Royals Humiliate White Sox for 7th Straight Victory
Make it seven. The Royals got a serviceable start from Everett Teaford and another huge offensive night en route to another victory. I almost felt like a Red Sox or Yankees fan tonight: long innings, an endless string of hits, bottom of the order guys contributing with extra base knocks... wow.
- The Royals had an absurd eighteen hits on the evening. As three players had three-hit games (Melky, Moose, Perez) and three more managed two-hit games (Gordon, Butler, and Escobar).
- Moose's power surge continues, as he just got the ball over the wall for his fourth homer.
- Francoeur sent the game into laugher territory and sent his fans into ecstasies with a three run homer in the eighth.
- In a somewhat pointless start, Getz tripled.
- I said above Teaford's start was serviceable, but perhaps that is unkind. He allowed just four hits and walk, against four strikeouts in six innings. I suppose there is just a small part of me that thinks I could toss five decent innings against this sleepwalking Sox squad.

this is what annoys me to no end about this move:
is the ‘v’ actually a ‘7’? Because if that’s the case, then the movie sucks.

What *is* Scott excited about? Anything?
I can’t honestly answer that question.
Mike Kingery and Phil Hiatt’s major league starts excited the hell out of me. Now I try to be a bit more circumspect.

That's weird...
I found a Phil Hiatt baseball card in the parking lot of the grocery store tonight. I had never heard of the guy. I was surprised to find out he played for the Royals back in the 90’s.

That's no bullshit.
Mike Kingery went nutty cakes when he got called up. Think Aviles times 5.
Ouch
A lifetime of seeing guys hit well for a while when they are called up and then doing nothing has given me some perspective. I remember the major league starts of Mike Kingery, Phil Hiatt and many others. I want to believe, but for a non-top prospect who all of the scouting reports said he’s got great defensive skills but meh hitting skills, I’ll believe he’s a pretty good MLB hitter when he shows for at least a full season.

Not really cutting
But yeah in my first couple of years here, I semi-frequented game threads and found them to be unpalatable. Emotional overreactions by fans are kind of a pet peeve of mine and that’s what game threads are all about. So I’ve avoided them completely for the past couple of years.

by philofthenorth on Sep 17, 2011 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions
He's really young, but
the scouting report on him doesn’t really treat him like an offensive animal, or even a competent hitter. The Royals also pushed him quick. It could all be a mirage, but at his age, there really is room to develop new skills (like a hit tool). From accounts a couple of years ago, he was good catcher that was super raw at the plate. If something clicked for him this year, then he could have shattered the ceiling for his projections.
But alas, we will not know because the Royals will not reveal that type of information.
I will be on record as being excited in that I'm used to seeing Jason Kendall stink up the position
and at least having upside is exciting by comparison, though I don’t expect him to hit anywhere close to .300 in the future.

But as I looked through the schedule I realized something.
We have a 7-game winning streak.
Our longest losing streak was 6.
When the fuck was the last time we ended the season with our longest winning streak being longer than the longest losing streak?

by Scott McKinney on Sep 18, 2011 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Do you get “wound up” about every rookie who has a hot start? Even if all the scouts say he’s not much of a hitter? Still seems like the real deal to you and really winds you up? I guess it doesn’t take much data for you to believe a guy is “for real.” How long have you been following baseball? Really.
Yes, I wish the Royals still had Aviles. Ever looked at his stats? Do you understand that stats beyond the current year are meaningful too? I’ve said many times, that even though I wish the Royals had Aviles, I’d have Gia be the starting 2B for the remainder of the season and to start 2012. Give him and his upside a chance. I’d just like to have a legit backup plan. Getz and Navarro aren’t that. Aviles is. Again, check the stats. And look beyond pickoffs.
You may know me as NYRoyal.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 18, 2011 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions
No, I don’t get wound up over every rookie that gets off to a hot start. And I don’t claim to be right on every opinion I’ve ever had. To answer your question, I’ve been following baseball for about 30 years. My guess is, just as closely as you have.
I actually look at things very realistically and with a level head. I have disagreed with most moves they’ve made in the last 15 years. I do happen to agree with most of the organizations major decisions this season.
by Rufus R. Jones on Sep 19, 2011 2:51 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I am a big believer in a lot of the statistical analysis that we have at our disposal today. I also happen to believe a lot of it is useless, over thought-out bullshit. And when a move or a player does pan out, whether I agreed with it at the time or not, as a fan, I’m still glad it worked out. My ego and sense of self-worth is fine with being wrong occasionally. So I guess if that makes me a naive, optimistic embecile, then that’s me.
by Rufus R. Jones on Sep 19, 2011 2:59 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I'm often wrong
And perhaps Sal Perez was called up at exactly the right time. I hope he was. I think one place where you and I differ is that you think Perez has already “panned out.” I, on the other hand think that this amount of data doesn’t prove anything (just has the long stretch of bad hitting for Moose didn’t prove that he’s a bust).
I apologize for the tone of my post, but it was in reaction to what I took to be a condescending statement that if I thought the Royals should have kept Aviles and if I wasn’t excited about Perez, then I’m off my rocker. In reality, my feelings about both of those players are based in sound analysis. Now my analysis may be off and my conclusions may be wrong, but it is reasoned, thoughtful analysis, not the wild ravings of a loon. If someone disagrees with or doesn’t understand my analysis, that’s cool. But to write it off as goofy nonsense rubbed me the wrong way.
You may know me as NYRoyal.
