From Frescoe's Facebook
David Glass told the AP that he expects Dayton Moore to being long term contract discussions this year with Moose and Hosmer. What young guys do they HAVE to lock up quickest?

This type of thing seems much more likely with guys who didnt get a huge signing bonus to me.
And who don’t have Boras as their agent. Salvador Perez was my example of someone who would seem to be a candidate.

Good point on players without huge signing bonuses
There is usually little incentive to sign catchers long-term, however, as they are generally the lowest paid position — the 5th highest catcher salary in MLB history (by average annual value) is Ramon Hernandez at $6.8 million. Outside of the rare Joe Mauer situation, teams are fine going to year to year with catchers.
I'd lock up that Gordon kid.
Someone should look into that.

I would love if they locked up Hosmer.
Moose makes more sense than Perez, imo. Catcher is a pretty volatile position, so I’d wait a few years to see if he does well.

moose doesnt need the long term security nearly as badly as perez presumably does...
moose has already made 4 and a half million dollars playing baseball…if he’s not set for life, he’s pretty damn close.

I can see extending Hosmer now
Not so sure about Moose….I’m not so sure his ceiling is so high that it is risky to wait a bit on him. Hosmer living up to his potential would make him really expensive.
Killing time until time kills me
Hosmer's gonna be gone in 6 years
Unless he gives the Royals a discount. Or unless the Royals win a World Series, acquire the BFIB title, and suddenly have $100 million for the payroll.
its about a year too late for that....
and longoria didnt have boras as his agent. as much as he’ll listen to what his player wants, i have no doubt that his powers of persuasion could talk hosmer out of that kinda deal real quick

Yeah, I'd wait a little on Duffy.
I’m not sure if DM thinks that we need to lock up #2 or #3 starters. I mean, if we get an ace out of our system, then maybe.

Totally agree with trying to grab at least Duffy's arb years.
It makes sense, especially if they can get the pitch counts and walks down. He’s gonna strike a ton of fools out.

Duffy may never be a 5+ WAR pitcher
But if he can consistently put away 3.5-4 WAR seasons then he’s definitely worth keeping around. I don’t think he was given a big signing bonus either, so if the guy can do well, he might bite on an extension like Matt Moore did.
They need to lock up Hosmer
Gordon is getting discussed already so you guys can quit freaking out about that. It’s just not in the media. Not sure what they will do.
Hosmer needs to be locked up for the next 6 years… what would be a good contract? 1st year $500K, 2nd year $1.5M, 3rd year $5M, 4th year $10M, 5th year $10M, 6th year $10M making it 6/$37M? Needs more?
Probably a bit more
Over $40 mill and probably a club option for a ton of money at the end.

I think we all know they're talking with Gordon.
It actually has been in the media… just not lately. I think the comments are just snark (at least I know mine were).
I’ll be surprised if Hosmer signs away a year of free agency.
I say just Hosmer and Gordon for now
Moose’s OBA numbers scare me enough into thinking he’ll just be a league average 3B at best with some good pop.
None of the pitchers has done enough to warrant being locked up.
If Alcides is amenable to a really cheap deal I’d at least consider locking him up, but its not necessary.

One thing I've never criticized Moore for is extending young players
He’s done a good job locking up Soria, Greinke and Butler, including one or more FA years. I think he does the best he can, but it takes two to tango. If Hosmer never signs a long-term contract extension with the Royals (including at least one FA year), I hope no one criticizes Moore for it. I’m sure Moore would like to lock him up, but Hosmer is a Boras client, and Boras’s clients very rarely sign such deals. A GM can’t make a young player sign a long-term contract extension. All he can do is offer and encourage.

well said
Evan Longoria and Matt Moore were special cases, not the norm.
