Jeff Francis's next start Thursday will be his last of the season. Ned Yost said, "He’s got 180 innings under his belt, and (going further) starts to border on abuse for me." Of course, this comment comes with Francis's return from major shoulder surgery in mind, but it's also worth pointing out that Luke Hochevar, who also struggled with injury last year (though not to the extent that Francis did) pitched his 196th inning today. A few thoughts: I wonder if Hochevar will finish out the season. I think it was prudent for Yost to remove him after 88 pitches in six innings today, with the Royals several runs ahead. Also, how many of us expected Francis to make it through the season healthy? I, admittedly, did not. Who replaces him? It'll be O'Sullivan, Mendoza, or Mazzaro - Mendoza having little to no big league upside, and the other two of whom had unspectacular years in Omaha. My vote would be to take another look at Mazzaro.
