Is Mendoza a real thing?

I know he is having a good season and is an all star…but his age and track record say to be weary. Not to mention he obviously is related to Mario Mendoza.

Why not give him a shot? Cant be any worse than watching Davies and Hochevar. Maybe he can make it through 5 innings and notch a win when given 9 runs of support.

by craig102m on Jul 10, 2011 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

He has an ERA near 9 in his major league career and is striking out only 4 per 9 in AAA.

He most definitely would be worse than Davies and Hochevar. He is not remotely close to being a major league pitcher.

Probably, but at this point in the season what is it going to hurt to have him start over Davies or plug him in after the trade dealine? Not many people were very high on Paulino and who thought Chen would work out the way he has? If he gets shelled we release him.

by craig102m on Jul 10, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

The chances that Davies turns into a decent starter, as low as they may be, are still higher than the chances that Mendoza does.

Mendoza is striking out 4 batters per 9 in AAA. That is a pathetic total and completely eliminates ANY chance of him being a capable starter in the bigs. No, it wouldn’t make our season any worse…but it would be completely pointless and would be change just for the sake of change. That’s not a good enough reason. Mazzaro, Montgomery and even Suppan should be called up before Mendoza gets a chance.

Fletcher

Is pretty interesting as a COF bat. I’d like to see him move up soon. Evidently he has pretty terrible defense though.

Arguelles

Any info/scouting report on Arguelles? I know it’s a lot for the east coast, but I’m about ready to right him mostly off for his inability to strike out people.

Have they given up on stretching out Jeffress?

Or is two innings what they meant by having Jeffress start?

I don’t think he’s had a longer than 2 ip appearance in a long time (if ever, this season). Either they’ve given up on it, or they are waiting for Francis and/or Chen to be traded, leading to a promotion or two from Omaha, and then slotting him into Omaha’s rotation.

It's an interesting idea.

I hope they actually go through with it.

With his control issues, I don't see it ever working out.

I’d rather him focus on one inning and trying to figure out how to not walk guys.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

I don't see it working out either...

however, I’m firmly in the camp of people who believe that the best way to fix command/control issues is through practice. Starting allows for more practice.

If Carlo Testa ever makes the majors...

…can we make his nickname be “Nikola?” or maybe “The Coil?”

I could see Miner being a September call up.

I actually kind of expect it.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the war room!
