A very quick post (also, my first) comparing Billy Butler to Yaz

I was quite surprised to see how Billy Butler's first 5 years can be compared to Carl Yastrzemski.  Lets dig right in.

We will start with year 1.  Billy had 360 plate appearances compared to Yaz's 643.  Obviously the counting stats would be hard to compare, so lets talk about BA, OBP, SLG, OPS and OPS+.  Billy was better in every category in their respective first years.

Go ahead and check out those GDP's too.  That will also be a common theme in this post.
We are going to move on to years 2 and 3 now.  In those years Yaz looks like the better player, he led every category except for slugging in year 3.  You can definitely see Billy taking a step back in year 2 while Carl seems to have figured it out and leaped forward.
Billy puts up a great year 3 and so does Yaz.  Carl seems to still have the edge but Butler closed the gap a bit.

Years 4 and 5 are interesting to me because I believe they both are settling into their careers at this point.  Year 4 goes to Billy and year 5 is clearly all Carl's.  I will give my closing argument after the last graphs.

I think we definitely have some similarities to be at least reasonably excited about.
Lets go ahead and take a quick glance at the counting stats.  With 400 fewer plate appearances through his first 5 seasons Butler has only 5 fewer home runs, 5 fewer doubles, 9 fewer RBI's, and most importantly, 5 fewer GDP's.

Take a look at Carl Yastrzemski's final career numbers below and lets hope that Billy can get somewhere close to this at the end of his career.  And on top of that, hope he is still a Royal when that time comes.
