Detroit's been one of the luckiest teams in the league, and KC the unluckiest. Actual standings: DET 73-61, CWS 67-65, CLE 66-65, MIN 56-78, KCR 56-79 Pythagorean standings: DET 67-67, CWS 66-66, CLE 64-67, KCR 62-73, MIN 52-82 That puts the Royals 5 1/2 games behind the Tigers, right? Still in the division hunt, right? So why are we playing so much worse than our pythag? Possible answers: 1) Ned is small-balling us out of big innings. The Röyals lead the league in sacrifice bunts with 49 and are second to the Rays in caught stealing, 53 to 51. One point: Most of the bunts are by Alcides and Getz. Alcides I understand. Why is Getz playing at all? 2) Our starting rotation has featured some historically bad pitchers, like Hiram, SOS, and Boom Boom. When these guys start you're going to lose games no matter how many runs you score. 3) Soria has blown several saves that we should have won. It's probably a combination of the three factors above, plus a few others I didn't think of. Good news: If Dayton gets us a couple of starters and our rookies turn out all right, we've got a chance at contending for the division next year.
