The two sides [Gordon and the Royals ] aren't particularly close but talks remain cordial and both sides want to get something done, i.e., no change.

From Dutton's twitter. I guess cordial is better than hostile.

Maybe it's my fatalism -- my belief that because my faith in Gordon was rewarded in 2011 that we're due to be punished in 2012 and beyond

… but a non-rational part of me thinks that things ends badly for Gordon in KC either way, and in a way that could involve no “fault” by either Gordon or the team.

Either Gordon gets extended, then “only” puts up about 4 WAR a year for a few year and the fans turn on him for not “earning” his money by repeating 2011

or he signs a very reasonable extension, plays well for one or two years, but then gets hurt and Sweeney’d

or he and the team don’t come to an agreement, he plays well for his last two years in KC, leaves as a free agent, and get ripped as “greedy and ungrateful” by the fan base.

I'm a lot more worried

About the large amount of money and/or prospects the Royals will give up for a pitcher at some point. Pitcher injuries are like dying. In the words of John Cusack in Grosse Pointe Blank, “Nobody chooses when.”

King Felix Would

Tear a rotator cuff adjusting his crown if we gutted the farm for him. Guaranteed.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

In terms of fan perception I think context is crucial...

It’s not impossible that he’ll only be the third best offensive player on this team by 2013, and if the Royals don’t make the playoffs and he’s .275/.350/.450 or whatever and he’s the highest paid player on the team, I’m sure he won’t be a fan favorite. Mostly because fans don’t account for positional adjustments or defensive value because they’re abstract and quantifying them is incredibly difficult.

I myself think that last year was a preview and that his power will increase and he’ll continue to be an MVP-level performer. His pedigree is flawless and his tools are too. He was a better prospect than any player in the organization. If he continues to bat lead off and hits nearly 30 hr’s fans will latch on to that, i think. He’ll hit like seven HRs to lead off games and it’ll become a thing. This ends well.

This Is One

Possible future, and I think it is likely. I could see 2 or 3 more similar seasons with one monster peak, then a gradual decline. I’ve always believed in Gordon.

he'd be a fan favorite if they spent the first two months of this season to pump his ASG voting

and get him into the starting lineup. They have the chance to do this and are sitting on it…

I think that and him performing well this year (at the ASG) would go a long ways. And we can get back to masturbating over 4.3WAR seasons.

Nick Swisher and Johnny Giavatella deserve treats in the Kaufmann parking lot.

I'm fine with this contract taking some time to get done.

He’s still arb-eligible next year. I’d almost rather see them get it done during the season while he’s playing well (again, even if not nearly his production this year) than now anyway.
