Royals Fall to Indians Late

A walkoff homer by Matt Laporta wins it for the Indians. Soria's first blown save in awhile.

This was one of those games in which nothing happens, nothing happens, nothing happens, nothing happens. Oh My God! tons of things are happening!

Cleveland makes a big deal for Jimenez? Eh, I find him hugely overrated.

It's Saturday night, don't worry about it.

In two years when the Royals are in their window of competing

I want somebody other than Soria closing. No reason to even have a closer this year, or last year, or the year before.

Also, Karma is a fucking myth.

LaPorta elbows a man in the face, then later hits a walk off.

Nice use of the tilda.

Even if it was a copy/paste, nice work.

Just looked it up.

Apparently, it’s tilde (I never took Spanish). Just always assumed it Tilda Swinton was named after the grapheme.

I looked it up, also

This night is going downhill fast.

i'm conflicted on the hit at home.

i like hard plays at home, i appreciate collisions at the plate, but it did appear he lead with his elbow then his shoulder. mlb.com doesn’t show a close up or anything and i didn’t see the game in real time. is laporta a scumbag who deserves to be hit in the ankle or ribs? i think so, but i don’t know how i would feel if one of our players did this.

Do these effectively hide my thunder?

by splitty on Jul 31, 2011 2:03 AM EDT up reply actions

It wasn't great

Not terrible either. So not close tho I think LaPorta should have conceded the out.

I just realized

That someone I went to training with for work is a Treanor and was one of the biggest douche bags I’ve ever met. So bad that the connection has been suppressed in my memory until now.

I just watched a bunch of video clips

featuring Yamaico Navarro hitting and fielding. At the very least, he looks a bit more athletic than Mike Aviles. http://mlb.mlb.com/search/media.jsp?player_id=501605

Treanor holding onto the ball even with LaPorta putting his shoulder into the side of his head was damned impressive

Great tough play. I hope the concussion isn’t too bad. I don’t love Treanor as a talent, but I hope he’s not rewarded for that tough play with a 60-day DL stint a la Justin Morneau.

one run in an indians royals game hardly seems worth it

especially for a bazillion year old guy having his career year

The problem with closers

It’s they pitch a bunch of scoreless innings, then implode for a few runs. ALL OF THEM. So what is the difference between a closer and say… Luke hochevar? Lower era? Well they’re done once a certain number has scored so that artificially deflates their era. Even mariano’s. The save stat is dumb.

The save stat is dumb

And managers’ obsession over using their closer only in the save situation is dumb.

I wonder how many starts Pina will get over the next week.

I imagine at least one or two. Good call for the Royals not to rush Perez up.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the war room!

when Lonnie Chisenhall gets two huge walks vs you late

you will lose..

at what point does someone in management realize that Tim Collins is terrible v. lefties?

also loved Aaron Crow’s fastball-free outing.. not dumb strategy at all..

Well there's no way he could work on breaking pitches in side sessions or in the minors, I mean, there's just not enough time!

Let's comment on a big positive from tonight's game:

Another data point for the “Paulino is a real find” camp. Yes, we probably need to see him not only continue what he’s been doing the rest of this year, but perhaps also do it again next year to be sure it is real improvement – but for now, damn if it doesn’t LOOK like real improvement.

Hell, if he keeps this up, outside of the rookie performance by Hosmer, this might be the best story of the 2011 season when it’s all said and done. (I should probably mention the kiddy corp bullpen – but frankly, the successes of Crow, Holland, and Coleman would sorta pale in comparison to finding a #2 or #3 starter on the waiver wire)

If strikeouts are indeed fascist - then find me some starters that believe in fascism

Paulino is one of the few Moore acquisitions where I can say,

“This guy was acquired using the correct thought process, and has a legitimate chance to contribute to the Major League Team.”

Paulino had a mixed night

the first half was awesome, and it really seemed like the second half was a struggle (letting runners on early and having to get outs with a runner in scoring position).. i’m not sure it does much to dispel my perception that Paulino is significantly worse from the stretch. At least he didn’t give up any runs, so there’s that.

I'm liking this guy more and more with every start

I’m skeptical of the “ace potential” that some fans say they see in him, but he continues to make it look like he’s at least pretty good.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 31, 2011 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he has Royal's ace potential.

I don’t see a scenario where he’s not the best starter we have on opening day next season(well, maybe if we try Soria as a starter, or if his arm falls off in September). I don’t think he’s a true ace, but I think he could be a #2 or at least #3. When you consider the price paid, he was one of the steals of the year in MLB.

extra note on Navarro

one of the worse comparisons possible was made about his physique being a “less rotund Juan Uribe”… so yeah.. for all we know, this guy is either here for 3 years or gone in 3 months. Depends on how he handles things

Positive note from the game

The Indians offense was shut down for 16 straight innings by the worst SP staff in baseball. If they think getting a shell of Ubaldo Jimenez makes them better than Detroit, then they are kidding themselves. They were the only team in the central that I felt was positioned to be a powerhouse 2-5 years down the road, and they just gave that potential away. Now when the Royals start competing in a few years, the division title will be that much more attainable. The Indians are the AL version of the Pirates.

by YouDon'tPhaseMeGobble on Jul 31, 2011 7:52 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Except the Pirates are acting more reasonable

No trade could make them better than the Cards or the Brewers, so they make a minor upgrade at first and keep grinding. If they win, thats great, but I think they know they shouldn’t.

Couple of questions

1. Why are runners allowed to do anything possible to reach home plate? Say Melky gets picked off first, why is it wrong in that situation to lead with your shoulder into Laporta’s head? Next time Gordon is in a rundown, just run over the thirdbaseman.
2. Pena’s play at home. The replay from the 1st base dugout shows that he moved up the 1st baseline to receive the ball. Is my amatuer review of this play correct? Did Pena do the best he could? Was he in the correct position but the throw was a bit off and pulled him out of position?

by spamiam79 on Jul 31, 2011 9:31 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

1. The current rules and customs on this are stupid, archaic and should be changed. If a base runner can avoid hammering the catcher and still get to home plate, he should be required to do so. Instead, the rules allow and basebal custom requires that the base runner hit the catcher if he’s even partially blocking the base runner’s path to the plate (and quite frankly if he’s anywhere near the vicinity).

2. It looked to me like the ball was to the first base side so he had to step to his right to get the ball. But the ball got their so early that he had time to pretty easily get back between the base runner in the plate to apply the tag. But when he moved in front of the plate, he stayed up high, as if to wait to allow the base runner to run into him and apply the tag in the chest. I guess perhaps he was expecting to get hammered and was putting himself in position to take the hit. He wasn’t prepared for a slide, so he was late getting down low to apply the tag. So I don’t think the problem was his position in getting the ball, it was what he did afterwards.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

1. Baseball might be the sport that it is biggest on playing the game the right way, tradition, being part of the fraternity. Just seems odd to me that it is good sportsmanship to just run around in a rundown, but grit and playing the game the right way to put your shoulder into a catcher during a play at the plate.
2. I will have to rewatch the play on DVR (once I can get the TV off of Disney junior). I was thinking the runner got there before he had a chance to get his glove down. But I think you might be right.

by spamiam79 on Jul 31, 2011 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

technically, in MLB you can run over any fielder who is blocking a base

as long as they have the ball. that’s what frank or ryan were mentioning on one of the broadcasts a few weeks ago.

luckily the lower levels of baseball don’t quite allow such physical play. in high school you can’t leave your feet on a play at the plate……..we once had a kid get called out for jumping over/around a catcher on a play at the plate.

Just watching the game, wasn't able to post

I thought the big problem was letting Collins start off the 8th instead of bringing Crow in for a clean inning. I think that lost the game. And Soria insisting on throwing his bugs bunny curve that was nowhere near the strike zone tonight.

Stuck following the Royals since 1976.

by A. B. Aird on Jul 31, 2011 10:08 AM EDT reply actions

Well, he threw a handful of curves but no changeups. He and the Royals have clearly given up on his changeup (he hasn’t thrown one all year). But he needs the fastball to set up his breaking balls (whether slider, curve or both). So I’m fine with him throwing more curveballs, but the way to do that is not to suddenly throw only 10% fastballs.

On top of that..

How many appearances has he had this year?

Just like with Jack, Last night.. not his best stuff aside from the Getz fumbled DP attempt, Jack hasnt been on point nor has he had alot of chances to throw this year.
