Royals Lose Late to Tigers
It's Friday night, the season is a lost cause. Don't worry about it.
- Two hits for Johnny Giavotella in his debut.
- Lots of singles up and down the lineup, and a nice rally in the 7th, but that was it.
- Another good start from Paulino. I'm not sure I'm fully a believer yet, but he's done well.

I think Ryan Mallett
has the highest ceiling, since he has the best arm. It’s just that some people think he might be another Ryan Leaf. I think it was moronic that he dropped as far as he did when less-talented guys like Gabbert went high in the first.
chiefs and nearly every other team shouldve jumped all over that in the 3rd
gabbert’s arm is crazzy too…and he’s more athletic

Huh?
How can you argue Cam Newton doesn’t have the highest ceiling? The guy was the best college QB in the history of college football last year and was the #1 pick for a reason.
He’s a bigger strong Vince Young with a much more accurate arm. The problem is he’s only done it for one year and all the off-field shit may torpedo his career (don’t think so though)
After Newton has a few years to acclimate to the NFL you will look back at this post and laugh at the notion that anyone has a higher ceiling than him. As a Falcon fan I hope he doesn’t pan out, but his potential is ridiculous; you can argue he has more potential than any QB in the history of the NFL if he is able to utilize his running skill set.
How many college QB’s lead his team to an undefeated record through the SEC and won the national championship with 50 total td’s, 7 interceptions, 3000 passing yards and 1500 rushing yards in one season?

Forgot about Newton,
though I don’t think his ceiling is as high as someone like Michael Vick’s was (sorry, Falcons guy). I do think the question should have been Mallett or Newton as the top qb. That said, however, I’d say Newton has a better shot at being JaMarcus Russell, who was also amazing in college in the tough SEC. Or Tim Tebow. Or Matt Jones.
Of course he does
Michael Vick was never an accurate QB..his completion % was always sub 60,% and he was NEVER accurate
The ironic part is it took his two years of being incarcerated before he learned to be a pocket passer

Vick was never a good QB!
Until last year his QB rating was about 75 for his career!
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/2549/michael-vick
He didn’t even come close fulfilling his potential because he never developed as a passer, until last year. Even if he is a great running QB, he also broke his leg after scrambling in a preseason game because of it. Newton is 40 pounds heavier and a half a foot taller than Vick and will be able to scramble and take a hit. BUT he’s a much better passer than Vick was even 6 years into his NFL career.
Its foolish to discount Cam Newton as a QB prospect when former NFL QB’s like Dilfer (say what you want but he did win a SB) rave about his ability. John Gruden said he was easily the best player in the country and an impeccable football player. Several other coaches said he was the best college QB ever to play a single season:
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/01/some_coaches_call_auburn_qb_ca.html
There is plenty of praise out there and its justified because the guy was phenomenal last year

Reports from Panthers camp say
Newton couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat (is anyone surprised?). Great college QB, but they are saying Jimmy Clausen is owning him in camp. Jimmy freaking Clausen! They signed Derek Anderson for Pete’s sake. I think Carolina blew it and set their team back 5 years. I like the Gabbert, Locker, and Ponder picks. Those guys won’t start right away, but they will be solid NFL qbs in the future.
I need to go take a Davies and wipe my Elarton. Excuse me.

College is way different than the pros.
“Most potential than any QB in the history of the nfl”
You are going way overboard. Jamarcus Russell had more potential.
Jamarcus Russell did have potential
and was a bust because of his work ethic.
Cam Newton has the most potential because he has an ability unmatched by any QB, pretty much ever. Andrew Luck looks like the best QB prospect ever ,and will probably be a better player than Newton, only because he was a greater probability of reaching his potential than Netwon, but you cannot deny that Newton has ridiculous potential.

I remember hearing all the buzz about his off-field issues and never really hearing anything specific beyond the occasional marijuana rumor. There’s smoke there (no pun intended) but I"m not convinced there’s fire.

Laid off pitches he couldn’t hit without flinching. Compact, quick stroke. Hit the ball hard each time up. Took a walk.
Gia looks a lot better than Moose at the plate right now.
As always with any rookie
the real test will be once MLB pitchers develop a book on him. But the early signs are encouraging. Without a doubt an immediate improvement on Getz. I swear I could see Getz watching his career flash before his eyes when they showed him getting ready to pinch run for Billy.

I guess that depends on what you mean “form an impression.” Sure seeing him tells me something. But I don’t think that impression from seeing him at bat a few times really tells me much. He laid off some bad pitches and hit some good pitches. That’s good. But it really doesn’t tell me a lot. I certainly can’t say from seeing him in one game that I think he’s a good bet to hit for average in the majors.

He said, based off this one game, it “looks like he will hit for average”. But this is why some people consider u overly negative. Had johnny went 0-4 with two strikeouts, and an anti-johnny member commented saying "I was less impressed with jhonny than I thought I would be ", there is no way u would’ve commented saying the opposite of what u said to kcdc. He said he was more impressed than he thought he would be, gave reasons why, and didn’t make any huge predictions based on the game….. No reason for a response belittling his observations

I didn’t exactly provide a counterargument. I responded with a bit of snark, and not about Gia. The snark was about kcdc1’s perpetual positivity. He sees the bright side in all things about the Royals. If Gia had 4 K’s in this game, kcdc1 would have pointed out how hard he hit a couple foul balls. Then later he concluded (based on what he saw in 4 PA’s) that Gia should hit for average in the majors. I pointed out that such a conclusion based on seeing so little of a player is unwarranted. No biggie.
Seriously, after one game, I’m sure EVERYONE is more impressed than they expected.
Really? It’s hard for a player to exceed or fall short of my expectations based on what they do in one game.
Acting like kcdc had made up his mind, just bc he expects good production out of gio, doesn’t make sense
It doesn’t take much to get kcdc1 to jump to a positive conclusion about any Royals player, GM or the team.

Ya know…I take the comment in the spirit in which it’s intended. I recognize that it’s foolish to let it ruin our evening or anything. But this does sort of go to a larger issue on which my feelings sort of differ from those of most of the participants here.
For me, baseball is very much about the individual evening in question: the Game In Front Of You. I’ve never really needed the prospect of the World Series trophy looming in the near future to invest myself fully in a baseball game. The professionals must, yes; I am not a professional. Baseball is recreation. It is immediate and visceral. Each game matters to me on the evening it occurs. I think it’s OK to let a loss like this sting, or to feel stupidly happy about a walk-off, without thinking overly much about the season context.

Now, that having been said...
…no, the Royals should not abandon their long-term strategy and make roster moves and strategic decisions exclusively in order to please us here and now. Again, the professionals should be thinking long-term. All I’m saying is: AS FANS, our investment in each game shouldn’t be slave to long-term considerations.

im with you...i do care each and every game...
but it’d be much tougher for me to do that without seeing what’s on the horizon. the royals have been much more fun for me the past year and a half b/c even if the royals put up a stinker, i could go through a couple box scores and see something really promising. Tonight, couldve been a crushing game…but then i look and see that our IF had a combined age of like 91 and all have a chance to be good/great players

My thoughts exactly
By the time the camera cuts away, that dude is still down there struggling with Polanco’s legs, proving to be a mild inconvenience, at best.
I read somewhere that somebody had Gio rated as Pedroia-light as a ceiling, and
Eckstein as a floor.
Really? I mean, there is a HUGE amount of space between those two!
Just goes to show you what Scott is saying – it’s way too early to tell, and probably still will be at the end of his 150-200 AB trial this season.
That being said, I must admit I have a funny feeling about this one. The whole short guy with a chip on his shoulder, the “he can’t play defense” opinions, hell, even the fact that he played middle linebacker in high school, all leave me with the irrational thought that he might somehow end up being a MUCH better player than it appears from the projections. God knows the Royals are due to catch lightning in a bottle sometime soon!
If strikeouts are indeed fascist - then find me some starters that believe in fascism
My expectations for an everyday second baseman have been rather low the last few years.

Better than the projections
I’ve thought for awhile that he would exceed projections. For some reason, people have overstated his supposed “negatives” all year. The defensive reports have mostly come from people who haven’t even seen him play, are just repeating internet babble (people said the same about Hos and Moose defense, which has been at least adequate). Thanks mostly to the way we communicate today (internet, message boards, social media), sweeping and absolute generalizations are made that just get repeated into becoming accepted truth.
I’ll always take someone’s first-hand opinion of a player into consideration, with some salt. But these guys that just repeat what they heard someone else say drives me nuts. I’ve heard people state something about a Royals minor-leaguer as fact because “Greg Schaum said it.” Greg is entitled to his opinion- but I’d rather trust my own once I’ve had the chance to form it! Greg doesn’t automatically know ANYTHING about baseball, just because he runs a website. A good look at his website tells you that he’s just another fan.
