Schaum's Edwin Carl Interview
What's interesting is it sounds like Carl's got a major league repertoire. Fastball 91-94 and can touch 95. Change-up and curveball that he can throw for strikes. He says it's all just coming together for him now.
I'd like to hear what a scout says about his stuff, but superficially, it seems he's the real deal. Now he just needs to earn his promotions quickly due to his age. Regardless, I'll be keeping an eye on this intriguing pitcher.

He's a health nut
If I took two years continually naming ideal meals for myself in order of preference I don’t think I’d ever get to poached fish on a salad with whole-grain anything on the side.

Growing up I had a late birthday so I was always the youngest player on the team.
Interesting point. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a bit about this and its a pretty underrated point that doesn’t get much attention in sports. With youth, 10 months can be a huge difference in terms of physical maturity.

I always think about Gladwell's point when looking at players birth dates
He said something like 2/3s of pro hockey players in Canada were born in January or February because they org youth leagues by calendar year.

sounds to me like they organize other activities by calendar year as well...

I have a kid who started school a year early
He’s going to be one of my best players and getting a lot of attention from colleges. I keep thinking to my self what if I had him for this year AND NEXT? We’d be so much better. His dad was a late bloomer as well… so 1 REALLY good year out of him, not 2…
It's weird how much better he is now than he was in college
Used strictly as a reliever both in college and in the minors
2010 Univ. of NM – 9.7 K/9, 4.5 BB/9
2010/11 MiLB totals – 17.9 K/9, 1.8 BB/9

I found his workout routine interesting
yoga, swimming, throwing with his eyes closed (is that the same as pitching with your hair on fire?). That seems somewhat non-traditional.

if he really does have those pitches
I would not be surprised to see the Royals try to put him in a starting role in Low A next year, with an eye toward quick promotion. They may think they have just struck gold, and if I were them, I would wait, work with him in instructs, then do the full conversion in the off season.
