and admired his homer, I couldn’t figure out why they went after Gordon.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

and not to mention...how does the pitcher not get tossed after throwing behind Gordon and then drilling him square in the back?

I think even a lot of Cards fans
Are completely fed up with him, judging by the VEB game thread.
Edgar knows best.
This
I was wondering the same thing…it’s questionable even if that happens by itself, not to mention after what went on earlier in the same game. Horrible umpiring.
You want optimism? My glass is half full of emptiness.
idiotic decision by la russa
put the tying run on base…just stupidity.

How dare you
Do you really think that with the division on the line La Russa would be caught asleep at the wheel?

I will love Gordon forever - just for this comment

If he would have walked over and punched LaRussa in the face....
…..they should have immediately ordered the Alex Gordon statue at the K right then and there.

LaRussa is a douchebag.
As he was in the beginning, is now, and forever will be, world without end. Amen. – TL

Question: ...
…I didn’t get to see the game, but who was on 1B when Pujols hurt himself, Hosmer?

Pujols was playing first.
Kozma through the ball wide of first right in the line of the baserunner. Instead of letting it go, Pujols stuck his arm right in front of Betemit’s chest, who was running full speed to first.

To 2B on the play because he was admiring his work

What the entire MLB should be saying....
GET EM ALEX!!!! I agree 100%. What, it’s not ok if Albert gets buzzed by an up and in heater? Why? because he is Albert Pujols? I think its a bunch of BS and when it takes more than 1 pitch to do it, the manager and the pitcher ought to be thrown out of the game and suspended for the next 1one. Piss on the Pujols, Larussa, and the Cardinals organization….see you pansies in 2012.

clearly due to..
a high inside pitch…
Look at it this way, St. Louis. This gives you 4 to 6 weeks to audition the replacement when Pujols skips town.

Pujols responds to the near HBP
By putting one over the fence. The Royals respond to the Gordon plunking by leaving two men stranded. That “meat of the order” Gordon speaks off really hasn’t been getting shit done.
When, oh when, will Melky and Frenchy be moved from their spots?
Yost has the entire order basically set up to alternate between “likely to get a hit” and “likely to pop-up/hit into a DP.”

Then the baseball gods expressed their disdain for his douche-ness

Betemit should demand a partial playoff share from the Brewers
"We're gonna win with pitching and defense" General Manager Dayton Moore, circa winter 2009
"Where did all these Indians come from?" General George Armstrong Custer, circa summer 1876
Perfect solution to both our problems: trade Betemit to St. Louis
he proved last week he could play first
Who am I kidding? Dayton will probably send them Clint Robinson for the last three months of Chris Carpenter’s career.
clint for 3 months of carp and the draft picks would be a steal for DM...

Do you get comp picks if he retires?
That was the joke I was making. Looking at Carp, there’s actually a 2012 team option for $15 mil or a $1 mil buyout. LIkely he’ll be a free agent at the end of the season and won’t be making near that much next year.
by OnixConcepcion on Jun 20, 2011 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Cards have to pick up that option, don't they?
Carpenter still has decent peripherals – but I think, since they will likely lose Pujols, and the FA starting pitcher market is very thin, and Wainwright’s return in 2012 may not be until mid season, and who knows how good Wainwright will be, they almost couldn’t take the PR hit by letting him go as well.
Just my two cents. They could pony up for Albert instead – and then use that as the excuse for letting Carpenter go. That would appease the fanbase, but leave the team woefully lacking in the starting rotation department. Would be reminiscent of the dog-and-pony show days of Big Mac, where the fans were sufficiently distracted not to notice the team was .500 and not a contender.
Some of the sensible Cardinal fans here in Jefferson City actually see the writing on the wall, and would prefer NOT to give Albert $25 or $30m, rightfully reasoning that it would cripple the team for a decade.
As for me, I’m delighted to see the Cardinals overextended and their GM subject to some VERY difficult decisions this off season. Would LOVE to see him panic, overpay for Berkman, followed by Berkman showing his age like he should be this season, but inexplicably is not.

Going to school near St. Louis
and being friends with a few too many Cardinals fans, I laugh in their faces when I tell them that Albert is going to destroy their team.
They can’t see my reasoning, but it’s coming and it makes me happy.

Good for Gordon
I agree with what Gordon said, I didn’t understand why alberto was so upset that he ALMOST got hit. Does he think that he shouldn’t get pitched inside, he’s a joke and is not above the game
This has a huge parallel with the Buster Posey injury
If Brayan Pena gets run over like Posey and has his season ended, it’s a side story, no big deal. I’m a Giants fan, and even I thought the play was clean.
Same for Pujols…if it’s Daric Barton getting his wrist broken, it’s a side story, no big deal. But Pujols?
And if the Cardinals got no warning, even, for the pitches at Gordon, Yost would’ve been within his rights to throw back at the Cardinals…because that should’ve only prompted a warning, right?
You want optimism? My glass is half full of emptiness.
I'd like to see Collins drill someone
Something tells me he’d have a roundhouse kick waiting for anyone who charged the mound….whether he could hit the target remains questionable.
We have met the enemy, and he is us.
Situations like these make me almost wish we still had Farnsworth.

I saw us get blown out by the White Sox a couple years ago.
Banny had nothing, and they brought in Fransworth to face Pierzynski. “Finally!” I thought. We’re going to throw at the biggest jerk in baseball. AJ proceeded to get a hit off of the professor, who did not throw at him.
I bet he has a MEAN case of short man's syndrome.
I envision him throwing his head back and letting out a King Leonidas roar before killing 4,000 persians 28 Cardinals with his bare hands.
