Billy Butler: Double Play Royalty

CLEVELAND, OH - AUGUST 26: Billy Butler #16 of the Kansas City Royals is out at second as second baseman Cord Phelps #35 of the Cleveland Indians throws to first for the double play during the eighth inning at Progressive Field on August 26, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio. After grounding into a league leading 32 double plays last year, Billy is only 28th in the league with 14 GDP (11 behind league leading Adrian Gonzalez and Albert Pujols). Actually he behind fellow team mate Jeff Fracoeur who has 16 GDP. Billy is not close to having any "wheelz", but he has improved this GDP this season.

I looked at how many double plays happened per PA and batted ball (min 400 PA) when runners were on 1B with 1 or less outs. Here are the results with Billy's 2010 numbers for reference:

Name PA GDP GDP/PA GDP/Ball in Play
Butler 93 14 15.1% 19.4%
Francoeur 118 16 13.6% 16.7%
Hosmer 92 10 10.9% 14.3%
Gordon 86 8 9.3% 12.3%
Escobar 109 9 8.3% 9.7%
Cabrera 111 8 7.2% 8.2%
Getz 64 4 6.3% 7.3%

Butler – 2010 135 32 23.7% 27.1%

Even though Francoeur leads the team in GDP, Billy is still more likely to ground into a double play when given the opportunity.  The list seems to almost go slowest to fastest with Cabrera being a little out of place.
