He promised major changes

Glad we took Gordon and pushed him down to #4. Makes perfect sense to have your better hitters hitting lower in the lineup and take your crappier hitters and hit them leadoff. Gordon has an OBA 40 points higher. And its .370 for the month of June. But Melky is in the top ten in the league in hits! I swear the analysis went no further than that.

In all seriousness, I’m reminded of the “Was Billy Martin Crazy?” chapter in Baseball Between the Numbers. The conclusion: not really.

Let's not rush to judgment here...

The most important thing is that Franceour is no longer in the cleanup spot, so our best hitter won’t be coming up with nobody on base as much. I admit, I was really liking Gordon leading off—so in a way the problem just changed. But I’m not sure it’s that simple to fix this one. If you keep Gordon at leadoff, and switch Frenchy and Butler—you get a handedness problem with too many lefties at the top of the lineup. For me, the only way this gets better is leaving it Gordon, Melky—but then going Butler, Hosmer, Franceour, Moose.

I tend to think the handedness problem is really overrated

Its a problem, what maybe once in a game? Most games its not an issue at all?

And against Arizona's lineup, probably not as much of an issue.

Maybe going against the Cardinals would be different.

I agree.

But I realize it’s a big deal for Ned. If I have it my way, I don’t worry too much about it—because in the next year or two, we’re going to be wondering why we have so many righties.

Looks fine to me

Everyone is in a reasonable spot for their talents except Melky at lead-off. Melky’s more of a power guy than an OBP guy, but the only other good OBP options for lead-off are Gordon, Hosmer and Butler, and they present the same problem where you’re wasting their power hitting them with no one on base.

This line-up also has a nice L-R-L-R-L core. It seems like a reasonable way to go.

by kcdc1 on Jun 22, 2011 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, the Royals have a problem a lot of teams have.

Their good OBP guys are also their power guys. Or, traditional leadoff type guys who get on base a lot are hard to find. The Yankees have one in Brett Gardner—but they prefer Jeter leading off.

that results in what .053 runs per game?

1.5 wins per season

I’d like to have those extra 1.5 wins. Punting them really doesn’t make sense. Shouldn’t Yost want to do everything he can to help the team win?

I hope that was sarcasm

The difference between a standard lineup and an optimal lineup over the course of a full season is about 1.5 wins (per Tango, Lichtman and Dolphin in “The Book”)

Why not have Escobar lead off?

He’s been hitting well as of late, and he has been getting on base more effectively.
