It's Our Time
You tell ’em, Mikey…
http://movieclips.com/i5BJH-the-goonies-movie-its-our-time-down-here/
Quick and dirty casting for the Royals version of “The Goonies”:
Mikey – Johnny G
Brand – Francoeur
Data – Chen (naturally)
Chunk – Butler (even more naturally)
Mouth – Probably Hosmer
Andy – Adcock? (he’s the only ginger currently on the squad)
Stef – Getz?
Sloth – Perez?
Jake – Dayton
Francis – Dan Glass
Mama Fratelli – David Glass (the resemblance is striking)

Royals Got To!
do what’s right for them….which is Win…and us fans will be there to support them…Cause it’s “OUR TIME”…..Go Royals
Those characters
Mikey..Brand..Data..Chunk..Mouth..Andy and etc….all describe you at best! Boy “Sweeptheleg” your so right about yourself especially being “Sloth and Chunk” and the list goes on! Jealous people like you, go no where eh!
Conclusion: Grantland articles are generally thousands of words too long.

this is such a weird complaint
It’s not just you, plenty of people have it.
Maybe I would understand it better if it were about the “wordiness” – would you like them to be more concise in their writing style? Or do you just want less information from Keri and Rany, b/c that’s what “too long” sounds like to me.

Here's my complaint:
Why is it called “Grantland?” Am I missing something obvious? How about “Landgrant” or “Baroncattle” or “Roadrail?”
I would link to the Wikipedia page, but cannot today for obvious reasons:

For an even more hipster, yet strangely less pretentious take on all things sporting
I recommend theclassical.org
Fuck Grantland, Simmons, Klosterman, and most of the rest of em.

While Simmons is not the consistently fun read he used to be,
to his credit he was strongly against the “Grantland” name for the site, but apparently was vetoed by the ESPN execs.
It didn’t make sense then, and it doesn’t make sense now. It would be sort of like starting a movie review blog 10 years from now and calling it “Ebert”.

Kinda like how kansasjohn pointed out that 2/3rds of the article is about other teams
So, instead of the “wordiness”, it’s more the “ideas-ness” of it. They throw out a lot of possible interpretations, possibilities, tangents and other ideas on their main subject. They’re not “bad” ideas, but they’re probably not the "best " ideas either. So, they offer up a lot of ideas at the expense of losing anything resembling brevity. They’re not wrong to do so, they just take a long time to make their point. And often, their point isn’t groundbreaking, so it feels exhausting and, sometimes unrewarding, to spend 20 minutes (maybe not 20 minutes for that article, but others) to find out something you already knew.
Grantland is like travelling by train from New York to Chicago. The journey is a lot more interesting than a plane-ride, but it’s really fucking long.
That said, they cover interesting subjects and their writing is good.
In a broader sense,
It is also the instant gratification of our society. If you read an article on the internet, you basically want every meaningful point shoved into the first three paragraphs. Then, if you find the points interesting, you stick around to read the stats that led the writer to that point. Grantland has a grandiose way of getting to its point, and I think that turns a lot of people off.
What?
After the bolded words, you lost me.

i might be the complete opposite of everyone else...but i love the lengthiness of the grantland articles...
thats one of my issues with fangraphs is the lacking length of the articles

I think you are indeed the minority.
I usually don’t have time to read super long articles.

Well, I agree in that if a lot of the largesse is "pointless", the they're in need of some
editors/editing. Which is to say, if the “too long” means “too long for the amount of content presented”, then I’m on board. Some writers I trust and am OK with some rambling, like Keri, Rany, and Barnwell, even Mandel at SI, but if it get’s too long and full of fluff, it doesn’t really chap my hide – I just skim it.

looks like largesse doesn't mean what I think it means
maybe in a poetic sense.
Let’s try “long-y-ness”.

his articles always bubble over
with a “aww shucks” and “gee whiz” way of looking at things. at least that’s the way i read them when i still looked at his stuff.
He has his moments
Generally, I give him the benefit of the doubt. The nice thing is that around here if something he writes is particularly noteworthy, someone will give it a shout out and I (we) know we should go give it a look.

People tend to think that length = quality
Which is not true. Length = length, and quality = quality. What I like about Rany is that he is very thorough, and though his writings are long, they are quality.
This article wasn’t actually good. He threw out a bunch of different possibilities but did not extrapolate from their successes/failures what the Royals should actually do. Like a big introduction whose conclusion was a few sentences long.
I think this describes the vast majority of Grantland columns.
Like a big introduction whose conclusion was a few sentences long.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
I agree it was particularly wandering and didn't seem to have much of a point
other than “here are some examples of small market teams that found some success”. But I guess my issue was that the “too long” complaint wasn’t specific enough – length wasn’t the problem, it was more about not being particularly interesting or meaningful content. That said, I’m still glad I read it.

They all need a course in concise writing. And then another course in the advantages of concise writing, like less time writing and more readers.

Oh, I'm sure they have tons of readers.
But I would guess many people open up an article and read a little bit, then scroll down to see how long it is, then make a decision about whether to read the whole thing.
Also, they already had a lot of readers so that when all these writers came under one roof, they brought other audiences (with definite overlap).

I liked the optimism here
“And if six months from now they’re in the race and James Shields is on the table … well, never say never.”
I would be thrilled if they were in the race six months from now. Everything would have to break right for that to happen, including Yuni’s arm. Nothing serious, just a little fracture that keeps him out for the rest of the year.

I recently wrote a fanpost in which I said the same thing
(but no one apparently read it). A trade for a pitcher would still be a possibility, and the Royals need not wait till next year if they think they can go for it.
Don't be sad.
I don’t really read anyone’s fanposts. Well, except posts by Jeff and Scott because they’re packed with information. I dislike fanposts that only contain opinions.

Check out the contemporaneous breakdown of the Sabathia trade by Hardball Times
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/evaluating-the-cc-sabathia-trade/
Interesting points: the Brewers were on pace to win 90 games at the time, but their pythagorean projection was 87. In either case they were in the 86-93 win wheelhouse where a major acquisition would provide the most value, according to a study I linked to in a Fanshot recently. In addition, HBT calculated the real dollars and surplus value for both sides and concluded the Brewers did not overpay for Sabathia, though the draft picks expected from Sabathia as a Type A FA helped there.
The example is instructive if the Royals would find themselves unexpectedly a real contender in midseason. There may be more rental options in that event, but none I would expect to be the horse that Sabathia was that year.
Fwiw
I read it. I basically read almost everything on this site unless I fall a day or two behind. I read the good ones and the bad ones. I even read the squabbles that McKinney and Co get into.

Hawk, what's the point of a message board
unless people post opinions? Some are goofier than others, admittedly, but if people stop doing that this site dries up.

I didn't say people shouldn't or couldn't do it.
I just said I dislike fanposts that contain opinions only, unless it’s an expert opinion. Still, comments are the main vehicles for opinions on here, which I read plenty of.
