Phillies, Royals Discussing Melky Cabrera
"The Phillies and Royals have discussed a deal that would send Melky Cabrera to Philadelphia, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The sides have exchanged names, but they aren't close to completing a trade. "
"Some Phillies people think the Royals are asking for a "small fortune" for Cabrera, Francoeur and Joakim Soria, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe (on Twitter)."
Royals demanding a steep price for Melky and getting interest anyway? Don't know if a trade will be made, but this can't be bad news.

Sigh......
http://www.kansascity.com/2011/07/20/3025982/moore-mutes-speculation-on-deals.html
I'm a 14 year old freshman in high school with a love for all things Royals and Packers.
Prices for Melky and Soria should be high
Price for Frenchy also should be high if try think he’ll be type B. Plus Frenchy is a pretty good platoon guy. The type of bench bat that playoff teams covet.

How could Frenchy become Type B?
Wasn’t he terrible last year?

It doesn't take much to make Type B
That said, I don’t know if Frenchy has a good shot. I believe the calculation puts a good amount of weight into counting stats, so with ample playing time, I wouldn’t count him out.
He's close, but not that close

Only 7 players out
That’s closer than I thought he’d be. If he were to stay with the Royals, he’d likely play every day, and you know he’ll get his PA, HR and RBI. His batting average doesn’t tend to be awful either. Staying with the Royals, I’d guess he’d have maybe a 40% chance? If he gets traded, he’ll almost certainly become a platoon player and will have little chance to make Type B, so the Royals can’t dangle a potential compensation pick to improve his trade value.
They're using two years of data,
so all he need to improve his relative standing is to play better than his godawful (0.6 WAR) performance last year.
With the Phillies more or less guaranteed a playoff spot, I don't know why they'd go after Beltran
I feel like Cabrera makes a lot of sense for them, and I’m sure they’d rather trade prospects to us than to the Mets. I’m glad the high asking price isn’t scaring them off. I hope Dayton’s comments about keeping Melky don’t represent the absence of any other bidders. If we could get another team in a tighter playoff race (looking at you, NL Central) in the running, we’d get a better price for Melky.
b/c teams like the phillies try to win the WS not just make the playoffs...
and beltran is really good

the mets have made it very clear that they're willing to pay beltrans entire salary

I'm sure the Phillies
are using the trade options for a Melky or someone like him and comparing that to what the Mets want for Beltran. This probably weakens what we’ll get back in a trade for Melky while Beltran is still on the market.
Not really
Melky is 26 and has another year of team control. That balances things somewhat. Beltran is worth more, but not THAT much more.

I guess that's how teams think
But the playoffs are such a crapshoot. Having Beltran instead of Melky would increase the Phillies chances of winning the World Series by, what, 0.5 percentage points? More? Less?
Why would Melky make more sense for them?
Because they’d have control over him for next year? Maybe they don’t want him to be a starting OFer for them next year (based on his likely regression next year). And maybe for the same reason, they aren’t so interested in relying on him keeping up his good play through October.
Beltran is a better player. If I wanted an OFer for the playoffs, I’d pick Beltran over Melky in a second.

Because Melky doesn't cost as much
And because the prospects they’d give up for Beltran would decrease their chances of reaching the playoffs in future years while prospects they’d give up for Melky wouldn’t affect their playoff odds.
I know Beltran is the better player, but it’s not clear to me that getting the better player is worth that much. He’ll have almost no effect on their chances of making the playoffs, and he can’t really have much effect on their chances of winning series in the playoffs. There’s just not much increased benefit to compensate for the increased cost.
as i already said...the mets are willing to pay the salary...
so continuing to bring up the money issue doesnt make sense

I'm not talking about money
The Mets are paying his salary because they want more/better prospects in exchange for the trade. SInce propsects are a scarce resource, that represents a cost to the Phillies.
Beltran is much better than Melky, but I’m not sure that’s how every team perceives it.
Melky has an .800 OPS this season, is playing an acceptable center field, and is very affordable through 2012. We’ve had some argument here as to whether Melky’s offense this season is real improvement, and reasonable minds came down on different sides of the issue. But if a team has evaluated Melky’s progression and has concluded that the power spike is real, then they’re going to view Melky as a solution for this year and next.
Ultimately, teams will pay more in dollars and/or prospects to acquire Beltran because he’s a true impact player while Melky is just a nice piece that gives you slightly above average production at a bargain price. But the Mets are looking for an top-tier prospect for Beltran. If you believe Melky’s power is real, wouldn’t you rather give up a Salvador Perez-type prospect in exchange for Melky than an Wil Myers-type prospect in exchange for Beltran?
alright...that makes sense
and there’s also the health issue…beltran has had some trouble staying healthy whereas melky will be out there everyday.

I've got a feeling
That Melky and Frenchy can both bring backore than DeJesus did last year. Francis has some real value too, and after another nice start last night, Chen’s value is creeping upwards into the same ballpark as well.

I just read that the Brewers CF
broke his collar bone last night. Now maybe we have another bidder for CF help. Hopefully that will help drive up the price for Melky.
