Royals Battle for Grass Creek Again
As you probably know, Royals-Mariners is a HUGE rivarly. But again, if you live anywhere east of Chicago and south of the Yukon, you already knew that. We battle the Mariners for Wyoming each summer, and really, no one wins. If you are new to the site, here's a little background.
If you care about actual baseball Lookout Landing has a great series preview up.
- With Familiar Stars Absent, Battle for Grass Creek Isn't the Same - Royals Review (I actually won an SB Nation writing award for this one.)
- To Hate Like This is to be Willie Bloomquist Forever - Royals Review
- The Battle for Grass Creek, Wyoming Begins - Royals Review
- Interview with a Grass Creek HS Graduate
- my failed attempt to scout the Chukars and... - Royals Review
Given that the Royals are 13-9 against the Mariners since the 2009 season began, I think it is safe to say all but far northeastern Wyoming is diehard Royals fans now. Teal is bleeding out of the Equality State faster than a 1994 Hornets Starter Jacket on machine wash. We need to update our maps!

Is it 1 WAR?
Because I’ve been told that those don’t exist.

If, in the distant future, I ever have a child who plans to get married
and said wedding is going to coincide with Royals-Mariners, they’re just going to have to reschedule.
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the war room!
Shit!
I gotta run home and get my Larry Johnson jacket ot of the wash!
I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

The Royals Mariners series over the years has become my favorite series match up.
Love the Battle for Grass Creek
Do these effectively hide my thunder?
I just relocated to southwest Washington for work
I now live about a two-hour drive south of Seattle. If you need an underground agent at the scene in 2012, I’m your man. I’ve got my Soria and Gordon jerseys all unpacked and ready to go. Grass Creek must remain Royals territory!
Great. We need a Royals sleeper cell started. I assume SW Washington is Portlandia,
but the movement can work its way northward faster than Jarrod Dyson… well, maybe not.

the insurrection will begin in Vader, Washington
(or so says Google maps if you round up 1 hour 57 minutes to 2 hours).
Hmmm...Vader is about a 10-15 minute drive from where I live
I should go on a scouting expedition soon to determine its potential for housing a Royals sleeper cell started so deep in enemy territory.
But I do know that there is a Taco Bell about a three-minute drive from my place, though, for what it’s worth.
(And yes, SW Washington is certainly closer to PDX, but I can already tell that it is absolutely, without a doubt, Mariners country. A few of my parishioners are diehard M’s fans, and the local Target has an entire aisle of M’s gear. I had to avert my eyes.)
The Old Joke
Why doesn’t Portland have a MLB team? Because then Seattle would want one too.

Any word on whether the violence has ever escalated to kidnapping?
If not, can we start be grabbing Pineda?

Battle of moveable object vs resistible force
Second worst pitching staff vs worst batting.
How many singles will Sgt. Suzuki slap (raising his team leading .271 AVG?
Will Lt. Hoch explode in the 4th?
The gauntlet has been thrown, who will swing at more balls in the dirty, Olivo or Frenchy?

I See SEA
On ROOT a lot, and will listen to their games when I’m in the yard sometimes. In the spirit of my recent Fapsnost about the 1967 Red Sox, SEA is in the throes of a full on youth movement. The old, putrid team that started the season is gone, replaced by a bad but improving group of youngsters. The team I most often see now is:
C- Olivo (32)/Bard (33)- Olivo has one more guaranteed year, and his offense is sagging badly. Maybe they have a surprise somewhere in MiLB.
1B- Justin Smoak (24)- He’s back from injury, but Carp was tearing it up in his absence. He’s struggling at the plate.
2B- Dustin Ackley (23)- Their best offensive weapon, seems at least adequate in the field. I wish we had him.
3B- Kyle Seager (23)- His offense is picking up, looks like he can stick at 3B.
SS- Brendan Ryan(29)- He is who we thought he is. Looks like only Jack Wilson for a backup.
LF- Trayvonn Robinson(23)- Acquired from the Dodgers, has impressed in both halves of the inning. Very SSS.
CF- Franklin Gutierrez(28)- Great D as always, he must be coming on with the bat, as he was sub .200 for much of the season.
RT- Ichiro(37)- Still a gret defender, but having his worst season ever at the plate. A 633 OPS at COF is hideous, really.
DH- Mike Carp(25)- He looked like the real deal at 1B in Smoak’s absence, DHing for now. Smoak better pick it up or he may lose his job. Carp can play LF, too.
The rotation is very good, even after the Fister and Bedard trades. The bullpen, with the notable exception of Cortes, has been solid. Brandon League as a closer has been a real find.
This is a much different team from the one we played earlier in the season. It should be interesting.

Having been born in Wyoming...
I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that I have never met and/or known a fellow from Wyoming who owed his allegiance to the Mariners.

I am my only family born in Wyoming
My parents moved there, I was born, then we moved back… They only have one group of friends still, I don’t think any of them can tell you anything about baseball.

It isn't a what, but rather a where.
Some say it is a mythical place on the Wyoming plains, others see it as a metaphor depicting Man’s inhumanity toward Man, But I have seen it. I have seen it! Proof is in my picture to the right. And let me tell you, friend, it is ours tonight.

all will be revealed
It is a place that I have seen weathered, nay, Arthruian-esque, signs point towards
during my many trips across I-80. But I am among the unfortunate masses who have yet to set foot upon this far, legendary outpost of Royals fandom.
